technically if I was trolling, a troll wins if he evicts a response from the person. I wasn't trying to troll, I was just having a bit of fun.

I tend to agree - but that's only my personal opinion of course. If they already have them then there isn't much one can do about it if that is what the person wants.

the ones who actually followed it properly.. as was said.. the "faux" ones were probably the majority.. and upon reading the real meaning of it quickly faded into obscurity.

That's certainly a fair assessment. Are they a majority there, by chance?
also this was taken from wikipedia from the definition of "beatnik":
"The Beat Generation, that was a vision that we had, John Clellon Holmes and I, and Allen Ginsberg in an even wilder way, in the late Forties, of a generation of crazy, illuminated hipsters suddenly rising and roaming America, serious, bumming and hitchhiking everywhere, ragged, beatific, beautiful in an ugly graceful new way"
But really I would say if anyone is trying to be whatever-niche, they're actually faux whatever-niche, if that makes sense. Like you have your people who actually start a movement in the first place, who have legitimate goals. And then you have people who come later and just want to be seen as those earlier people without actually sharing their vision.
A good example of that would be faux-hippies, who dress the part but don't share the whole peace and love aspect that was so crucial to that identity.
I think that could fairly be said for everyone - that the majority of people of a "style" you see are actually "faux" people, and a very small majority actually understand and properly follow the movement.
And yeah, toronto is almost entirely "hipster" now.

But please don't get the impression that anyone "not mainstream" is like that. Because I can assure you they're not. Sorry if you've run into some sucky individuals. Please don't let that experience tarnish your view of everyone who isn't mainstream though.
I can't stand to be around them as a result to be honest. I know you think you are taking the moral high ground here, but sometimes people just suck.

Although it's possible you may have run into a wannabe of some variety. Those exist in every subculture.
They claim that everything is mainstream, and that they are unique, yet they buy their "unique" look from mainstream stores and have turned into clones, but still go around looking down on others for listening to mainstream music and doing mainstream things.
yes Neonspider, I am sure. They are literally EVERYWHERE here.. its impossible to not interact with them in some way shape or form.. and they are also rampant in the gay community, which has forced me to interact with much more of them than I would have liked to.

You're basically the same as those people who get all bent out of shape because oh no someone dares be different from they are. Well the problem would be with the person getting bent out of shape in that case, and not with whoever is being different. And I think the sooner you realize this the sooner you can stop being like that. There's a term for this behavior. That term is bigot. You're being a bigot.
Now I don't think you're a bad person, but you really should stop that. Especially for someone who likely suffers bigotry from others because you're gay, you really shouldn't be dishing it out. Respect and tolerance and all that, man. If you want people to respect your lifestyle you really should respect the lifestyles of others.
we all have the right to have a beef about something. You are correct however. They have a right to be as tacky and as douchey as possible - I just wish a new `lifestyle`would come along in the mainstream one - because this hispter lifestyle full of holier than thou attitusdes and general douchedom is getting tiring.

nothing could be closer to the truth.. I just don't understand how they became SO mainstream - did so many people simply wish to not conform so much that they ended up achieving the complete opposite - creating a generation of elitist douchebag assholes?
..this has to end. This is but one image of way too many of what they are predicting for fall/spring 2014/2015 for hipster fashion.. which has now invalidated itself for being mainstream..
