Click mouse to shoot? Posted June 16th, 2007 in Game Development

I have this code for my ship to shoot:
if (Key.isDown(Key.CONTROL))

I did it like this because it's the only way I know how (pressing a button I mean)
I want to change it so all the things I have after this will be triggered by a left mouse click instead of pressing ctrl. What would I put? I think it's something like mouseDown or mousePress? I tried using those but it doesn't work.

Meh, they're OK I guess. Their sound never quite appealed that much to me. Have you ever listened to Reel Big Fish or Streetlight Manifesto? Somewhat similar sound, two bands I love.

No.
Because she's dead.

Only joke I can think of (in complete) right now. My history teacher told us this in 9th grade.

A spanish general and his army of thousands of soldiers are surrounding the Alamo.
"Come out and face us, you cowards!" Shouts the general
A lone voice from inside the building replies "Never! You come get me, I'll kill your entire army all by myself."
The general laughs at this remark and sends 10 of his troops down to take care of the soldier.
They march down to the building and bullets begin to be fired. A few minutes later, after the smoke has cleared, the general sees all 10 of his troops sprawled out on the ground, dead. Feeling humilated, he sends 100 more troops down to take care of the matter. Minutes later, the smoke clears and again all of the spanish troops lie dead on the ground.
Furious, the general sends 500 troops to the Alamo to kill the nuisance. Again they all die.
The general continues to send more and more troops down to kill the man, and they continue to be shot. Eventually only the general remains. Staring down at the building and thousands of bodies he tries to understand what had happened and notices one of the bodies is moving. The lone survivor slowly crawls his way to the general.
"What happened down there?!" The general shouts
"He lied, " replies the dying soldier, "there are two of them."

Bands like that are often relegated to obscurity, which is sad.

Well put.
I'm tired of seeing the same band with the same songs, just with different names.
I can't stand most of today's "mainstream, popular" bands

It's not gone, it's just shit today.
OLD rock, the good stuff n whatnot, that's gone.
If the question was about one of today's "rock" bands I'm sure everyone in the class would recognize the names. I'm with you though, I love classic rock and the good OLD stuff but I can't stand most of todays bands. It's just not the same, who knows if it will ever be again.

Response to: If Newgrounds Had A Tv Commercial Posted June 15th, 2007 in General

I say, for the sake of marketing of course, we just have two chicks going at it for 30 seconds, and at the end the screen just fades to black and "newgrounds.com" is displayed
The End.

Don't judge me, sex sells and you know it. It'll be like that one shoe commercial I saw a month ago and never knew what it was about. Random half naked chicks all over the screen for half a minute. Never once saw a shoe, yet that's what they were selling.

Response to: Score not working Posted June 13th, 2007 in Game Development

Forgot to mention, when the game starts I have this code:

_global.playerScore = "0";
_root.scorebox.text = "Chickens: "+_global.playerScore;

If that changes anything...

Response to: Score not working Posted June 13th, 2007 in Game Development

I'm pretty sure that's the exact code I posted..Did you change anything?
I tested it just to see and I'm still getting the same problem.

The score starts off at 0
You add one item and it's 01
you add another and it's 011
you add a third and it's 0111

Score not working Posted June 13th, 2007 in Game Development

Ok so here's what's going on. I have an item that you drag into a bag and when you do so it adds one to your score. Here's the code for the item(I'm pretty much a n00b at AS ):

on(release) {
this.stopDrag();
if(_root.bag.hitTest(this._x, this._y, true)) {
this.gotoAndStop("invis");
_global.playerScore = _global.playerScore + 1;
_root.scorebox.text = "Chickens: "+_global.playerScore;
}
else if(_root.bag.hitTest(this._x, this._y, false)) {
this.gotoAndPlay(1);
}
}

So basically when the item "goes into" the bag the global score variable is updated to whatever it currently is, plus one and the value in the dynamic text box is updated to display the global variable which has just been changed. Again, I'm pretty new to AS so I realize I could be way off with this code.

When I run the game and drag the items into the bag, rather than add one to the score it adds the number 1. So, after adding three items my score is 0111, instead of 3.

I'm not sure exactly what I need to fix so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Can we just turn the mean off here?

Your swf actually helped, THANK YOU, that's all you needed to do.

And yes, I searched AS Main but it didn't help that I didn't know what I was looking for. I read some things that I thought would help and tried to apply what I already knew but obviously came up with nothing. I'm trying to learn just like you have, I'm using all the resources I've found online but you can't possibly tell me that you knew exactly what you were looking for and where to look when you were in my position, or that you went through and read AS Main completely just to find what you were looking for. Sometimes yes, it IS nice to have things at your convenience but no one can expect that all the time, and I certainly don't. There's a lot of people that we can learn from here on NG but we'll get nowhere because people always have to be jerks about it. Can't we once just happily accept to help someone, or guide them in the right direction to help themselves? I never expected someone to do everything for me. That takes the fun out of it. All I wanted was a little help, ANY kind of help. I was offered code. I graciously accepted it. I didn't completely understand it, being at the level that I am so I asked some questions, to see if things could work the way I wanted them. Not once did I say "Give me the code that does this." People need to stop assuming and actually read. And being a little nicer once in a while wouldn't hurt. Next time someone asks for help and you're going to post, try actually helping. Don't post just to say "figure it out yourself n00b." Even if that's how you feel, what's the point in saying it? It just pisses people off and starts stupid flame wars that lead to nothing. I think we as a people here on NG need to grow up.

Now, thanks to all that offered help, it's greatly appreciated.

This needs basic knowledge in order to create. Don't always expect everything that you want to do, to be already done by someone else. People learn by figuring things by themselves, not having others tell them how to do it.

Why does everyone assume that I just want someone to make a game for me? Where did I ever say that? I'm asking because I WANT to learn, and for the 1242342345 time I DID TRY. I tried everything that I could before I asked, BOTH times. Posting on the BBS requires basic knowledge as well. Learn to read people, gahh.

Now, for those who actually helped, THANK YOU! It's very much appreciated.
