I'll be honest with you, I really liked the old style because it felt so unique.

We didn't go that way for the remake because it would take way too long to recreate a full game with hand drawn images. The old prototype had only 3 levels so it was a great opportunity to try something new but now that we are working on a full game with 16 levels it's an other story. We are only 3 in the team and Jade is doing all the art by herself. It was a smarter choice to use photoshop. This also gives us the opportunity the change the designs of the levels easily, something you can't do when it's hand drawn on paper.

But I agree with you, the old style had really a unique appeal that you don't see often!

Thanks!
What's funny is that even though we remade the game from scratch 3 years later with a completely new rhythm mechanic (it's a music game), we used the same design for some of the levels (like the pirates one) that's why we have some similar screenshots.

The old version does have some nostalgic charm. It sort of reminds me of old Petson And Findus games.
Lots of improvement on the new version though :D

Thanks!
You are right, the hand drawn style of Petson And Findus is kinda similar but wow there is a lot of stuff going on that picture!
I've never heard of that game though.

Thanks guys!

About the UI, we wanted to keep it simple because there is a lot of stuff happening around the screen. In the example you give it's only 2 guys fighting each other and they always stay around the same spot in the screen so the UI doesn't interfere with the gameplay. In our game each level has a different objective and the action can be anywhere around the screen so we designed a small and subtle UI that fits our gameplay.

Here is a video if you want to see the game in action:

Hey guys! We made a music game prototype 3 years ago and decided it would be worth working on it again! Here are the before and after screenshots (3 years ago and now) The old version was all made with pen and paper then scanned and integrated into the game. The new version is all made in Photoshop. The game is BeatBlasters III
