Dude what the hell are you talking about? The guy is asking for opinions, based on the price he was quoting. You might be an amateur so maybe you are ok with doing free work for the rest of your life.

If charging people in middleschool makes me feel entitled to be paid for my work, then my degree in animation at the least gives me enough clout to give this guy advice.

Response to: How to spread the word? Posted January 7th, 2012 in Animation

Please believe me, I am not trying to be mean, just honest...but that looks like shit. If anything that teaser makes me want to stay as far away from that movie as possible.

Anybody can make a video promising a bunch of spectacular things. You may as well have just filmed yourself saying, "watch my movie, it will be good!".

You have to show people a sample of what your promising. That's the definition of a teaser. If your movie is going to be 30 minutes of spinning balls, consider me not teased.

Response to: Animation Pricing; Or why art costs Posted January 7th, 2012 in Animation

That's a reasonable price if you already have the shots worked out and storyboarded in advance.

Response to: Animation Pricing; Or why art costs Posted January 6th, 2012 in Animation

I think some of you guys are getting confused. when we are talking about charging people, we aren't talking about group projects and collabs with friends. Also, volunteer internships are a different thing altogether. I was talking about somebody commissioning you for a service. It's up to you to decide the difference.

Also, that "I'm a kid in highschool so I shouldn't charge people" idea is bullshit. Being in highschool or underage has nothing to do with it if you have a skill and talent. When I was in highschool and everybody found out I could draw, everybody I knew started hitting me up for free art ALL. THE. TIME. After a while I started charging them something like $5 for pinups and stuff and they were happy to pay it. Once you start pumping out work for free people start to take your talent for granted and are in your face every day telling you they want another poster sized color drawing with 20 characters on it. Normal people can't understand the value of art until you stick a price tag on it. If you don't see that early on then you're setting yourself up to be taken advantage of later.

Building "experience"? If you are already producing quality work, then you've obviously already have the experience from working on your own projects and stuff with your friends.

All I'm saying is that there is nothing wrong with doing this stuff as a hobby, that's different from what I'm talking about. If you are trying thinking about making this a career, you have realize that people will gladly screw you when given the opportunity.

--whew, that was a long post. I'm a jaded artist, can you tell?

Response to: Animation Pricing; Or why art costs Posted January 6th, 2012 in Animation

This is a subject that really annoys me. People are more than willing to drop a couple thousand dollars for a 5 page html website, but when it comes to animation people always want "volunteer" work or "student artists" to weasel free art. And they always want a ridiculous amount of animation.

Here's the best advice you'll ever here in your life:

NEVER WORK FOR FREE!!!!

Like never. Even if people can't afford to pay you what your stuff is worth, they should at least be able to pay you something.

(and please note, I'm not talking about collaborations and personal projects, I'm referring to work for hire)

Response to: Critique my back flip Posted January 6th, 2012 in Animation

the actual mid air spinning part of the flip still needs more frames with less frames on the initial jump and drop before he lands, if that makes any sense.

just out of curiosity, did you reference this flip from a video?

Response to: Critique my back flip Posted January 5th, 2012 in Animation

yeah, I agree it needs to slow down the closer you get to the apex of the flip

Response to: I want your opinion on a series Posted January 5th, 2012 in Animation

I think for somebody with no prior experience in animation, it's a good start. Even though the animation is just basic motion tweens, I think the people posting on it were being a little harsh.

I've seen way worst things than that on NG before.

Response to: Software Posted January 5th, 2012 in Animation

anime studio is pretty cheap and easy to find.

Here is one that I just freestyled without reference. It's still kind of off.

Response to: Dilemma (duration of a movie?) Posted December 21st, 2011 in Animation

Doesn't matter how long it is, as long as it's good. You might want to consider going back and removing any unnecessary parts from your movie that don't support the story.

this isn't really a tutorial per se, but it's still something I like to go back and review from time to time:

Response to: Staying on task Posted December 21st, 2011 in Animation

you just have to stay focused and keep remembering what made you want to start that particular animation in the first place. Never lose sight of that initial spark that got you excited about it.

It's also a delicate combination of knowing when you should take a break and knowing when you need to just sit down and do it. Don't spend too much time thinking about doing, just do it and the motivation will naturally come as you continue to work.

you just have to keep at it and be mindful of lulls in the action, especially during this holiday season.

you need to add an arc to that motion, it's like his head is on a turn table.

make a flip book with index cards and then photograph it with a webcam or scanner into monkey jam.

Response to: Animating my Cut-out character Posted December 10th, 2011 in Animation

I would do this if you had him cut up in layers in an fla. file already

Response to: Frame by Frame Posted December 10th, 2011 in Animation

you might want to animate on 2's if you're using 24fps, meaning instead of having a drawing every frame, draw every 2 frames.

It'll save you some work, unless you're going for super smooth, disney-like animation

Response to: What's wrong with my Animations? Posted December 8th, 2011 in Animation

yeah, your animation isn't really that bad. I think people may just be referring to the quality of the artwork. But that will get better with time and practice.

And you seem to be making decent scores, so I don't think you really have anything to worry about.

Response to: Your thoughts on "Goanimate"? Posted December 5th, 2011 in Animation

that's that thing with the premade characters where you just type the dialogue?

I actually like those. To me it's not much different than doing a sprite cartoon. The only gripe I have about it is hearing those same man/woman robot voices in every cartoon. I just wish people would record their own voices.

Response to: can't edit my movie! Posted December 2nd, 2011 in Where is / How to?

it's this movie:

If it comes down to it, I'd rather just keep the crappy audio than to submit it again.

Response to: can't edit my movie! Posted December 2nd, 2011 in Where is / How to?

I just tried ctrl+f5 from a different computer and nothing changed. I still couldn't scroll down. I figured if it as a connection problem then I wouldn't be able to scroll down in my other movie. But editing that one works fine.

can't edit my movie! Posted December 2nd, 2011 in Where is / How to?

Ok, so I have a problem that's driving me insane. I have a cartoon on NG with terrible audio. I went back and fixed the audio, but NG's site WILL NOT let me edit it.

The problem is when I go to my flash submissions and hit edit on that particular movie. The next screen that pops up is the uploader. It uploads the file but then the page will not scroll down past the 'author credits' window.

I took a screenshot to show what I'm talking about:
http://www.newgrounds.com/dump/item/043e 75cd5c4b4080802a33c52a114e9a

I've tried refreshing the page and opening in different browsers and I don't know what the hell to do. I have another movie on here that doesn't give me the same problem, it's just something to do with that particular movie I guess.

I figure as a last resort, I can just delete my original movie and upload the new one, but I don't want to loose my page views/score/favs.

does anybody have any suggestions?

there was a whole lot more crap in the portal and everybody's standards were lower. The worst stuff on here now doesn't compare to some of the poop I remember seeing back in the day.
