I fully support the free download option. I'm not a professional, and for me the greatest reward in all my musical experience has always been the reward of knowing that a few people love what I do. Sure, money would be great, but I simply don't have the fan-base to sell out, at the moment. And if ever I do get such a fan base, then I'll worry about charging people a dollar to have a copy of my music. Because, at the moment, even if I got a dollar for every single listen of every song I have posted, I'd still have to work a full-time job.
When it's time to sell-out, then I'll still probably post stuff here, because it's all in good fun. Art is for sharing. It's wonderful if people wish to pay for my music, but here isn't the place, unless it's commission work, which can be found here.
In short, you don't like the deal NG is offering you? Then use a pay-site. And realize that after a year, you'll probably have five bucks, if you're lucky.
That sucks. I feel bad for winning now. I still wouldn't mind hearing your piece though.
Don't feel bad, dude. You clearly won, and I'm cool with that. You can just click my name...it's the first track on there (I won't link it here...you know why). I had a lot of fun making it, at least. That's the important part, I think.
Oh, and if you're asking me what I put on...well...uh...I work mostly with Garageband presets, with minor tweaks. I feed a single USB mic direct into GB, and modify sounds, usually just a little reverb, sometimes a guitar pedal FX or two for the individual tracks. I then pull it all together with a master reverb, so all the tracks sound like they're in the same space. I will alter EQ for individual instruments, but up until now, I've just left the master EQ alone (amateur, I know). After that, I try to adjust volumes for individual tracks to make them stand-out/fade-in at appropriate times.
Frankly, I'm kinda shocked at what I've been able to get done with so little knowledge...
Well, it does give me starting point, at least. I do notice that my mixes sound a lot fuller in AAC format, and lose a lot of resonance once formatted to .mp3. Perhaps even just cutting the low frequencies would enable me to get louder, direct from the mic. And it seems that you're telling me to run 2 master EQs at the same time, which I never thought of doing...
How's progress, everyone?
Great...totally got my second piece finished. Aaaaaand totally lost in the first round! *sniff* I've...I've got something in my eye...*sniffle*...I'm totally NOT a little bitch! *sniff*
Hey peoples...new to this thread, just heard about it in the NGADM14. I'd very much love to get some reviews and ideas for improving my own style, which was once entirely computerized, but has now gone almost entirely acoustic (amazing what a few years of makin' tunes does to one's sense of musical style).
Anyways, by way of introduction, I reviewed this:
A gloomy but shiny little classic/jazz crossover
And I would like to hear some thoughts on this:
Swing music. What can I say?
Hey, great tips here...I've clearly got to work on my own mix, so I'm whipping through as many threads as I can to figure out what I can do better. I'm wondering how to boost the overall volume of my tracks. I notice that I've got to nearly double my volume to get the same loudness as I get when, say, listening to the radio. I know that a lot of this is due to over-compression used professionally for radio play, and it can (and does) kill dynamics. I'm wondering if there is a middle ground, and how to achieve it.
Great job guys! I shall bow-out and leave my next attempt for next year! I look forward to hearing more great music from you all!
Much love;
-Ceevro
But hey, there's nothing holding me from loving you back. (No kissing though. That's where I draw the line)
...I'm good with that. As long as you know that I hug with tongue.
As your direct competition, I'm required to hate you, Spadezer. But that doesn't mean I don't love you. I've been refreshing the thread all day...
Gad zooks...do I ever suck at this whole 'puter thing...can't even link a .gif!

GAAA!!! You guys are pure EVIL! *keeps doing the potty-dance*
Haha! I try so hard to speak Text, and yet fail so miserably. I just can't bear to put something into writing that isn't grammatically correct.
So...who else is doing the potty-dance, waiting for the results to come out? I don't expect to stay alive, but this has already been so much fun that I really do want to keep going at it.
TheMoebiusProject, you've been disqualified. Sorry about that.
Most. Polite. Deathmatch. EVAR.
And I actually AM Canadian!
Workflow is another issue. You're working with real instruments, so you have to be open to constantly switching between roles and be very comfortable with a segmented production process.
Metal bands get it done because there's multiple members and usually a different person taking care of the studio side.
A solo metal writer/recorder/producer will have a truckload of work to go through to produce a track.
I'd say metal is one of the hardest genres to excel at on your own, because you need both technical ability with a real instrument as well as great production/mixing/mastering skills within a genre that's very hard to get a top notch sound out of .
I honestly don't think that metal is harder than any other genre per se, but the difficulty lies in knowing what sounds awesome, and what sounds like being a try-hard...but that's with anything. For me, I have all the equipment to play metal, and the knowledge to mix it up fairly well, but I find that I just can't bring myself to sing tough-guy BS with anything other than eye-rolling sarcasm. Which is why I always gravitate towards writing songs as subtle (or not-so-subtle) jokes. People can't make fun of me if I'm already making fun of myself!

My apologies...I thought that it was to be within the first 2 weeks...I admit I might have misread.
...And I still haven't gotten a judge-review yet. Do I have to do a request?
I'm enjoying the hell out of this whole process. I've already got my round 2 piece ready to go (within the rules...but is that massively overconfident? You guys are all spectacular!)...I can hardly wait!
I'm loving seeing the talent around here! If any of you wanna collab after the contest, lemme know! I play a mean guitfiddle, I'm told...
Well, peeps...been sitting on this one for a few days to see if people actually thought it was any good. And I was not expecting what I got.
I apologize to those of you using radio compression, or those of you used to it. Compressing too much kills the dynamics, so you may have to access that volume knob of yours (I believe the sound guy should get the best sound, and the listener should select the best volume...the music industry would disagree, but I'm an ARTIST, dammit!).
This was all done acoustically. I plugged nothing in.
Uh...super-happy song about crappy relationships?
And the entries I've heard so far have been amazing! I hope this is good enough!
Awriiiiight! This is the third time I've entered, and the first time I've made the cut! All it took was for me to play guitar like Tommy Emmanuel... Looks like the level for this match is through the roof! You are ALL worthy opponents! Congrats to those who made it!

Well...here's my entry. This is a solo performance on a single guitar. I hope it's good enough to make the cut this year!
Classical Gas, my arrangement, in the style of Tommy Emmanuel.
Looking forward to the challenge! Best of luck to all, and with this pool, just getting in will be one hell of an accomplishment!
Audio deathmatch, eh?
Well...here ya go! My audition!
70's style funk, heavy on the BASS!
I'm in! I play a rather eclectic mix of stuff...so you'll have to help me decide what genre I represent...
Deathmatch, eh? Well, do take the time to listen to the WHOLE entry. The gradual buildup was what I was going for here, but I assure you that the 2gigs of recording data it took to make this song were worth it! These are all live-recorded instruments, played by yours truly! Just be glad I'm not coming after your lady!
Gradually layered epic happy!
Hey dudes! I LOVE doing orchestral stuff! And so, I'm entering this MAC!
This is my entry, I call it 'Baby Sitar'
Orchestral arrangement with BIG BEAT!
I do acoustic classical style music...just click on my user name to hear a variety of the types of songs I do. If you like my style, get back to me. I can easily compose new music to meet your deadline.
