The only time you would need to install drivers for a processor is if your trying to overclock it from the desktop or something. You usually change the frequency / voltage of your motherboard and processor through the bios though. You shouldnt have any problems with replacing your motherboard as well, everything should work fine, hell it could probably be a different motherboard and you would be fine too, its not like motherboards have drivers you need to install to get them working actually working, not just like suited to your personal needs (current flow / voltage / rpm stuff like that) cuz if they did.. they wouldnt be working then now. hah.

It sounds like the trackpoint something in your laptop has malfunctioned, it happens alot in latitude laptops. if you have a laptop you should disable the serial keyboard and port options via the bios.
That should fix your problems with erratic movements with your mouse. (:
