NAC - dropped.
RAC - i have no idea.
MAC - could use revamping, as it kinda just fizzled out.
FL Core - gone for years.
NGADM - still going strong, but its annual and not due for a while.
Clabtrap - should be on again this year at some point but i know nothing about it.
AIM - going right now isnt it? so yeah
@Bosa - Sup dude werent you gonna make a hella big contest?
Halloween - still happens every year

I feel like I'm forgetting one but yeah theres plenty to look forward to. Probably some random person will make some random contest with random prizes at some random point too, so there's always that as well.

nice list :) saw audio the other week it went off

theres a good production video of audio going through his headroom track on youtube - and if anyone wants I've got an insideinfo sample pack

haven't heard much neonlight, I might have to

Anything on this playlist is worth listening to. Well like 95% of it is at least.

Also if you dont already, Neurofunkgrid, Neurohop, InspectorDubplate, and Darkstepwarrior are all promoters that upload quality dnb on the tubes.

Response to: Music Production - Pc Vs Mac Posted February 27th, 2014 in Audio

Functions of apple os and windows are not the difference that matters. Its simply cost effectiveness. You pay 2-3 times more for an apple computer of equal ability. If you want to fork the extra dough, go for it. Apple is closed source, so if you are new to computing you might consider its lesser option range a small advantage, but its not really an advantage to be stupid with computers, and production probably isnt for you if thats the case.

Response to: Ew/daw Question... Posted February 16th, 2014 in Audio

Wordbuilder is no longer its own program. You should update your version of PLAY. It runs inside of play now, and it works in FL a lot smoother. If you really want to run the old school version, there is a work around but If I recall correctly it involves running a VST shell that allows it to open and it has really strange set up and fuck that....just update play, haha.

Response to: Music Production - Pc Vs Mac Posted February 15th, 2014 in Audio

Buy a PC unless you need to use Logic. You'll pay about half as much for one.

Response to: The Audio Forum Lounge Posted February 13th, 2014 in Audio

Did somebody say online free theramin that you can play with your mouse?!? Wewwwwww

Shit sounds really good actually. I'd like it in a VST so I can automate it with my XY pad.

Wait, for vocal work? I'd be curious what kinda results you get. Sounds like a shitload of saturation for vocals. Using guitar effects none the less. Are you using them, like, really subtle?

Response to: Music Theory - Modulation Posted January 27th, 2014 in Audio

Well who says you need to modulate back? I mean I get referencing an intro for an outro but if you don't feel comfortable doing modulation there you can always just reference a motif and end in a different key.

That said, I'm not too good at modulation at all. Inspired or not it either comes out too mechanical or just bad...especially if I TRY to, like making it a goal.

Response to: Sound Design; Where to start? Posted January 25th, 2014 in Audio

Like music you can either record, sample, or synthesize. Doing sfx gives you great perspective. Things like higher bit-depth and sample-rate become important. You learn to push effects to their extreme, and you find yourself using synth features you probably never would have before. Its very enlightening.

That said, you kinda just pick up trick after trick on what things you record and how you may use said recordings. You more you make sfx, you more you learn to break down every sound into its bits and pieces. Take for example a punch effect, you have the meaty slap sound (which gives organic texture but is rather boring sounding) as well as some kind of exaggerated impact (maybe slapping wood, or crunching a vegetable) to give it that beefy quality. DesigningSound.org is a great resource (check their vid section) for a daily read.

I found myself starting out by just making general sounds like impacts, foley, etc. Like film scoring you can also start out with personal projects like overdubbing things that already have audio (your favorite show, or short movie for example).

Now before you break out your wallet and go buy a bunch of synths and sound libraries. Realize that your most useful first tool is a mic to record. Now recording in the studio with a mic & interface is ideal, but in the world of sfx it may not be as practical. If you need a recording of a train passing by you wont find one that fits in your bedroom. Portable or handy recorders are a wonderful first purchase for an inspiring sound designer. In the states they go for anywhere between 100 and 400 dollars. Dont think you need to spend a shitload of money. I find that the DR40 from tascam, as well as the H2n, and H4n from Zoom are great first choice. The DR40 & H4n both allow you to use external mics, which can come in handy if you wanna expand and take things more seriously.

Now if youre really hankering for a new synth, think about a granular synthesizer. These allow you to use audio recording and manipulate them at a finite level beyond the spectrum of what audio editing tools will allow. Some popular choices are Harmor, Alchemy, and Iris. For sound design I like Alchemy the most.

Sound effects libraries you should generally avoid unless youre in a pinch and need a sound you just cant get right. I personally like Blastwave Effects, but thats only cuz I'm a big follower of Ric Viers the owner.

Hope this helps

Ooooh this makes me excited for reasons. How much information can you give us on specs and set up?

Woops, I missed this. Its called the signet 105 series. Price will be $999 normally, with a $799 promo price to start for the shell pack. It is EXTREMELY punchy and projects like no other kit I've played. The kick drum almost sounds like an 808 with some good heads on it. So far I've only seen two designs, one is like natural wood, the other is small pinstripes with funny colors (kinda like a 70s wallpaper). There's some pictures in this random thread. Looks like a bunch of our locations made the same mistake haha.

So many audio companies have such insufficient and shitty tech service. I mean if you spend a grand with a company, you should be able to get them on the phone or in email within a few days time. I think thats reasonable to expect. Not even same day. But definitely not fucking 3+ days.

So i'd like to say im excited to have a big new interface and 4 new mics, but alas I havent gotten to use them because they arent workingggggggggg. Time to spark another joint and think of some cock jokes I guess.

Response to: Tinnitus and audio care. Posted January 20th, 2014 in Audio

This is why I suggest to anyone looking to work in audio (and especially in live sound) to see an audiologist and get yourself some custom molded earplugs that attenuate 10 or 15db. The custom molds don't affect how you hear, they just perfectly turn the volume down a little. Well...almost perfect. This way you can still pump out good mixes and work with loud audio without damage.

And if you just like going to shows or pumping up the volume with your band, then get yourself some high end ear plugs for like 30-50 bucks. If you're one of those kids that destroyed your hearing with shitty ear buds on an mp3 player, well than you are just dumb because probably tons of people told you that your music was hella loud along the way. What they don't tell you is the solution - higher fidelity ear buds. They dont require being as loud to sound good.

Rockwool.

Sorry I shoulda just asked, how thick is the rockwool? I'd say 200mm thick rockwool would be pretty good for bass trapping.

I'd keep an eye out for lower frequencies. How are you attenuating sub 250hz? Foam wont take you any lower than that and thats where most room modes fundamentals are. Otherwise it looks sweet! Has a good unique look to it.

In all honestly, it is a surface....that controls things.

So like most control surfaces are for controlling transport controls and faders in your mixer. A lot of times they are just MIDI controllers, and usually they are assignable so you can use rotaries and faders and pads to control whatever variables you want(such as ADSR, effect control, etc). Sometimes they use other things besides MIDI such as MMC, HUI, or MCU. In this case I'm guessing its MIDI via WIFI, and its free....assuming you have a tablet or smartphone.

A lot of people confuse the term MIDI controller with control surface, as well as the term Console. A MIDI controller can be a control surface, its just a more generic term for anything that uses midi to control stuff. A console can also be a control surface, except its purpose is also more broad, generally it also acts as an audio interface as well.

Most closed back headphones have a bit of a boost in the lower region. The 770s have a relatively flat response. They are still by-in-large my favorite headphones in and around the 200 dollar pricepoint though. No headphones are perfect. Consider this chart when using them for mixing/mastering.

Response to: Why does Garageband have a bad rep? Posted December 12th, 2013 in Audio

Garageband and FL both used to legit be bad.

I mean Garageband used to only have crappy loops you could put together. FL used to be a plugin sequencer that had some stupid loops too.

Its just carry over from people not knowing that its gone legit. And in turn, some people jump on that train without really any knowledge, because they arent experts and dont really care. FL went legit a lot sooner, and it had its name against it too, hence the change from FruityLoops to FL Studio (The CEOs even made an article on why they dropped the FruityLoops term), so yeah.....deep seeded carry over.
