It's actually a traditional Egyptian Derbuka made out of wood and fish skin. It has a much more organic feel to it resembling the tone of the Bongos, but with a much sharper tone. Unfortunately it's not ceramic, so it's not as brilliant.

But dude.... the shape, tone, and material used are identical. How is it different being 'traditional'?

Hell yeah man doumbeks are one of the funnest hand drums to play. Looks like you have a nicer ceramic one. Mine's okay sounding but its synthetic so you can't get those really nice open tones.

Officially jelly of that.

projector program. Or a combination of the two. Just think that you get more out of an experience : out of say... Alice in wonderland movie spliced with Nemo backdrop on a huge screen than a
bunch of extremely expensive lights.

A good projector and backdrop would probably cost me about just as much. I sell DMX lights at my work so manufacturers sell me stuff at cost (about half of MAP pricing). But the sound and lighting part is least important. Most venues will have their own.

Speaking of expensive, how much do you think all that equipment would cost as a grand total?

Well ignoring cabling, power, software, and the laptop, here's the pricing breakdown for MAP pricing:

MPK88 = 700
Launchpad-S = 170
Scarlett2i2 = 150
CMD PL-1 = 100
CMD MM-1 = 150
Total: $1270
Total for me however will be around $700 cuz I get those special discounts.

Do you have some of that equipment already?

I have everything except the CMD controllers which havent hit the market yet.

What kinda show are you talking about?

It can be adapted for any genre, but in this case I would like to develop both a neurofunk and glitch hop set.

Better have a real good consistency playing in shows if I'd be investing in that. Personally I don't : see the point in using live synths unless I really know what I'm doing or it's a sit down concert.
From my experiences Fl rarely crashes due to synths. Then again I'm not plugging anything in.
But crashes happen quite often in live shows.. As long as you don't break into a sweat and feint
from nervousness, its not a huge issue to just reboot it real quick. That is if its simple enough to
reboot.

Well I wouldnt do a live show until I had practiced and gotten my side of things down, but I'm really tired of DJs and their standards and I want a performance thats more respectable on stage. Fading in and out takes near zero skill. Some people use a launchpad or maschine to trigger extra samples or effects but thats not enough for my satisfaction...which is where the performance mode and live synths come into play.

Since I'm here, I might as well ask the dumbest question ever.
What is midi? Is it another word for synth/effects hardware?

MIDI is just data for what youre doing on a controller. So when you press a key on a MIDI keyboard it sends the data (MIDI) which says how hard youre pressing the key, what key youre pressing, and for how long youre pressing it. Same goes for moving faders and rotaries, and hitting pads. So MIDI is just a name/standard for sending that kind of data.

There are non musical tasks that are also done using MIDI data, such as controlling lights.

I'm not gonna point out more holes in the 4 instrument definition you guys got going. I only suggest that in the future you be a bit more stern. Solo instruments (percussion included) makes things a lot simpler both for judges and competitors. There's so much you can do with sound, 4 individual monophonic instruments is plenty.

That said,

If I find any free composition time I'll definitely join in on some or all of these

Footnote: The MPK would also need to control the fade ins and outs of deckadance, as well as control the synths parameters...also tabbing between different instruments with the control options on the launchpad so I'm not just using one synth the whole time.

Wicked Ass Performance Idea

Okay so I have this idea in mind. Tell me if you think this would work.

I have an image of a live-stage performance using these tools:

- Laptop
- Novation Launchpad-S
- Akai MPK88
- Behringer CMD set up
- Scarlett 2i2

To do this all in one instance of FL:

- Run performance mode for custom improv intro to the set with the launchpad
- Run deckadance 2 as a plugin to fade into regular DJ mode with the CMD controllers
- Have a synth up the whole time for the MPK to do live key improv with performance mode and select songs being mixed in deckadance.

And then within deckadance have decks 1 and 2 be for regular mixing, and then 3 and 4 be for remixing tracks with intelligent cue points set up.

Tie that together with a custom DMX lighting show that I could design, and some QSC KW series speakers n subs for a sound system....and I think that might just be a performance worth seeing....IF.....IF I can figure out how to seemless do all that in once instance of FL with no instability.

Thoughts???

What are the differences between the original?

Brighter less laggy lights.

Mobile support (can be bus powered from a mobile device too).

Buttons are all blank now, and it comes with sticker sets instead.

Not a huge update but FL has support for this model specfically and i think its only like 40-50 bucks more.

We got these new versions of the launchpad (they call em Launchpad-S) at work and I couldnt not buy one. This shit integrates perfectly with FL. Super bright ass LEDs, no lag.

It even comes with FL stickers <3

P.S. This is what it looks like with bright ass white lights on in the room. Its that bright.

There's a number of irreversible things you can do in FL. Sometimes they give you a warning like with the performance mode macro, but others they don't. I suggest playing around to figure out what is un-undoable that you're doing, then taking more caution with those types of actions.

General rule of thumb is that if you have to hit "okay" to do something, its likely irreversible....such as deleting channels or tracks.

Response to: Buying digital piano (500-600 GBP) Posted May 10th, 2013 in Audio

Bonus suggestion:

If you wanna be a nerd like me you could use your monitors in conjuction with an MPK88 and some kickass sound packs.

That combo is technically the most powerful but obviously software prices differ greatly depending on what type of sounds you want.

The plus side - most control, ever expanding.

Downside - the action is not quite as good as yamaha, but still better then casio & m-audio.

Response to: Buying digital piano (500-600 GBP) Posted May 10th, 2013 in Audio

Oh god its michhimself

Loans was right. Yamaha is not only the only one of those companies that builds acoustic pianos, they are also the only ones that build their own keyboard beds. Everyone else outsources.

Also, the casio sounds are pretty cheesy, especially on the privia series stuff. You might consider getting a stage piano instead though. The DGX series stuff is less portable, less solid construction.

My suggestions:

- The P95 from yamaha has good construction, portability, and MIDI in/out. It also has line outs for connection to a PA or keyboard amp. The downside is that it only has a couple basic sounds. The plus side is that you can get it for about half your budget, leaving you plenty of room to get some software packs that are good for live use and ultimately having both better sound and construction, and portability.

- If you already have a PA/speakers/amp to plug into, then you might consider the yamaha MM8. Its going to have the solid construction that the P95 has but instead of paying for built in speakers you pay for having a relatively large arsenal of sounds. That one also pushes your budget a bit, but you should be able to haggle your way down to fit it.

Research is daily thing regardless of status.

I'm stuck in the same spot. I think as long as you keep interest and work hard you will slowly get there. The exciting part where one song can easily be regarded as having higher quality anything over a previous is gone. Now maybe only very small details see improvement, and smaller ones spawn from that, and so on.

A slow tidious grind.

Or you may luck out somewhere along the way.

Who knows.

Its a fuckin mystery to me mate.

Response to: Pro Tools 11! Posted May 2nd, 2013 in Audio

The video intergration tools are a small plus, although I'm not sure who would want to run an HD video in an already process heavy and likely ram heavy environment.

In my experience I usually get an already edited video, and the best performance is when running very lowfi versions of it.

The 64 bit engine is nice and all, but its nothing I wouldnt expect (I think just about every major DAW has it now). I'm also a little bit confused by it, are they saying you can only run AAX plugins in 64bit? If so, it sounds like a proprietary thing which I dont really jive with.

I really dont want to feel like they are just playing catch up. I really want to be one of the guys who likes pro tools, but Avid as a company is having a lot of trouble. They had so many layoffs last year I feel like they only had time to just implement performance enhancements to not seem like its falling behind.

As a mixing tool, or an collaborative engine, its still got its potential due to studios stuck on old HD systems because they've dug themselves into a proprietary hole.

I tried with ten, and im trying again now.....but I cant seem to see anything that makes pro tools special or worth the second highest daw pricetag on the market next to ableton 9 sweet....which I also dont think is worth the price anymore.

Its really hard when you sell things like pro tools for a living. They have 10 different choices in front of them ranging from 60-800 dollars and I cant tell them that the 800 dollar one does any more then the 60 dollar one =/
