i also have a subwoofer, and it also has the "plug into wall" type of prongs, but also balanced and unbalanced audio ins and outs

The problem is, I don't have the plugs to plug into the wall.

Could you provide the models of everything please? That will clarify some stuff for me.

You should just need what they call an IEC cable for power. Its a pretty standard power cable that any music shop should have because guitar amps, PAs, and even some keyboards also use this.

If you have a sub, then you need to plug your first and second analog outputs in the 1st/2nd or Left/Right inputs on the sub, the cables for that are likely just 1/4" balanced. Then run the balanced outputs on the sub to the respective speakers for left and right (use the +4 inputs, cuz those are balanced and better for carrying line level signal. This will also mean another pair of balanced cables either xlr or 1/4" to 1/4".

In the US, this should cost around 10-15 per cable for balanced cabling, and 10-25 for the IEC cable.

4 balanced cables = $40-$60
IEC cable = $10-$25
Total should be $50-$80

Response to: Orchestration Questions Posted June 23rd, 2013 in Audio

I have to admit, technology seriously limits my composition desire. The thought of using more articulations has defaulted to being just....like adding another instrument or being able to add one less instrument.

Oh fun tips for you guys.

If you dont jive too well with score reading you may consider downloading MIDIs of different classical composers stuff. They are all pretty much free and easy to find.

On woodwinds for example I've been using similar set ups to brahms quite a bit. His are nice and rounded out and full sounding with usually 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, an oboe, and a bassoon. (as a side note i would like a beard like brahms too)

MORE QUESTIONS WEWWWW

This isnt necessarily orchestration but anyways.....so I studied counterpoint in college quite a bit and through that discovered that Im very horizontally challenged. Schenkerian counterpoint exercises really didnt help me at all to write more natural sounding horizontal lines.

So my question to yall is, what do you do when youre stuck horizontally? I find myself having to basically restart the whole song to make any progress, wherass when im stuck vertically, i feel it pretty easy to either theoretically play out where i should go with the harmony, or even just trial and error.

Maybe I should just write all background music and stop trying to write melodies haha.

If your studio monitors are powered (as in they need to be plugged in) then those analog outs are what you should use to plug them up.

Most likely you just need some balanced quarter inch cables, although depending on the speaker you may need quarter inch to xlr. Either way should only be like 10-20 bucks per cable.

Basically you just connect the analog out to the line in or whatever main input you have on the speaker, then just find a volume you are comfy with either on the speaker, the recording interface, or both.

imortal is refering to an audio interface which it sounds like you already have.

Since buying stuff doesnt seem to be an option, you have to learn the characteristics of your crappy headphones so that you can adjust accordingly. Figure out exactly what is fucked up where and intentionally skew your mix to that.

You say they dont have enough bass response so your mixes end up with dominant kicks. If thats the case then figure out by how much and just adjust your mixes on the headphones accordingly. Find a song you know the mix of really well and like and compare it to your own. If anything in your own is fucking loud in comparison (whether it sounds better on those particular headphones or not) then fix that shit.

You gotta be on the ball with this if it really matters to you.

just go from from soundcard to sub input 1 from the headphone out on the front of the scarlett. RCA to the monitors from the sub. honestly not rocket science.

Why would you use the headphone out? He's just trying to hook up speakers and doesnt realize you go through the sub to the monitors not seperate.

You should use the normal line outs on the back so that you can hook up headphones still.

I like to have a lot of varying instrumentation of each motif I write. Like melodic trading if you will. But I find it hard to restate something that just happened in a song with a different instrument. Transitions between the instruments always feels really blocky and forced, and as a result I tend to hold on to the instruments being used and rather transition into a different motif or harmony because it sounds more natural for my writing style. However, this always makes for a song that goes a bit too much alll over the place in terms of emotion.

So I guess my goal is to figure out how to make more instrumentally dynamic pieces that dont feel like the song has ADHD. Thoughts?

Bullshit. Even overclocked that doesnt compare to anything "state of the art." They put those processors in the cheap pre-assembled PCs that cost like 600-800 bucks. I've got a 2 year old computer with a better processor then that.

Nope not since 10.5. You can bridge any plugin to allocate its RAM to a seperate 'IL Bridge' process. Allowing any amount of RAM. Although without that, yes you are limited to 4gigs if you simply run the extended memory version of FL, 2 gigs if you dont.

If you really want to learn to effectively and creatively make basslines/reeses/wobbles, here are some topics to research and experiment with:

- Additive synthesis
- FM synthesis
- Vocoding
- Granular resynthesis
- Distortion
- Bit reduction/lo-fi
- Flanger
- Chorus
- Doubling/fattening
- Notch, Formant & Low pass filtering
- Sidechain compression

Good luck.

All the main gems have been mentioned.

If you are gonna be picky about how niche the library is, then save your pennies for either Hollywood Strings, or 8dio Adagios.

East West does 40-60% off sales a couple times a year so you could just wait until the next one then hop on that.

Coming Soon.

This is the 3d modeling that my acoustician had made up. All from dual acoustics which is a notch up from primacoustics best stuff. Valued at about 4 grand. This is a HUGE step up for me. There will also be a quantum trap behind the desk on the floor, as well as back of the room traps and paneling which comes out to just under 25% coverage.

Pictures and rerecording samples from old and new treatment should be up by the end of the month.

Are you guys as excited as I am? CUZ I AM PUMPED

Response to: Placing Reverb on Master? Posted June 10th, 2013 in Audio

Reverb on a master buss is not uncommon. Its mainly used to make all your instruments sound more like they belong together. As you probably already guessed, it should be used pretty lightly. Its also not always needed, so judge for yourself if the instruments sound well incorporated with each other or not.

Oh, and just for some feedback. The mixtrack is pretty legit for its price. Two things about it make it worth it, one being that it comes with serato dj and not stupid itch or scratch live, and the other being the MPC pads built in (Numark and Akai are brother companies so its actually MPC pads in that thing)...just be careful because the only stupid thing with the mixtrack is that they put the pads right over the platters instead of under them like most controllers, and its quite easy to accidentally hit the platter with your hand and throw a track off beat.

At the moment for the price nothing is really better. The S2 when it lowers price more would compete though. The Behringer CMD controllers that have yet to come out will however top that set up with a comparable price tag.
