Now that its back I fear that itll flare up again

A less articulate and much more noobish ally though...

Response to: My View on Free Will Posted May 22nd, 2007 in Politics

At 5/22/07 03:58 AM, Alphabit wrote: Most people tend to think that you either have free will or you don't, that there is no in-between state. Well, personally, I don't believe in us having complete Free Will over our actions. One argument is that people who have mental health issues do not have free will; and I'm a strong believer in that, and the law itself agrees with me (insanity is a valid defense for crime).

Im not sure Id call insanity a lack of free will. Theres more to the insanity plea than " [Insert Deity/Devil/Supernatural force] made me do it"

That being said, I think that the whole story of free will goes much deeper than that.
I think that we do have some free will, but it is limited. It we had absolute free will; we would be able to levitate in the air, to shoot lightning bolts from our hands and to make things appear out of nowhere, ect... There would be NO limits to possibility; it would be like what some people like to call "heaven."

Thats a tricky point right there. This all hinges around your definition of free will. In my book, we have free will - such things as the law of gravity and evolutionary paths do not constitute a restriction of free will.

The fact is that we DO NOT have 100% free will, we are limited to a certain range of actions!
Now, this is a HUGE range of actions... But it's limited nevertheless.

Without going into such nitty gritty as reflex actions, every motion that a human body can do, we can choose to do at any time. Like if i chose to pick up the pen on the desk in front of me, I could. Every bigger achievement is an extention of basic functions.

Some people say that our ability to do evil is proof of our free will. Yes, it does increase our free will, but it doesn't stop there... If you look at a regular butterfly; you can safely say that they cannot do evil... At least not on purpose (like getting exploding on a car's windscreen). But they do seem to have free will nevertheless, it's just that it is more restrictive in a way; but in another way, they can fly; and that's something that we can't do (without machines that is).

Yes, and thats where my earlier comment on evolutionary paths comes in. We didnt evolve to fly. Just because we lack the naturan equipment nescessary for flight doesnt mean that our free will is restricted. The butterfly flying is one of its basic motor functions, and extentions of said functions. Same with humans.

So yeah, if we had true free will, we should be able to do anything beyond our wildest dreams. So no, we do not have a great deal of free will.

By much the same (but not identical) logic, our free will would always be restricted.
Say we have these powers, telekinesis, flight etc

Now I can fly by levitation, but I want to fly like the birds, so my physical structure changes. Thats your idea of free will existing there. But I grow weary of these abilities, and I want to stop being able to do all this, and my powers vanish - again your version of free will. Now Im powerless to do what I want. Thats a restriction of my free will.

So in conclusion, I can see where youre coming from, but I think youre putting to strict a definition on free will.

Although from the point of not having free will, I know what you mean. I can make you obey me. I can make you think of a pink elephant.

:Ready?

Dont think of a pink elephant! Worked, didnt it? =p

All i can remember is that theres a sniper and his CO in either iraq or afgahnistan or something. The CO orders the sniper to shoot a lil kid they think has been working with the enemy, and they end up fighting about it.

Thats the only clear scene that comes to mind. Please, NG, help me remember what it was!

That makes no sense since you're starting off with a side shot of the rifle firing. Then you scroll and the suddenly the bullet is sudden flying in some other direction. You should start out by showing the bullet from the side then panning behind it. Or animate the gun firing from the shooters point of view and leave the bullet as it is.

What will eventually is a side view for the shot, 90 degree turn into a chase camera then another 90 degree turn back into a sideways cam.

Also the rim along the primer would have been ejected from the casing once the the bullet is fired. So it looks awkward showing the projectile with a hole in the back flying through the air, but now I'm just nitpicking.

I didnt think about that, but youre right

I supposed for the background you could do a radial blur around the bullet as it speeds towards the target and import it to flash.

It was all done in flash anyway. No need to import

That works for the side view of the bullet, but I cant get a smooth transition from camera behind the bullet (like through a car windshield) to the side view (out of a side window).

I think I might have to resort to the mother of all cop-outs... bullet time!!

Really stuck here. Im not sure that this fits into the art forum, so Ill ask you all.

Ive created an effect where the "camera" follows a bullet, before coming round to the side of it. Mainly just shape tweening.

My question is how do I make a convincing background that looks as though it is speeding by, AND rotating around an axis.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Really? Even the Guard destroyer only mounts one, and forfeits its turret and other hull mounts for it. I cant see the land raider having a massive barrel poking out the front of it. It would kinda detract from the sleek image of the LR.

A LR with turbo laser would either be hefty on the points cost or short on other weapons. Kinda defeating the armed-to-the-teeth visage that the LR has about it.

Robotic Tone? Posted May 7th, 2007 in Audio

Hey. I dont really know what Im doing when it comes to audio, Im basic at best. The only audio edtiors I have are Nero wave editor and audacity.

Im hoping someone can help me out. I need to make a few characters in my upcoming movie have a slightly robotic tone to their voice.

Nothing drastic, just enough to sound as though their speech is being modulated by electronic equipment.

If you've ever played Fire Warrior, I need a tonal quality that resembles the Tau voices.

Thanks in advance guys

Bad Parenting Led To Kidnapping? Posted May 6th, 2007 in Politics

I dont know if anyone Stateside has seen this, but im assuming most of the UK team will have.

I sympathise with the parents, and it is a tradgedy that their child has been taken, but does anyone else think that this is a case of severly bad parenting at the root of it?

"..Her parents had been dining at a Tapas bar several hundred metres away but had checked on Madeleine and their other children, two-year-old twins Sean and Amelie, every 30 minutes."

"..Gerry’s sister Philomena slammed Portuguese police for not doing enough to find Madeleine’s faster. "

But the kicker is this:

"The McCanns could have dropped all their three children off at a drop-in creche provided by the Mark Warner holiday firm at the Ocean Club while they dined out last Thursday, or paid for one of the firm’s staff to babysit for them at the apartment, but chose not to use either option."

They would rather leave 3 children, with a combined age of 7, alone in a hotel room instead of paying a few extra euros to use the creche or private childminder.

Of course no-one expects tohave their hotel room broken into, but I have to say I tihnk it was a supremely bad idea to leave the kids alone in the first place.

I can only hope that Madeleine is found safely, and that the parents will have more sense in the future.

Response to: The fourth dimension! Posted May 5th, 2007 in Politics

Time isnt really a fourth dimention.

Think of it this way. There is a 2 dimentional man. he has only height and width, no depth. To him, a circle appears an a solid object, he cannot touch the middle of it without breaking the outer line.

For us, in 3 dimentions, it is as simple as putting your finger on the middle point of the circle.

Its logical that this continues. For a being that exists in 4 dimentions, they would be able to touch the inside of a sphere without breaking any of the outer covering.

Seems impossible to us, but then doing the same to a circle appears impossible to a 2d man
