Love that 'Las aventuras de Mr.Coo' one...
gooey delicious awesomeness.

Locking your background layer is a must when you have the things on it the way you want. Otherwise the stuff in it is still active and you could wind up messing it up.
You'll get the hang of layer pretty quick once you have a basic understanding of how they work. I like to think of them as animation cells piled on top of one another...
Wow, I think that all looks really great.
I didn't know you could do that stuff with actionscript. I think it's really cool how everytime I open the window the grass and ripples in the water are placed a little differently...
If you keep the quality of your art consistant throught the movie it should be pass jugement no problem. :)
I like the idea too.
Poor little flash, blammed in his prime...
Wow, good stuff.
Congratulations to all the winners and runners up, that is a very exclusive list!
I hope sometime soon there will be a listing of the top 50 or so monthly rankings in the portal or on their own page. That would be great.

Well it seems that the 1st place award (and I suppose all the others as well) on the page for the animations has been bumped, but the movies won't get the same exposure because the p-bot listing is still wrong... and that's too bad. :/
This is bull.
A stolen movie nabs first and everybody's awards get knocked down a place...
Someone who deserves 5th wound up with nothing...
I was kind of hoping the results would be up today. I believe they were posted on the 7th last time.

I think, because everyone knew the vote was coming this time and how the content would be selected, many voters probably watched the daily winners soon after they got awards and figured out how much they liked them then.
...or something.
Crud.... I got pre-empted.... sorry... :P

Last month you had a nominated movie. The next time you have one that wins an award or if you get into the top 2,000 (actively depositing) users you can vote again.
So yes, you will get to vote again if you meet the criterea. But not this month, I guess.
<3
Ah, I had no idea what that was for before, I just left some vague comments. Thanks for clearing that up.
I've just gone back and updated mine, I hope they're adequate now...

Sure, there are lots of places where we can let the blame fall. Ones actions are always the result of whatever circumstances have led to them. But we do have to allow for at least some degree of accountability.
Other kids bullied Weise, his relationship with his mother was abusive, his father commited suicide, he was prescribed medications that were clearly not helping. But those actions were also the result of... what? Other actions..? So where can we place the blame?
Should we blame evolution? The big bang perhaps?
Society is a mess, but it always has been and always will be. We each need to try to be at least a little bit more responsible, is all.

Wars. the US alone is involved in two foreign wars and one domestic misnomer dubbed the "war on terror."
I don't agree with any of that. But the reason this (Weise) is getting so much attention is that it is on a much more personal scale. It destroys our comfort and security, he attacked people that he knew and who probably felt pretty safe where they were, many of them children. It was a terrible act planned and carried out by one person and it's something we should try to understand so that we can prevent it from happening more and more often.
It is a horrible tragedy, to be sure, and the fact that his talent as an animator was wasted is a much lesser shame than the lives that were taken, including his own.
This kind of thing is much more personal than the thousands of people who die every day due to disease, famine, war and disaster. To suggest that a tragedy like this should be ignored because the number of casualties is so much lower strikes me as cold-hearted. We should be trying to understand the motivations and circumstances leading to these horrible acts, so that they may be prevented from happening more often.
That said, I hope that the media attention payed to this flash and to Newgrounds will not deter future submissions on the grounds that the author is fearful of being investigated. Flash media is art and censorship is the death of art.

Sweet, I've only seen VVithereD's but he surely deserves it!
That is some great frame by frame with full color, a dark storyline and some awesome charaters.
VVithered had another really good one. Kinda too bad he didn't get an award.

Yeah, Paploete was awesome.
And thanks, I'm glad you liked Tinman. ^_^
Cool, happy to help.
Shape tween is used to make stuff morph, like if you have a circle and want it to become a square. You can't use it with symbols only non-symbol graphics, and it's pretty hard to pull off and look decent. Check flash help to learn all about it. :)
Use a motion tween, not a shape tween. :-)

Whats best?
You should think about how fast you want your character to walk--
walk around for a little while in the way you want your character to move and time it in your head. if it takes you one second to walk two steps then make your walk cycle accordingly (at 24 fps use 24 frames...).
That was awesome! Lol!
I wish I had a malicious space robot to protect me from the terrible secret of space!
Thanks for posting that! ^_^
I just wanted to say that your character looks pretty sweet, and the walk cycle looks good.
Angles other than side or top-down view are very difficult to pull of in a tweened walk cycle in my experience.
You may want to just show from the torso up and have your android bounce like walking while making minimal arm movement...
Can someone tell me how to make a sliding bar for controlling a flash movie, similar to the one used in Synj vs. Horrid 2?
Heaps of thanks for anyone who can help.
All I can think of is breaking it into two or more different files...
I've never done anything with video before but there might be a way to compress it further before you import it... some program or other..?
Well, try optimizing your audio, and maybe any images you may have imported....
Audio is the biggest thing in most flash content. Before you import them you should convert any WAV into MP3's with CDex or another audio program.
You also should go into the publish settings and change the compression rate to the lowest kbps that it still sounds decent.
Maybe that will help... but you should probably provide more details about what you are doing...
Oh yeah, if you are using stream, you have to add frames to the one the sound started in for as long as you want the sound to play. Think of it as just another layer of animation, only one that you hear rather than see... Does that make any sense, I'm terrible at advice. :P
Use 'import to library' from the File menu, find the sound file you want to use, click on the frame you want the sound to start in and in the properties tab (at the bottom, click to enlarge) use the sound menu to put the sound in.
In the sync menu use stream for dialogue and music and stuff that you want to run at a fixed pace to your animation, use event if you want a sound to play as a result of an action regardless of if the animation is continuing (like for when you click a button or something).
Good luck.
At 3/10/05 07:20 PM, crazy_glue wrote: i was wondering, whats the main tool used to draw a character? Do most people use pen tool or do they take squares and circles and modify them?
Use the pen tool if you are good with it... I personally don't understand it. :P Weird bezier stuff.
I think the pencil tool and the paintbrush are much more natural to use.
The pencil tool is good for making clean, even lines. It has a few tool options; straighten (for straight lines with angles), smooth (for nice smooth curves), and ink (to follow the mouse as close as your computer can).
I really like to use the paintbrush the most, it makes nice, messy lines with a width that varies. If the line looks to jagged and awkward use the optimize feature in the Modify menu (or press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+C).
I'm using Flash MX so things might be different in another program, I don't know.
I hope this helps...
Awesome! Thank you Tom for giving us the top 30 list. :) And kudos to all the artists who made it on that very select list.
Yay! The results are up!
Congratulations to the winners! They all did outstanding work. :D
I was kinda hoping for a longer ranking list though, it would be nice to see the top 20, 50 or whatever February flash submissions...
At 3/6/05 04:42 PM, SirGaryColeman wrote: Any chance we can get a timetable on when NG plans to put the winners up?
Yes, just a little post to let us know when the rankings will be availible and possibly answer a few quesions about it would be a major blessing, and reduce the stresses of everyone waiting for the results.
