I had a (probably very unoriginal) idea yesterday and decided to make a very short animated sequence of it. The backgound came out amusingly Firthian.

I too made it through the portal on the first try. But I had been playing with Flash for almost a year before I'd even found Newgrounds and submitted on of my movies shortly thereafter. I had made, maybe fourother "completed" movies just for fun before then.

And how did you feel when you entered?

Pretty good. It was nice to read a lot of supportive comments, and random flaming.

Ever got blammed?

Not yet... but if the quality of movies submitted here keeps escalating the way it has, who knows...

I'm just intereseted because I want to submit my own flash some day :)

Cool. Do it! :)

Very cool so far...

Seems like the kind of game that would feel more natural with mouse movement, not immediate follow-the-mouse, but the slower, slightly delayed kind. Know what I mean...?

Otherwise it's looking great.

This is Firefox's main caching weakness... (although this discussion is now straying off-topic.)

Haha! Very true. :P

However, if you have everything sorted by Date you can find the files you want relatively easily, as long as you get on it right away... :)

Response to: Fat sticks Posted May 30th, 2005 in Game Development

Well I have a couple of ideas for your problem:

1) If you absolutely must have it done with lines; zoom in and make them with the proportions you want, but smaller, convert the pieces to graphics and then scale them accordingly.

2) Simply use the line tool to draw your lines, then Modify > Shape > Convert Lines to Fills.

I hope these are useful suggestions.

Well I'm not sure about with IE or anything other than Firefox. But if you are using FF do a search for cache. When you find the proper cache (should be in a Mozilla directory in the Application Data or whatever) there should be a bunch of gibberish files without extentions, look for the one with an appropriate filesize (it's usually a little bit off from what they are listed on the Newgrounds page) copy it to the directory you want and rename it with the extension .swf.

There is probably a much easier way of doing this, and I know I suck at explinations. Sorry about that, but I hope this helps anyway.

Response to: how do i save flashs to my computer Posted May 30th, 2005 in Game Development

If you have Flash installed on your computer, you can find the file in your browsers temporary files and change the file extension to .swf and watch them that way. Otherwise you have to do the same thing, but create an .html document with the location of the .swf on you computer embedded into it and watch them that way...

Cool stuff.

Lipsync - Spot on, a perfect example of lipsync without using the popular tween technique (though there weren't any long vowels, which is where that technique usually comes in).

Point Blank Trailer - Really nice, looks like it's headed for a daily award with a score over 4.0 if you keep up the same quality.

You're off to an amazing start, good job. :D

At 5/30/05 01:31 AM, Captainfork wrote: For those master animators out there(you know who you are) what is "the ideal" fps? Is a faster fps always better?

Well, to a certain extent, more is better. However I don't think there are any serious animation submissions in excess of 30 fps, as the human eye cannot process images that fast & it gets to be a drag on many processors. I'd say most of the nice, smooth animations on the site use between 20 and 30 fps, and the general thinking is to use 24, which is the same as film or 30; the same as video.

I think is see where your getting at.

A friend of mine created a version of his webpage that uses mostly Flash:
Taesali Web Design; Flash

The major document is a .swf (flash) file but it's embedded into .html (web document).

So you're in the right direction, you can create almost ALL of your web page with Flash, but it's usually just part of the larger presentation.

Response to: Web Knowledge Help! Posted May 29th, 2005 in Game Development

Hmmm... well you can make all sorts of things with Flash, such as a navigable menu and other web content, however you will need to embed it in a web page.

After you've imported the sprite to Flash, select it and choose Modify > Trace Bitmap
Make sure you set the "Curve Fit" to "Pixels"

Response to: need to know how to make flash Posted May 29th, 2005 in Game Development

Alrighty, the files in the portal of Newgrounds are .swf files (small web files), commonly referred to as Flash.

They can be made using several programs, most prominantly Macromedia Flash (which is what most contributors to Newgrounds use).

You can download a free 30 day trial of Macromedia Flash 2004: Here.

But it's not my collab, I'm just one of the folks trying to get in, so I can't tell you with any kind of certainty.

Good luck... ;)

If you use gradients that have a very light color near the middle and grow darker then reduce to an alpha near the edges it looks pretty cool and add the same symbol underneath but bigger and with an alpha, like was already mentioned...

(I suck at explaining things)
