Topic: Mis Stereo Piano Soundfont

Posted: 08/08/08 06:03 AM

Forum: Audio

A while ago I created the MIS Stereo Piano DirectWave samplepack. Unfortunately, not everyone has directwave, so its usefulness was limited.

I found Vienna studio (which sucks fucking balls and I'm never using again) and created a soundfont using those samples; however, they were downgraded from IEEE 32-bit to PCM 16-bit, and while I couldn't hear a difference, it is possible that systems with high fidelity equipment will experience a slight decrease in quality. So, if you do not have DirectWave, the soundfont is now available, although the directwave zip comes with all the original (32-bit) wav files, should anyone want to do something with them.

I also inverted the panning because that's been bugging me for a long time :P

I was trying to make some cool sounding percussion. Instead I made a perfect rendition of a sprinkler.

Been taking private lessons for piano since I was 6, so thats 11 and a half years of piano. I get piano withdrawal if I'm not allowed to improvise on some sort of keyboard for an extended period of time :P

Wow, thanks :D If I find some time (which won't be anytime soon - I hate school), I'll try to find a good soundfont to load these into.

Yes, that is why i included the source wave files, because I don't know how to load the samples into any other format <_<'

There aren't many free samples of individual instruments, so I took the samples from this website, split them up, cut, pasted, and trimmed them by hand into individual wav files, then loaded them into DirectWave. This pack contains the directwave programs and the source wave files (all labeled) to each of the following instruments:

Instruments
- Alto Flute
- Alto Saxophone*
- Bass Clarinet
- Bass Flute
- Bass Trombone
- Bassoon
- Bb Clarinet
- Bb Trumpet*
- Cello
- Double Bass°
- Eb Clarinet
- Flute*
- French Horn
- Oboe
- Piano
- Soprano Saxophone*
- Tenor Trombone
- Tuba
- Viola°
- Violin
* = There are 2 sets of samples for these instruments: Vibrato and Non-vibrato
° = There are 2 sets of samples for these instruments: Arco and Pizzicato

The pack is divided into the MIS Orchestra Instruments and MIS Stereo Piano - If you don't have directwave, you can load the wav files into the sample manager of your choice. The source samples that this pack was built from were released into the public domain with no restrictions. These samples are released into the public domain on a noncommercial basis (use them however you like, just don't make money off it).

MIS Orchestra Instruments (580 MB) - Being Uploaded
MIS Stereo Piano (200 MB)

Songs Made Using the SamplePack
- Risuko's Tears
- Everything Burns

Enjoy!

NOTE: There are over 2700 samples in this pack (2770), and thus it is impossible for me to find all of the mistakes. Please tell me if you find one so I can fix it ASAP. Better yet, fix it for me and send it so I don't have to :D

That is not the point. Isn't is obvious that a professional sound comes from experience? Thats not the objective here, and there are a lot of things that ametuers can do to help their song sound better. Are they going to make it sound professional? No. Are they going to make it sound better? Yes, and getting better is the first step towards sounding professional. Everyone needs practice and advice to get better. Thats what this thread is here for, for christs sake. Saying that the only thing that will make someone's songs sound better is practice isn't true - Its a major portion of it, but whatever happened to tips and tricks? They help. For example, panning, reverb, echo, stereo seperation, mastering, mixing, heck, that PEQ2 tutorial thats sitting a few threads below this is going to help anyone who reads it.

There is no magical formula for making one's songs sound professional. There are things that can help get closer to it.

High quality samples, which usually means good stereo, and high frequencies. Things sounds clear and sharp when they have lots of high frequencies. Not only that, but good low frequencies utilizing the subwoofer helps too. In essense, a full spectrum and realistic stereo usage are what you probably mean by "professional."

The project file has been updated with a now very heavily optimized project. I herded all the reverb into a send track, ripped out all the multiband compression and did a few other tweaks. The song should now be audible with a 48 ms buffer length.

Gawd, making CPU efficient songs is hard! :P

If you think thats a CPU hog, you should have seen the original - It would have made your computer commit suicide :P

I'll try to optimize it further; I am not good at making CPU-efficient sytrus synths <_<

I've gotten a large number of requests for a basic tutorial on FL studio (Apparently no one likes any of the tutorials on google), but I'm a bit apprehensive about doing that because I have no idea if my techniques are at all what is considered acceptable, and I'd rather not poisen the minds of our budding composers (of course in some cases that would be pretty hard to do :P). So I've optimized my loop Sunny Winter Days and made a bit of a walkthrough for it.

Thoughts? Concerns? Profanity? Should I go die in a fire? ;)

Thanks, I found a distinct lack of good sytrus tutorials, and the FL studio help file is a bit... lacking. They told you how to use sytrus, but not how to make synths; so I made this to try and provide a solid basis for sytrus synth creation.

No problem. I'll go a bit deeper, if you want.

You see, a pulse waveform is any type of waveform that is square-like. Pulses are defined in percentages. A perfect Square wave is a 50% pulse. A waveform that is like a square, but shifted halfway over is a 25% pulse. And do that again to the 25% and you get a 12.5% pulse.

Noted, and please do. This is a tutorial, so it should be as accurate at possible :)
