Last time I submitted here, I didn't get a review, but I understand that everyone isn't always available or in the mood.

This is a valuable service, and I enjoy supporting it nonetheless!

That's explained on the first page:

At 7/1/12 05:31 AM, Echo wrote: Why do only 32 people make it in?

Because we're not superhuman alien cyborg things that can handle 64 (or 128) competitors at a go (and because 32 is a nice safe round number :3).

Think of all the reviews they would have to write! In order to do what you're suggesting, they would need more judges.

You read my mind -- also, for comparison's sake, last year there were 110 auditions.

Well, unlike last year's contest, I'm making a song specifically for the audition, and I definitely want to take my time getting it right. "Mr. Chicken" just doesn't want to rush the process, haha.

...I am looking forward to hearing your audition, since you ARE good at it.

Well thank you, but if I don't pace myself and get done what I need to, that may no longer be the case, you see! Also, like I mentioned before, it'll be a remix, so I can focus more on transitions and structuring rather than composition, in order to strengthen the weaker aspects of my producing.

At 7/22/12 09:23 PM, Trampzy wrote: Well there's no rules on what you can and cannot do. Honestly if you do it well then there's no reason it shouldn't work. You'd have to try it though, since there's too many variables to say how it would go. Just don't overdo the compression on the snare, since you need something to still compress afterwards; otherwise you'll just be destroying the sample... unless you want a deranged noise, then crank it.

The compression is probably in the light-to-medium range on both compressors, so I think I'll be alright. It doesn't sound crushed, just a bit tighter, which I assume is the desired effect (sounds nice). Just making sure.

Thanks again for your help!

Response to: Multiband Compression Posted July 22nd, 2012 in Audio

Thanks guys; I'm really starting to understand now. I just have one more question.

Say I have a snare drum track, with a single band compressor on it. The snare track, along with the other drum-related tracks, is outputted to a "drum bus", where multiband compression is applied to all of the drums as a single unit. Is it okay to have 2 layers of compression on the snare like this?

Multiband Compression Posted July 22nd, 2012 in Audio

Would anyone please like to take a stab at explaining multiband compression, in terms of how, when, and if to use it? I've looked at a few tutorials and fumbled my way around a 3-band VST, but it still confuses me. I've read many stories about inexperienced producers completely destroying mixes with this tool, and that makes me hesitant to use it at all. Some people say to avoid it entirely...

Also, I am fairly familiar with "regular" compressors (singleband, I suppose they would be), their use and settings I.E. attack, release, etc...

At 7/3/12 09:00 PM, Step wrote: NOTE: You can still have a remix for your audition. I'm sorry for not specifying this, I forgot to specify it last year too. I'd suggest posting an original work because in the end for the NGADM you'll be making original works, but a remix can still accurately display your musical skills (if it's not a MIDI rip of course!).

Assuming this is still true, I plan to submit a remix which is not a MIDI rip and does not use samples from any external copyrighted source before the deadline, hopefully. This accommodates the current progress of a couple of my WIPs, while still showing off my improvement in various areas of production (again, hopefully). Last year gave me good practice on writing original works, so I'm not worried about my ability to do that, except structure-wise, but hey, maybe I'll improve some more this year.

problem? /trollfaceplz
Response to: An AP Question Posted July 5th, 2012 in Audio

As a Mixcraft user for a few years, I can vouch for its suitability as a DAW (although admittedly not a very complex one). Never submitted "duplo" projects, never been banned. I didn't think it was a problem, so I'm relieved to read this thread.
