Gate Posted July 30th, 2013 in Audio

Can someone be so kind as to explain what a "gate" is (when referring to music production)? I've heard the term "noise gate" before, but I'm not sure if that's the same thing. The definition I've looked up confuses me, and I was wondering if the fine people here at Newgrounds could educate me.

Thanks!

Do I get bonus points for being able to quickly identify Malta on a map?

You'll have to ask Step.

Likewise. I expect that I will be nearing the end of the auditions by tonight, and perhaps earlier if I get off work on time.

They're all asleep right now, but the last update I had from Step was he was 3/4 done and was expecting to finish the last quarter tomorrow, so they'll be fine.

Thanks -- sounds good.

Just another quick count here, pending any errors; I've got 214.
Ha! I won't be making it!

Well, to get in, you'll have to (approximately) be in the top 25% of all entrants, assuming we get to 250ish auditions.

You never know...

That's the cool thing about NG music -- it's so relatable.

Can we get a tally of how many legit entries we have now? A couple of years ago, I think there were 32 selected from around 120 auditions. It'd be interesting to see if that ratio changes with the new rule of 64 being selected.

I import sounds from my keyboard most of the time, and I usually make them dry first so when I'm actually using them I can reverb how I like.

The front-to-back mixing with reverb idea is not my strong suit -- I have a tendency to put too much on a lot, so maybe I'll take a look at that too.

Oh yeah, forgot about that, but if I wanted each track to have its own unique reverb, then it would be as good as a send?

Quick Reverb Question Posted June 9th, 2013 in Audio

Alright, so I've heard the way to go with reverb is to set it up as a send effect, thereby keeping the original signal intact. This way you can add as much reverb as you want without changing the original sound itself.

However, the reverb VST I'm using right now has a "reverb gain" knob and a "dry gain" knob, alongside a "dry mute" button. Used as an insert effect, I can control dry/wet separately, achieving 100% dry or 100% wet if I need to.

Is this not also ideal? Am I missing something, or is this VST out of the ordinary? Potential problems later on?
