Early list because I leave Scotland tomorrow. 15 requests despite the earlier list - an active week!

Welcome to new/returning members.

Deleted a few words from the rules for sake of brevity. As usual, tell me if you think it was better before.

I have 2 small suggestions/questions regarding 'official' club business. Firstly, how about some 'form' of the rules for reviewers/requestors to be posted on the top of each page? Normally we only move about 1 page each week, but for more active weeks like last week, it might be nice to have a little thing to copy/paste to the top of each page, so those who click a link to the last page can quickly see what goes on here. I know I mentioned it a while back and there was some reason it never happened, but I can't remember what that reason was.

Secondly - how would you two review-list-maintainers (Shanus/Haggard) feel about raising the max.# of reviews in a permitted reccommendation? I really wanted to reccommend a game, since there's only one-ish on the list, but the ones I'd reccommend have over 30 reviews. Would 40 reviews make the list-making unmanagable?

At 6/21/08 10:09 AM, Haggard wrote:

I think it works really well, especially with Shanus or me reposting the list in the update posts. This gives us more time to do the reviews AND everything looks as always. So, I think it's a win-win situation. ^^

I remember you being a supporter of the idea back when, so it was little surprise to hear you say that.

Little_rena and others who originally disliked the idea - have you totally changed your minds, or do you still have quibbles?

Welcome! As already said, review the requests posted in the last list, then after reporting back to state how many points you've gotten, you'll be added to the next list.

Remember to actually give some specific constructive criticism - maybe say something you liked, state something you didn't, saying how it can be improved and also maybe give a summary of your overall opinion.

I'm not sure asking for reciprocal reviews after a 1-liner is polite.

Specifically for the Metal songs on my profile. *Hint, Hint*

Give us a few direct links before tonight and they'll be on the next list!

Sure thing! I'm sure you know the jig and also know that more reviewers are ALWAYS welcome.

That's the answer. Code on a frame is only run when the frame loads.

To have some code that runs ever frame, I personally make a shape off-stage, make it an mc then give it the code

onClipEvent(enterFrame){
  //put the score-checking code or anything else that should happen every frame here
}

Simple, but effective.

I still use the original AS though (still using Flash MX), so assuming you're more up-to-date than I, Coronus' method may be better.

When I saw it, I thought those faces were gonna be just incidental things - the character reacting when something around him happens.

If it's a key game mechanic and we need to be able to tell what 'personality' we currently are, maybe make them more distinguished? Like maybe have angry guy with a red face, bulging vein, worried guy with a raincloud above him... maybe content guy could have some rosy cheeks and add some sunshine around him?

Or at least exaggerate the faces and maybe poses a bit more?

Just an idea - if it's difficult to tell them apart at the scale they're being used, it could get annoying...

Make a dynamic text box with the variable of '_root.score'. (Make it dynamic and input the variable in the properties box)

Then on your main timeline initialise a variable of 'score'. ('var score = 0;')

Whenever your score should increase, add the code '_root.score+=10;', replacing the number with whatever it should increase by.

When the game restarts, have '_root.score=0;'

There's probably negligibly better ways to do it if you're using a more recent version of Flash, but that's what I'd do.

You'll want to wait until the list Shanus puts out on Sunday, then. You would have until he posts the list on Sunday night to finish this week's requests, but if you can't do anything until Monday, then just start off with the new list.
So pretty much I don't want to start yet right? So I'm really not a member yet. I will start reviewing from a list thats posted Sunday. Sounds good enough to me.

The list posted on Sunday would be a repost of the list I posted. As I wrote at the top, "Haggard or Shanus will probably tally the points for these reviews on the 29th/30th June.". So if you want to do a review today or tomorrow, do it from the list I posted. Literally the same.

OP, sounds like you' ve included some silence in your original song when you exported. Just trim the silence before exporting it from whatever music-making software you used!

In flash, it's a simple matter of opening the properties panel, where you can select the number of loops. Assuming you're already doing that, I suggest editing the mp3 itself.

// if he hits the wall he cant move

But if we can't move - then he can't ever move away from it! Walls shouldn't immobilise someone, just block their path.

What screen size do you use? Surely your browser should have at least 800px width?

And what about all the mouse-manipulation games? Having a bigger screen allows folk to add more to a single-screen level without making everything tiny and really difficult to touch or avoid.

What would you call a reasonable size?

Topic: What makes a good pre-loader game?

Posted: 06/19/08 06:37 AM

Forum: Flash

Thanks for the replies and suggestions, but I wasn't looking for specific suggestions. I've already got a few ideas of what the preloader game could be.

I was actually just looking for general qualities that make a good pre-loader game.

For example, I note that all pre-loader games seem be be a highscore-based thing with no 'winning' status. I guess that's because a highscore can appeal to the 'conqueror' in us and it lets more simple (=> lower filesize) toys entertain us for longer. Furthermore, with a winning objective folk could win, then be bored again whilst the other MBs load up.

Perhaps more notably, I've decided that shorter play-periods are better for a preloader game. i.e. it should be hard so we lose quickly.

I think Highscores become relevant only when we've got some mode for comparison and with a shorter game time, we can quickly have an attempt at improving our score. Also, I feel that the few pre-loader games I've played where I've been able to survive until the actual thing loads are almost like a failure - I want to quickly get to the point of near-misses and inevitible failure, before trying again. Surviving with ease while the feature loads - whilst better than a solo loading bar - isn't much better in my opinion.

Maybe we expect pre-loader games to be quick, so don't get too annoyed if we die within seconds.

Then again, maybe this depends on personalities? Do you guys have examples of pre-loader games that did frustrate you? Do you have something to add or disagree with something above?

Preloader games must meet different concerns than the full feature, and I was hoping to get discussion going about the general differences between a great game/great preloader game and also general discussion on what the qualities of a great preloader game are.

At 6/18/08 07:32 PM, Hexobolic wrote: optimize your flash

At 6/18/08 05:45 PM, SupaPeeves wrote: Something like this

Not really a game. Something I made :D

Are you really citing that as a good pre-loader game? It wouldn't keep me interested for longer than 30s or however long it took to realise that there was no interaction beyond controlling your avatar. I mean, even adding horizontally shooting shapes and a highscore would only take around a Kb yet pay dividends in keeping folk interested.

Topic: What makes a good pre-loader game?

Posted: 06/18/08 05:35 PM

Forum: Flash

I'm finally about to submit something big enough to merit making a pre-loader game for.

I wondered - what makes a good pre-loader game?

The rules must be simple of course - the game should perhaps be shallow and instantly gratifying so it doesn't require more time to have a laugh than the loading takes.

It must of course be small enough to load before any boredom sets in. But what size? At a guess, 100kb seems like the upper limit. Flash 5 had an option to check out how a file would play under a certain bandwidth, but I can't find the analogue in MX and that'd help decide.

Then other questions pop up - is it important for a pre-loader game to be thematically connected to the main feaure?

Should we avoid the pre-loader 'upstaging' the main feature - is it a failure if the pre-loader is as enjoyable as the main event?

Tell me your thoughts on what makes for a great pre-loader game.

Conceptually, if you're storying everything as a 2D array, can't you just check each column after pulling stuff with 'gravity'?

for(n=0, n<number of columns, n++){
for(m=0, m<height of column, m++){
//if this bit is NOT empty
{
columnIsEmpty=false;
break();
}
}
if(columnIsEmpty){
go through the fields of the previous column, deleting them and pasting to this column;
}

Something like that?

It's an attempt to get more contributors from outside Scotland. I'd love for everyone interested to start submitting stuff!

If so, is there a specific background colour to be used? for the wires too?,

No palette guidelines. Originally, I suggested the bg be 'black or a very dark colour', but experiments and feedback, I decided that having varied background colours works well, letting folk express themselves further. As long as the positioning is kept EXACT, wires will seem to flow, even if they're changing colour.

The wires, plugs/adaptors and sizing connect it enough, visually.

How do we know where to place the points where the wires join up to the pic?

Download the .tif I linked to in the first post. It should make it all clear.

Wires should be 5mm thick at the point they enter/exit and should be 165mm from one corner and 80mm from the other. If using outlines in your style, maybe don't count the outlines as part of the 5mm width guideline.

Only thing I could say is that the arms don't look 'right'. I mean, you've got the tiny torso, which is fair enough, but then the arms feel like they should be smaller too. Since they aren't, it kinda looks to me like his hands are floating.

Also, you need to do his tats! They're a distinguishing feature!
