I dunno why they're hated in games, because I don't make games, but the problem I have is that when you're making a flash movie, streaming sounds can't pass through scenes, so it's impossible to sync anything to audio properly. It is virtually impossible to make a music video.
Enh. Yeah - I wouldn't bother splitting a bgm into two for the purpose of using two scenes.
But even despite the sound not streaming across both, another scene can be used for the pre-loader/menu then one for the actual music vid.
I find even that level of separation useful.
And taking away movies with one long bgm still leaves the vast majority. Why not use a new scene when the bgm changes if you feel like it?
Sure, it's no panacea and not without problems. But then mcs and graphic symbols both have their advantages and disadvantages - same with organising a movie/game on one scene or splitting it up. Nothing can be used in 100% of cases, but that doesn't mean it should be hated or avoided when it can actually serve a purpose.
Is there some drawback other than the fact that sounds can't stream across that I'm missing?
