Topic: Writers Guild Strike

Posted: 11/23/07 02:50 AM

Forum: NG News

I am a big Howard Stern fan, and the other day he had Greg Fitzsimmons (comedian and member of the Writer's Guild" on the show. He went into some detail about the troubles that the writers have faced getting Hollywood to treat them with the same respect that other contributors of the entertainment industry are treated with. Basically, the writers are not being properly compensated for the work they are providing - which in my mind really devalues a lot of entertainment media on the whole. Cost of living in Hollywood is pretty damn high. While to the average joe their paychecks might seem damn impressive, but in reality a lot of them have trouble just getting by. And consider how often new shows are cancelled. You could really call a lot of them seasonal employees.

So, what do we as Newgrounders and fans do to show support? That is tough. Can't really buy more DVDs, since the money doesn't funnel to them. Can't really watch more TV shows, because eventually everything is going to go into perma-rerun and will benefit only the sponsors.

Things are going to get dire real, real quick.

A collab might be a good way to raise awareness and maybe even morale. As for a theme, that might be tough. NG is known for over the top violence, so maybe a stick collab where Hollywood brass are fed their organs? Or maybe the sentient fish rapist can visit the studio mogals as they count their money.

Or maybe a collab showcasing a world where all of the real writers are long gone, and TV is WAAAYYY past shitty. Every contributor could do a mini "pilot" for a horrible show, like one about a guy who pastes Handi-Snacks on his chest and recites Metallica lyrics. Or one where three blind kids learn to skateboard and save the world from land-walking sharks. Those sound really shitty.

Anyway, there's my two cents.

Man, that really scraped up some memories. Good old Ivan, you can't beat him for an epic villan. That game was God damned fun. I loved unlocking the characters. It was cruel fun. Reccomended it to all of my friends!

Rocky 6 was effin epic. Please see it!

Oh yeah!! Don't know if you'll even know wtf I'm talking about here. I did a piece on that Golgo 13 sex powerup back in the effin' ninties. I know someone on your site did one 95% similar. It's a total coincidence, but if you're epic bored, mail me and I'll mail you the htmls. They are SCARY similar.

Peace, happy 2007!!!

I drive by this old drive-in theater every morning on my way to work. I was pretty stunned to see that someone scaled the huge 60-foot tall marquee and delivered this special message to all passerby. Please note that it is located on an extremley busy street... even at night.

Owned.

It had pretty cool game mechanics. Although like a lot of stuff Nintendo makes, however, it did feel a little "gimmicky" after a while.

But, Nintendo still kicks ass and I bought their fine Nintendo DS.

Satriani is great, I would have picked him as my choice but I prefer Vai most of the time.

Vai completley owns, too. I lov3 Fire Garden and Passion and Warfare. Great stuff.

There are shitloads of guys who can sling out technical riffs like there's no tommorow. Take Malmsteen, for example. The man is a fuckin' machine. Or Vai, (one of my faves) who once transcribed music for Frank Zappa. Vai can lash out licks fast and completely accurate. He's a Fuckin' Genius. Frank Zappa wasn't too bad either. Sloppy, but the man had tons of soul and wrote some of the most technical and bizzare music ever written. He's definately one of the best and prolific composers of our time. But for my money? And this is comming from a guitarist of 10 years...

Joe Satriani. He may not be the fastest, true. His chops may be outclassed by more technical players (Like Eric Johnson), but he plays with emotion. Listen to Flying in a Blue Dream with the lights out and you can feel that his guitar is speaking to you. I'm serious. Satch can channel himself into the instrument like no other musician I have ever seen. I have been to two of his concerts. I must tell you, if you ever get the opportunity to see this man preform, do so. If you love the instrument of guitar, you owe it to yourself to see this unsung hero perform.

I love guitar, and I admire many of the guitarists mentioned in this thread (Tom Morrelo ROX!!!), but Satch understands guitar like nobody else.

I lost my cat almost 2 years ago. She had her from a small kitten, and after about a year we got her spayed. After she was spayed, there was something not quite right with her. She was unusually lethargic and was badly jaundiced. A trip to the vet revealed that she had contracted FIP, which is 100% deadly in cats. She lived for a few months an sterriods and amoxyicillan, but it was getting to the point where she could hardly meow anymore. She would open her mouth and nothing would come out. Finally when we got her put to sleep, my wife and I cried for a couple of days. It was the saddest thing I've ever been though and it made me realize how much more difficult it would be to lose a loved one.

So, Ozcar, I can really relate to your pain. It hurts a lot, but it will get better.

Rest in peace Pingo.

Take care Paisano.

Helado helps, if you're into that.

I had a buddy who had one of those things... He had about a half dozen games for it, too. The only ones I remember was that boxing game and Mario pays his car insurance bill. Alright, that probably wasn't the name of it, but heck, who remembers anyway? What a piece of crap that thing was!

Rumor has it that the asprin companies payed Nintendo to develop it so people would become addicted to their anti-headache medicines. I had an opportunity to buy one years ago for 20 American, but I opted to buy a bag of month old bratwurst.

Calvin and Hobbes... such a great strip. Ever notice how you never saw a C&H video game or T-Shirt? That's because Bill Watterson never allowed ANY merchandise to be licensed (save for the books). So, any piece of C&H merchandise you've ever seen is bootlegged. It's really interesting to read about Bill Watterson... he's extremely reclusive and there are only one or two know photos of him.

Well, If you were to buy a very large number of stickers (in the 1000's), Im sure you could fashion some sort of formal atire out of them. Like, some sort of tuxedo or perhaps a sporty lesuire suit.
