These look AWESOME!

The jam thread is here.

Time to Jam! Declare the screenshot you're basing your game on, your team roster, and team name (purely for keeping track of everyone) in this thread.

You can find most of the screenshots here. I believe that a few unscouted authors posted theirs in the art discussion thread.

There are no dibs being called on screenshots, any two teams can do the same screenshot. Declaring your screenshot here will just let everyone else know who is doing what. Obviously you probably wouldn't want to pick a certain screenshot if two other teams said they're doing that one.

This thread is also open for Game Jam discussion. Remember this is a community effort, so post yo progress!

For me, learning the art of the gesture made a huge improvement in my work. Also, this is a neat website I got from my friend for quick figure drawing (doesn't beat the challenge from life, but it's still great practice.)

All these games look really good! This might be the best Game Jam yet.

Here is a new thread to post your finished games!

Game Jam 7: Finished Games Posted July 1st, 2012 in Game Development

Post your finished games for the Game Jam 7 here!

Please post them in the following format:

Your Team Name
Your team's core mechanic

The link to your submission.

Also, don't forget to tag your game with "nggamejam7" and place a link to the Game Jam 7 collection in your game. You should also include your core mechanic diagram somewhere in your game, it'll be fun for us to see what you're line of thinking was.

Thanks and good luck! Even if you finish late, go ahead and tag your game and post it here so we can play them.

Those other layers are influenced directly by the core mechanic. Basically, just make a game based on that core mechanic and see what fun stuff you can turn the other layers into. It's like a design exercise.

Dang.

Yeah, you guys can change your name once you get your teams together. We just used the current names to assign the mechanics.

NEWGROUNDS GAME JAM 7
Once every few months, or so, the planets become aligned, and cosmic heroes of many talents travel across the world to do battle in the field of mighty game development.

Come on, can you feel it? The Spirit of the Newgrounds Game Jam 7 is here!

RELEASE THE THEME
The Theme: Designing Around a Core Mechanic.

+ Each team will be given two core mechanics (pick one). These are the platform for your game, and without them your game should be unplayable.
+ Teams must design their games around this core mechanic using the diagram attached below. (Make a diagram similar to that one and place it somewhere in your game, like in the preloader or on the menu.)
+ The secondary mechanic layer is what you use your core mechanic to accomplish. If your core mechanic is drive, you might make your secondary mechanic to race.
+ The progression layer is the source of change brought on by the mechanics. It is how the game creates a beginning, middle and end.
+ Finally the outer narrative layer puts all the inner layers into context. It develops the story and fleshes out characters and motives.

If you're confused here are examples of Mario and Portal illustrated with the core mechanic diagram.

Few people make it anywhere as an "idea guy." If you're really serious about making this game, go check out a book on AS3 and do your best. When you're developing games you're going to have to learn to wear many hats, so to speak.

Response to: Game Jam 7: Team Picks Round 2 Posted June 28th, 2012 in Game Development

From my experience, it's always nice to have an extra artist around to help out with background art, menu art, additional polish, etc. Worst case scenario is you have an extra hand that does minimal artwork.

This should be the updated list of all the people who haven't been picked yet! Remember, your additional picks still allow you 1 artist, 1 musician, and 1 wildcard (although there is only one now).
