I'm playing Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Did you know that Lightning can be frickin' hot? 'Cuz she can.

But alas that would both derail this thread and give it more attention than it deserves so maybe another time.
I also defend FF13 as being a decent game despite all the hate towards it, but again another time.
The problem with FFXIII is that it gets overhyped in both directions, much like eggplant. You either love it or hate it - those who find middle ground are a small population.
The biggest gripe I have with FFXIII? It's not the story (which, is actually pretty good), or the battle system (I consider it the best FF battle system I've yet seen), or the music (Hamauzu did a great job, especially with Blinded by Light and Saber's Edge), but the level design. It's long narrow hallways through about 75%-80% of the whole game. The argument, 'well, the point of the game is that you don't really have any free will and are being guided by the Fal'cie' does not excuse this or make it go away somehow - it's super lazy level design. I'm a noob at game development, but I'm sure I of all people could do better than long narrow hallways.
Anyways, Final Fantasy VI is not a game I would look down upon someone for liking. It's got a great story, excellent graphics, some fair music. Then, there's the opera scene...
But, the game falls flat to me because it dosen't feel like one. The story isn't so strong that you can ignore the fact that you have close to zero customization ability (Final Fantasy IV did this really well, despite having actually no customization, period.) By the time I got the first few Magicite shards, it was too little and far too time-intensive - Magicite is buried behind two or three levels and swapping them was more time consuming than the actual battles.
If Square had just dropped the Magicite system altogether and had some other way of causing characters to gain magic abilities, I would have more positives to say about the gameplay. Fortunately, Kefka is the villain. He redeems the experience sufficiently such that all my gripes about the game are nullified. I consider him the second best villain in FF history, next to Caius Ballad.

I want to be able to make platform games such as Pokemon or Golden sun. The problem is I have no idea where to start. what programs/script do you use? what are some good resources to pick up right away? Good tutorials that can point me in the right direction? If you could help a noob out that would be awesome! Im very confident I can make game sprites and worlds I just don't know how to program such games. Thank you for taking the time to look at this topic and any suggestions would be great (once again if this topic is in the wrong place please let me know).
The starting point for making a game, is not for creating a complex game.
I suggest starting by creating a Flappy Birds clone, since that seems to be the thing du jour. It's an extremely simple game in that you have a few key things:
1 - A title screen.
2 - A core mechanic (touch the screen to raise the character)
3 - A loss condition (hit the pipes/obstacles)
In the process of attaining even this simple goal, you'll have to
1 - Learn to create assets
2 - Learn to write code to control these assets
3 - Playtest, so that it feels right
4 - Actually release your project, or what was the point?
Fortunately, due to the vast number of clones out there, this is a problem that has already been solved for you; at this point, simply searching for open-source code for a Flappy game should give you some code with which to get started.
From there, it's your job to evolve your style and skills to the point where you create what you want to create. It's not easy, and it'll take some time. Are you willing to put in the time and effort?

Scotland are wanting independence, get a unified economy, what!? What freaking difference does it make? National pride? Then they can pay for themselves too, that's pride.
Is there a large amount of Texans actually taking this seriously?
Speaking as a Texan - from Austin, no less - most Texans actually laugh at this idea because it's really not all that feasible. Sure we have a lot of land area, and sure we have a lot of industry, but the level of Texas' economy does not displace the simple fact that our state isn't so prosperous that it's as self-sufficent as a smaller nation (e.g. France, which is about the size of Texas.)
Cute sentiment...but, ultimtately worthless.

If Iran can get a warship to float in the air, then we're all screwed because real life has turned into a Final Fantasy game. :(
In all seriousness, though, I agree it means little. Who knows, maybe their commander will let them take shore leave so we can show them all the things they're missing, like reruns of Jersey Shore.
Oboe (about 13 years), Piccolo/Flute (5 years), Piano (it's awful, so it sounds like a negative time span), voice (it sounds worse, so now we're talking imaginary numbers), laptop (8 years, via Anvil Studio and Synthfont)

Have you ever not showered for more than 3 days? why would you do that?
You wake up one afternoon on a small tropical island with no food, clothes, shelter, technology, or other people. The sun is about to set, and the island seems to have plenty of other creatures inhabiting it, some of which might be dangerous. What is the FIRST thing you would do? Be specific.
Given that it's a tropical island, it's likely to have A) wood, B) rocks, and C) sand. So, I find a rock and some wood, and create a crude spear. I pick up a handful of sand, find a creature, and throw the sand in the creatures eyes so I can skewer it. I then use any leftover wood and the stone(s) to strike a campfire. From there, things get pretty predictable.
To the person below: does the set of all sets that contain themselves contain itself?

Alternatively, spending it alone is a good reason to get out and go a-lookin'. Fortunately, females outnumber males, so there is a pretty strong chance of finding a single lady at any given time.
It's just finding the right lady that's the tough part...
Congrats to the winners! And, the new layout looks pretty slick. Nicely done guys!
And, I'll keep angling to get a game of mine in one of those top spots in coming months! Muahaha!!one!!eleventy!1!!one!

I like DotA2's ability to 'deny' minion kills to your opponent - that seems like an interesting mechanic that makes laning a totally different beast. If LoL had that, it'd be a way different experience...but, I also like LoL's (relative) simplicity.

Hey Bren, noticed that it was fixed. Thanks for getting my game back up and running!

The way I've heard it, the first ten will be shit - that seems to be the agreed-on number among every game developer I've ever spoken to.
I'm on completed game #3 (lots of prototypes died on the way to that), so I've still got seven crap games to go before I start to write games that are actually somewhat good...roughly...

It's hard to watch and not just because of the poor editing choices. That's when I threw up my hands and said, “F**k this S**t.”
Its really not hard to find examples of misogyny in video games culture. I usually don't mind a little but when it defines the industry then something needs to be done.
So I am going to try to do my part. I'd like to try my hand at helping to create video games. I'm not going to change the world but at least I will be doing something other than complaining about how unfair things are. Its easy to judge hard to create.
So I came here. Newgrounds is known for amateur and underground games. So there must be people looking for talent to help them create their own games. But I am not sure where to start.
How do I find people who are looking for amateur talent?
How do I get people to find me?
Should I make a portfolio with my work or just throw random stuff I've done. And what should I put into it?
What should I expect from working on a game here?
Things like this and so on....
(Quick thing about my talents)
I have studied comics and even gotten a degree in Sequential art, so I am sort of a jack of all trades. I know character design, how to draw backgrounds, story boarding, and a little scripting and witting although I have no idea how a video game scrip looks like. For computers I know photoshop and a little Illustrator.
Kittykaboom, easily the best way to start is to create something of your own.
Unity is a great engine, and you can start by making some small, casual games to build up your portfolio and your knowledge of game development/design. You don't seem to have the programming background, but there's ways around that, such as graphical programming interfaces like Playmaker, and pre-built kits that you can skin/modify to get a handle on things.
You're right that if you don't contribute, you can't change anything! And, I think that even though the industry has made significant strides in its inclusion of women, we've got a ways to go. I can't wait to see what you make. :)
I uploaded a new Unity game two days ago, The Hero's Journey. It was working just fine until about noon, when I noticed that the iFrame had stopped working.
I usually use Chrome, and after a forums search, I noticed someone said 'don't use Chrome', so I switched to IE11, hoping that would work; it did not. I went into my game's settings here, and made sure 'Requires Unity Webplayer' was checked.
Yet, the iFrame is still not working for me on any browser. I didn't change anything, so what broke how my game is presented?
(Also: am I the only one who can't see/play it?)
Kaizo Mario World...where the Kaizo Trap got its name from.
Evil, evil game...
I like LoL, because I'm more familiar with it...but also because they've done some fairly good work with cleaning up the community, or at least keeping the true jerks in their own little ball of gloom...somewhere.
