sad !

Response to: How to start a sketch? Posted April 16th, 2011 in Art

I used to scan my drawings but i've been painting more recently and see everything as chunks of color (shapes) instead of lines. The first thing I do is remove the lame white of the canvas. I fill it with a mid-tone color that allows you to work with lighting and shadows. On a new layer i then try to create random shapes as loosely as possible. Unless you have a precise concept in mind, try to be as unprecise as possible ( not looking at the screen while you're doing it works well). Your brain will then start to interpret the shape you created as more figurative forms (character, machine, weapon, etc).

That's how I work but maybe that workflow won't fit with your style !

Good luck !

The sketch itself is actually great ! Try playing with the line opacity and thickness to give it more depth. Keep it up ! GOod job !

Response to: I would really like some critique. Posted April 16th, 2011 in Art

When you work with black and white only (no grey tones) it's extremely important to use various lines width. Use thicker lines to outline objects or elements that are closer and use thinner lines for details.

Also have a good balance of black masses and white masses. Look at some comic art and you'll learn a lot. Having great black and white artwork takes a lot of time to master and is harder than using colors and grey values. Good luck and keep it up !!!!

In order to achieve great sur-realism you need to master realism first. Practice drawing simple objects realisticly, understand the principles of lighting, shading, perspective and depth. Once you understand those concepts, you'll be able to tweak them at your ease to create your own style.

You're on the right path though. Keep on practicing...draw every day and you'll achieve your goal quickly :D

Well it helps you to get a focus point on your image. Some use stronger light to get the attention of the viewers on a specific spot, some use more details, some use more vivid colors. There are tons of ways to build a focus point on an image. Usually I use stronger light or stronger shadows but wanted to try something different. Not sure it worked well since the legs lack lots of detailing

I really like that dragon sketch so decided to color it. It's not extremely detailed everywhere but I read that it should be avoided to detail an image the same way all around. If you detail a specific area more it'll create an interest point which is what i was going for

so what's up with the resuluts ?

Response to: Asskiller's sketchbook ! Posted September 20th, 2010 in Art

The initial shape is made out of random shapes and doodling. I've heard about Al Chemy and it's awesome !

Response to: Asskiller's sketchbook ! Posted September 20th, 2010 in Art

Yeah...i generally use a new layer for the lines based on the first shape i make. Once i'm satisfied with the overall look i merge the layers, lock the transparency and start doing my light and shades !
