Flood The Portal Friday! Reflection Posted March 18th, 2012 in Art

stealin' most'a toas' post'a again'a!

On the first Friday of every month, the Art Forum has a special event called "FLOOD THE PORTAL FRIDAY", yup!

What's Flood the Portal Friday, you ask?
The idea is to 'swamp' the art portal with the same thumbnail, with pics based on the same theme, right at the same time. This is not a competition, it's just a bit of dumb fun.

If you're still unclear about what it's about, check out the previous months (links at the bottom).

This is the Art Forum, so there must be Guidelines, right?
- Right! Make sure the thumbnail of your pic is EXACTLY the one shown below. Don't make it blue, don't flip it, don't change the text, don't do anything! That's meant to be the icon that will Flood the Portal! You can change or remove it later on... just keep in mind that it will ruin the tag search if you do :P
- You can either work the thumbnail into the pic, or just dump it in the corner, whatever you want.
- Try not to upload it early (or it may be removed). It's gotta be a FLOOD of pics on that FRIDAY! If you can't make it at the precise submission time, you can always add it later.
- Another perk of participation is the guaranteed views, and hopefully reviews! The more we help each other out by giving constructive feedback, the better. So try to leave a comment on at least one other flood piece... or if you're up for the challenge, review them all! Hopefully others will do the same! (HUGE thanks to those of you who do this!!!)
- If you are unscouted, this is a good opportunity to get some exposure and feedback/tips. Just submit a link to your finished piece here. Who knows, you might just get a scout invite out of the deal!
- Also... WIPs are welcome and encouraged!!

What's the Theme already?!
The theme for the 13th flood should probably have something to do with luck, but it doesn't.
Nope, the theme is REFLECTION!!
It can be as literal or loosely interpreted as you want, so long as you include the thumbnail posted below and tag your submissions with "ftpf13" so we can search for them in the future.

The 13th flood will happen on FRIDAY, APRIL 6TH AT 6PM NEWGROUNDS TIME.

Have fun!!

Art Review Request Thread!! Posted March 7th, 2012 in Art

As some of you know, getting helpful reviews on art submitted to the portal isn't an easy thing to come by. One of the reasons is that you never know who really wants a true critique and who just wants ego-stroking praise. That's where this thread comes in.

This isn't a club or crew. You don't need to be a member. Any and everyone is welcome. The main objective is to give and get honest critiques/comments/suggestions for IMPROVEMENT.

By posting in this thread you are accepting the fact that people may be harsh. This doesn't mean reviewers have a license to be cruel and insensitive. Art can be a very personal thing, so please remember that and try to stay positive. As always, if you receive (or come across) any reviews that are abusive, please flag them or contact a mod.

To make sure things run smoothly, we obviously need some "guidelines"!

that are being stolen from the review request crew! Thanks guys! ;D

- Post a direct link to the submission(s) you want reviewed. (See instructions below.)
- Make no more than 3 requests within one week.
- Please respond to reviews. Reviewers like to know if their comments are helpful (and someday it may help stats).
- Be patient. People review your work out of courtesy, at their own pace. It's not their job. (Thank you's are nice too.)
- Do NOT request without posting a link, be kind, reviewers are not robots.
- Do NOT just say "Review everything" or just link to your profile.
- Do NOT request reviews for the same submission more than once.
- Do NOT get defensive or rude if you disagree with a review.

To post a direct link to you submission, copy/paste the url on a line by itself.
Example:
http://www.newgrounds.com/art/view/i-bot/nice-fire
It should displays like this:

  • Nice Fire
    Nice Fire by I-Bot

Just some drawing in a notebook.

    Score
    / 5.00
    Type
    Illustration
    Popularity
    19,683 Views
    Rated
    Everyone

Note: If you want suggestions/opinions on a piece WHILE you're working on it, please make a WIP thread for it or post it in your personal art thread if you have one!!

also... why isn't this in c&c, you ask?! Because none of us will see it there! ;)

Let the requests begin!

===IMPORTANT STUFF===
The theme for the 12th flood is taken from an inspirational post by tom fulp:
"It's like leapfrog; you take a leap and end up at the front, but ultimately you will end up at the back, until you leap again."
...and the theme is FROGS!!
It can be as literal or loosely interpreted as you want, so long as you include the thumbnail and tag.

Tag your submission(s) with "ftpf12", so we can look back at them in the future.

The 12th flood will begin on the 2ND OF MARCH AT 6PM NEWGROUNDS TIME,
and the thumbnail can be downloaded here.

Have fun!!

Try this one, too.
Same collection of programs, except this list is slightly more up-to-date.

If you've played about with SUMO Paint, try Paint.net or Gimp.

In that situation, it wouldnt be considered an actual party. Thus it can not be a party foul.

Thanks to everyone who volunteered for the big job of organizing our lazy asses. We found someone to do the job. They know who they are and that's all that matters.

Remember we are always open to suggestions so don't be afraid to shoot us a PM or comment in the news posts about which tutorials you want. The more people demanding something the faster we will try to produce it.

Response to: Art Forum Lounge Posted January 6th, 2010 in Art

Hi guys (and gals), got a favor to ask of you.

We are looking for a willing art forum regular to join our team to help maintain some of the pages. You wont be doing tutorials, all you will mostly be doing is keeping the helpful forum links and User Art Pages up to date, so don't worry about your skill as an artist. Currently the user who used to maintain those pages has been busy as has the rest of the team (which is why we haven't really submitted anything new for a while).

So if you are interested just say so here or in a PM and we will interview you and see if you fit the job.

DON'T ASK if you aren't willing to do the job naturally, but also if you aren't an active art forum reg don't apply either, we need someone who really knows their way around the forum and wont need to be held by the hand when it comes to finding threads or knowing what to put in.

Look at the tutorial again, try doing it with just a pencil and paper first before moving to a tablet so that pressure and layers don't become the problem. Also take into account the outlines, shading to a degree than you can remove or minimize an outline will make an object seem more three dimensional. You got the basic gist of the shading, but you are ending it too early in the piece. Darkening it doesn't help when the shading doesnt reach the parts of the objects that its supposed to.

Actually they wont be, without going too much into light physics shadows are very rarely completely parallel, if at all. You would need incredibly ideal situations for this phenomena to happen. For the sake of most drawings making shadows all perfectly parallel will suffice, but if you want realism you are better off really observing the way each one moves. There will be subtle differences but they are there (especially in sunlight)

A bunch of content has been added in the last few days in my account. Here's the list of what we have so far and what we're planning on adding in the near future.

Response to: [art101] Critiquing Thread Posted April 25th, 2009 in Art

It seems like this thread is slow because people might be afraid of the 4th rule.
"4. In order to stop picture spamming, you must critique a piece if you are going to post a picture. Also no posting two of your own pictures in a row. Wait till your picture gets critiqued before posting a new one."
So we have decided that as long as all presented pictures have been given a critique its only fair that you should all be allowed to post one without giving one. Rule #4 is loosely enforced. Really the only time you will have trouble with it is if you just start spamming pictures like crazy.

Response to: [Art101] Critiquing Posted March 26th, 2009 in Art

This thread failed, sadly we weren't very specific with how critiques should be done, instead it became a big image dump and crap fest.

The critique tutorial has been updated.

Also a new threadhas been posted, make sure you read the first post carefully.

Hopefully that one wont suffer the same fate as this one.

[art101] Critiquing Thread Posted March 26th, 2009 in Art

READ THIS FIRST!!!

RULES

1. This is not an image dump or your personal showcase. Only post work that you are looking for honest feedback on how you can improve.

2.Posts are to be limited to posting pictures for critiques, and critiquing pictures. DO NOT ARGUE! You are allowed to reply to people who commented on your work, but try to only do so if they misunderstood something in the work, or asked a question.

3. If you are posting work make sure you list the following. Put 'N/A' if your piece does not apply to one of them.
SIZE (pixels or inches or something similar)
MEDIUM (what you made it with)
TIME SPENT (approximately)
Failure to put any of those will result in your post being deleted, re-post it with them if that happens.

4. In order to stop picture spamming, you must critique a piece if you are going to post a picture. Also no posting two of your own pictures in a row. Wait till your picture gets critiqued before posting a new one.

5. If you are responding to a picture, you must do a "Reply with quote" and have some of their original post so that people know which piece you are responding too easily.

6. Saying you agree with a critique that another user has given, or mentioning things that have been said is acceptable, as long as you also provide some input of your own that is different. If you have nothing new to say, then the piece is most likely finished being critiqued. (HINT Quickly scroll through the pages and see what people who responded to the piece have already said)

7.While you don't need to post everything that was in the tutorial, if we feel you haven't even read it, your post will be deleted.

Now for an example

For this piece the artist was making a still life of cardboard objects, with directional light. He was trying for an accurate drawing as far as shading values and object relations go. He also wanted a convincing perspective drawing, but it wasn't the main focus. He was going for a realistic style, but not necessarily photo-realism or a completely polished look, the somewhat sketch like quality was intentional. He knows that the paper could be cleaned up because there are lots of smudges.
Size - 18 x 24 in.
Medium - Charcoal, white conté
Time - 1.5 hours

[art101] Critiquing Thread

[Art101] Critiquing Posted March 16th, 2009 in Art

This thread is dedicated to critiquing pictures. If you want to know if your drawing is good or not, or what you could work on. Post it here.

Rules

1. You must state your intent when you post a picture, what are you aiming for? Anime, hyper-realism, Abstract, shading, anatomy? Let us know what you're trying to accomplish.

2. All posts must be constructive criticism. "That's awesome" or "That sucks" are NOT critiques, point out exactly what they can improve on and how they might accomplish this. Any posts that are not constructive will be deleted.

3. If someone points out something wrong about your drawing, and it upsets you, keep it to yourself. Take the critique for what it is, and use it to improve your drawing. We don't need 50 posts of you defending your drawing. They will be deleted.

With all this in mind lets kick off the thread, this artist is trying to work on their proportions and basic shading, what do you suggest they work on? Remember, be constructive.

[Art101] Shading/Contrast Help Posted February 24th, 2009 in Art

POST ONLY REQUESTS FOR HELP, RESPONSES TO HELP, OR PICS OF THE EXERCISES IN THIS THREAD!
This thread is to be used with the Shading/Contrast tutorial.
If you need help with the shading on a piece post here. Do not come here for critiques on finished pieces unless its because you feel the shading needs work. This thread is to get help with pieces that you are having trouble shading. PiecesDO NOTneed to be limited to the shapes and techniques discussed in the tutorial, but DO need to be relevant to shading.
For other tutorials, click here.
There will also be exercises to give you a chance to test out what you have learned in the tutorial.

Lets start out with one of the exercises.
Exercise #1
Shade this set up using what you learned in the tutorial. You can use any shading technique and put the light source where ever you want. If you want to do it free hand, just draw the set up yourself, or print out a copy and draw on that.
