No. I made the pass system hard to crack for a REASON. Buy potions if you need healing.

This is on hold for now; too much schoolwork.

What, there's *5* attacks - dash attack, jump attack, and a 3 hit combo if you time it right... which I left out of the "Controls". Damn.

Beats the colored boxes I used originally; it's supposed to be crap at this point, something quick that says 'yep, he's attacking', and such. I reiterate that I can't draw. And I wasn't going to release a demo originally, period; I basically cut out a lot to make this. I'm paranoid, what can I say.

Hi all,

I’m looking for an artist to help me with the first level of my next major game, BattleMage II. Some of you may have played the original BM; the story picks up where the last left off, but the style has changed to an isometric side-scrolling fighter similar to Double Dragon. I was playing with the idea, and after some experimentation it works well. Not sure if I'll go back to the original style for BM3 yet *shrug* But on to the matter at hand...

THE GAME IS PROGRAMMED – But I’m keeping it largely under wraps except for the artist I choose. Sorry. At the moment all that’s there is mostly Zero sprites on a crappy background – which is where you come in!

Here is a small demo of the game, so you can get a feel for it: not a lot in the demo, but it works as a good example.
DEMO

I’M LOOKING FOR AN ARTIST TO HELP, BUT I WANT TO TRY AND FINISH BY 3/31. I understand that’s soon, so I want to move quickly on this. If you are interested, please respond within a few days. I enter my games in AG contests, and sometimes AG gives additional incentives, as well. If the game shows extreme promise and/or we miss the deadline of the end of the month, I can try to work something out with AG for some kind of compensation. As always with me, any money that comes from this game is split with the artist 50/50.

HOW TO ENTER:
Draw Josh Haseman (the main character) in this pose, at DOUBLE this size:
http://uhaweb.hartfo..du/mahar/z_stand.png

(Make it something you can repeat – this is frame animation, so if chosen you will need to do around 50 frames with this artwork; Haseman needs the most art by far.)

Here is a collage of screenshots of Josh from BattleMage 1 (my own art, please, do better than me, lol).
http://uhaweb.hartfo..ar/BM_JH_Samples.jpg

To note: Josh is now Lord Commander of the BattleMages, so a cooler weapon and armor is always a plus.

Entries can be emailed to me at cmahar (at) hotmail (dot) com. Questions can be either emailed or posted here.

FYI: The last time I made a post like this was for my V-Day game, Cupid’s Adventure. It was simple, but made front page. I expect this to do well, also, if the art is good enough.

COMPLETE LIST – So you know what you’re getting in to…

--Josh:
Standing
Walking anim
Jumping anim
Charging anim
3 different attack anims
Sheathing blade anim
Charge attack anim
Jump attack anim
Wounded anim
Death anim
--Orcs (2 different types, one more armored than the other):
Walking anim
1 attack anim
Wounded anim
Knocked down anim
Death anim
--Large Orc Boss:
Walking anim
Charging anim
Wounded anim
Death anim
--Castle Hallway - isometric background (to specs)
--Several artistic stills for intro/ending storyline
--Game Over still

Topic: "_droptarget" question

Posted: 02/17/06 10:32 AM

Forum: Flash

I have a question about sort of an 'unconventional' use of the _droptarget feature. _droptarget detects if an object his over another object, when dragged, but does it also work if the object is not dragged? I mean, could it be used as a type of hit detection?

Say I had a person with an invisible block on each side. Could I do a _droptarget on the bottom one to see if he's touching the ground? I'm having issues with hit detection on more complex shapes and thought that this might be an easy fix.

Is there another way I'm not seeing?

Thanks.

Topic: NG Slogan

Posted: 02/15/06 06:58 PM

Forum: NG News

Love the slogan, and I agree; it's a lot more topical now than ever. NewGrounds really is *the* source for new, interesting material by designers of all ages. This is a great way to get your material seen; my last game had 100K views just here on NG! That number floors me, to get so much exposure really makes this whole place worthwhile for everyone, not just those having fun and making something silly, but those who are really trying to break out and get noticed, to get a job, to get heard.

I was a teen when I first found NewGrounds, and it appealed to me. Now I'm an adult, about to graduate college and look for a job I can love, and NG is still there, in a different, more meaningful way. Because of this site, I've been given job offers to do something I've always wanted to do; make programs that people enjoy. If I get one person to say 'dood, you r0x0r, that was l33t', well, that makes my day (and makes my formalistic english mind cringe). The new slogan fits so well with what NewGrounds has become, so far from its porn-fueled days of yore. "Everything, by Everyone." So simple, so true, so... right. It's the way I view NG, the way I've understood it to be for a long time now. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Keep up the good work, Tom; this place changes people's futures. It's changed mine. Thank you.

Topic: Flash Artist For Armorgames Entry

Posted: 01/21/06 04:41 PM

Forum: Flash

Hi all,

Some of you may have seen BattleMage, my latest submission for Armor Games (www.armorgames.com). One of the biggest complaints was my artwork, which I anticipated; I'm a programmer, not an artist.

THE BASIC IDEA

While I will be holding a 'contest' for an artist for BattleMage II in the semi-near future, this 'contest' involves a fairly simple game I've made for Valentine's Day.

The game itself is 90% finished, and additions may be made based on the artist's ability and willingness. There are certainly possibilities for expansion that have been suggested to me. I'm keeping the basic gameplay idea under wraps for now, but any artists with decent submissions who want more info will get their questions answered. I just don't want to explain in detail the entire game scheme.

Essentially, I need around 6-10 pieces of *original* artwork in Flash that can be used to replace the simple shapes I am using now, and to add backgrounds, etc.

THE PERKS

The artist who 'wins', and helps me with the artwork, will recieve 50% of any cash or prizes resulting from the entry. Obviously, they will be credited for the work as well.

THE CONTEST

Draw an overhead view of a Cupid, limits are 32x32 pixels. A still shot is fine, but unerstand the wings will have to be animated for the actual game. Image MUST be original artwork by the artist. Simply post your image, or a link to it, here in this thread.

The timeframe is 2 weeks, but I will probably review and choose someone within 1 because of time issues (game must be completed by 2/10). Also, any artists here will be given added consideration for BattleMage II artwork, and Armor Games has discussed the possibility of a budget for that project, so if you're a good artist and have some free time this is an opportunity to make some spending money.

Thanks, good luck to all, and I look forward to seeing your artwork!

Any questions or comments about the contest can be posted here.

Sorry for the double-post.

If you're still accepting engines (or even if you're not), this is a prototype I just threw together; I plan to use it as a basis for a fun 'puzzle cube' similar to the one in Lighthouse, or the real life ones you can buy and put money in as gifts or something.

Nice job everyone, all great stuff.

Thanks muchly. :-)
Game's almost done: 2.5 bosses and the cutscenes, and then it'll be released.

Nothing like throwing money at a problem, lol; although I shouldn't talk, I was in a similar situation when I first starting Flashing... you think 'I gots some spare dough, and no skillz; hire out!'

*shrug* Easier and cheaper to learn, IMO, even if it takes longer.

Here's my entry; rather than make a whole new game with my existing engine, I simply took out everything after the first town. All weapons and spells are enabled for playing around with, although they make this part stupidly easy if you use them (especially heal).
Controls are shown in the in-game menu.

Look for the full game towards the end of October!

I *think* you want to use gotoAndPlay(1) (or gotoAndStop(1), depending), but I'm not 100% sure on what you want to do. If the code's in the movie clip itself and you want to move the root frame, just add "_root." to the front of that. And you can always do movement based on your current frame with _currentframe command, like gotoAndPlay(_currentframe-1).

Hope that helps.

Wow, lots of response, fast! =D

I'd love to have your help; just to see what you got, can you put together an 80x80 (Actual figure now is 70x30, but you have lots of leeway, just stay in the 80x80) of the front view of the 'hero'? It'd be a good chance for me to see what you can do. That seems like a good way of 'screening' people.

Although if you want, you can do something else.
Either post a picture here, or email me your sample at mahar@hartford.edu - put 'Flash' in the subject so it doesn't get caught in my spam blocker.

Above is:
The start of the main menu (top left)
The in-game pulldown (top right)
Hero casting 'Shield' (bottom left)
Hero just finished casting 'Spellbeam' (bottom right)
Note with Spellbeam the button in the bottom left has changed to the new symbol; this is lvl 2, 1 is a straight single shot and 3 is an oct-shot.

Here's the main character:
Robin-hood, anyone? =/ help me fix this crap.

Hi all!

I'm in the process of making a game similar to Crystalis; being a Compueter Engineer I've had little experience with Actionscript, but I've picked it up over the last few weeks and now I'm cruising right along. I have several thousand lines of code implemented, with interactive menus, stats/weapons/armor functionality, area transitioning, rudimentary AI for simple enemies, and more collision testing than I can explain and remain sane. It's looking like a great, complex addition to Newgrounds, once it's finished.

This is where you come in; I'm a programmer, not an artist, and what I know in Photoshop works for jack in Flash. I need someone who can draw awesome animations contained within Movie Clips, with set size restrictions; things like walk cycles, spells, backgrounds, and general badass baddies.

Just to show what I *do* have, I'm including some screenshots and frames of the basic-standing-hero; I only did one outfit for him, well, cause as I said I suck at Flash artistry. The actionscripting/animation I can handle, and most of it can be easily replaced with anything new you can add. I'd include some type of Beta, because I do have enough for a functional walk-around, but I want to keep it under wraps for all but those who can help me out (call it incentive to help).

Well, thanks for your time; post here if you're interested in helping me out!
