invader zim fangirls made the word meat repugnant to me. the drawing itself is ok... clear out some of the empty space at the top and maybe change the background color. purple does not do well with those browns and grays.

Response to: Does anyone like 8 bit art? Posted August 17th, 2008 in Art

I like 8 bit art where the pixels are actually the same size. Otherwise, it's just pointless. Also, I'm of the opinion you just lo-rez'd a bunch of images to make this.

Reading manga right-to-left. Posted August 14th, 2008 in Art

Does this shit make any sense? I'm aware Japanese reads right to left, and that is why the pictures also read in that direction, BUT ENGLISH DOES NOT. Reading everything right to left, switching direction for text, is confusing and unnecessary. You can blather all you want about how it's more true to the original, but if you cared that much you'd read that shit in japanese. If they're going to translate it from Japanese to English anyway, it's probably not much more difficult to just flip everything over, even if a few visual elements are now in the wrong place.

MORAL: I hate right to left books. A lot.

If you're getting your game sponsored, you should definitely talk to the audio artist(s) and ask if they want any of the sponsorship money. You could probably just PM them.

art in miniature / a lot of pixels Posted August 12th, 2008 in Art

so i spent 6 of the last 10 days in a minivan. boring and irritating because I can not draw in a moving vehicle. So i got out my mouse and laptop and made a bunch of little pixelly things. idk why i enjoy doing these so much-- something about reducing objects to their smallest possible size is interesting to me.

so anyway here we have-
some big birds and a couple frogs in a pond
an unfinshed one with birds, a squirrel, and some bushes that took forever
some bunnies
a skeleton
a pixel font i made
an agnry faic
more letters, i cheated a little with the gradients
aaaand a little alien hominid.

so yes. I do know what I'm talking about.
you however, don't know anything. you in fact cannot teach yourself art. you can teach yourself to draw, and doodle, and paint. but you can't teach yourself to be a professional. saying that is basically saying you know everything there is to know about art. now how wrong it that? very.
oh, so you've only had two art lessons? boo-hoo for you. here is the first place I've ever taken art classes. before I got in, you know what I was saying? I want to learn. I want to learn from the best. I want to be good.
not, I already taught myself how to draw and paint. I can teach myself.
it seems you've contradicted yourself.

All right you shit, now you're just making things up. You said yourself no one can teach themselves art. And now you've turned around and are saying the opposite. You say I'VE contradicted myself? Once again you bring up your "prestigious" school. That's just fabulous! We KNOW 60 out of 1000 sophomores get in or whatever it was - it's impressive I suppose, but it could just mean the other 59 sophomores were mediocre as well, and the remaining 940 were just terrible. Oh, want to know something funny? You could indeed call me a "professional." I have had people pay me hundreds of dollars for my art. I guess I did teach myself to be a pro after all.

*sigh* why is it impossible for me to know anything about anatomy? I'll say it again. I'm taking drawing classes from a professional. I'm at PGSA. I know how to draw the human figure.

I want to know why you keep bringing up your school. Scrabbling at straws-- "But I go to P - G -S- A! My art HAS to be good!" Been reading your other posts in that other thread, too. "I'm not impressed." Clearly, you consider yourself a far better artist. Clearly, you think you're too good to even waste your time offering help. If you think art can't be self-taught, I'm a living example. I've taken two art classes in my entire life. Look at my deviantart if you want "proof." You talk about how you've struggled and fought your entire life-- fought what? struggled against what? What did you overcome, what ENTITLES you to be "a little pretentious?" No matter how great you might be (and frankly, you're not) humility is important. No one likes a snotty artist.

I'm kind of rambling here, but my point remains the same-- no matter who's teaching you, no matter what school you're at, it's what you LEARN at the school that matters. It's what your teacher PASSES ON to you that's important. Bringing up the same things again and again to prove to us (or yourself) that you're good doesn't really demonstrate anything positive. Quite the opposite, actually.

Oh hey basicsunshine-- chill the fuck out. You're not a bad artist at all. Much better than a lot of the people who waddle through this forum every now and then. But you have a much higher opinion of yourself than your art merits, and you talk down to virtually everyone who critiques your art frankly. Seriously, there are a lot of artists in this forum far better than you. So... basically what I'm trying to say is that you really ought to look at your drawings and paintings objectively. Compare them to other people's drawings and photographs. Like mindchamber said, it takes knowledge of anatomy to distort it-- work on proportions and form in your human figures. I think you'll realize, if you can view your pictures as something other than perfect, you'll see that you have some work to do :/
