I love collab organizers who are just so damn full of themselves. Honestly, you're not that good anyway-- if you tried to join a collab of some of the pivot experts that are out there, you'd be laughed at. But be proud of yourself for trying!

I hate when people just make up crap saying "the bible said it" assuming nobody's going to check because of how big that freaking book is.

someday i WILL read that book, if only to refute the claims of others.

I used to get chain letters all the time. Rarely about actual events, they were usually of the "repost 15 times or a dead girl will bite your earlobes off" variety, but in any case i'd pick apart the obvious flaws and terrible writing. I find any chain letter about a political issue always takes the same condescending, falsely apologetic tone-- imagine "my friends" injected every few sentences, and I can picture John McCain reciting this at some rally. It's a pity the panic-inducing shock-tactic chain letter continue to be circulated instead of the counter-literature opposing them.

nice job, though

when I do programming (not often at all) it's usually just redirecting between frames and things. I'm still using AS2 because I'm not at all a programmer and it's still the easiest for me. I have CS3, but just out of habit I always start an AS 2.0 document :3

I was thinking about this same idea the other day... People spend so much time complaining about gas prices or whatever, when they should be thinking about how great it is that they can drive at all. That oil came out of the ground far across the globe, and was shipped to the US in barrels, carried by truck or plane to their area, and then distributed to gas stations. They can simply pay money to fill their automobile (one of the most complicated pieces of equipment available for consumers) and then DRIVE AWAY. It's like "stop bitching, when I was a boy we had to make our own oil out of dinosaurs we killed ourselves thx."

Something about this game is deeply appealing to me. the colors are beautiful, the animation is lovely, and the whole game has this incredible feeling of completeness and cohesiveness to it. I don't even know how to explain it. I love it. go play it.

man, i haven't dropped in here in a while. it's still the same five people though, so whatev

ON A DIFFERENT NOTE, if this particular note has not yet been covered, what do you guys eat/drink to fuel your flash work? There is one drink that I consume almost constantly at the computer. it is-- raspberry lemonade. it is fuckin delicious and everyone should drink it. I'm serious. For food, I'd have to say cherry sours. If you don't know what those are, they're these small chewy red candies that you can buy for like 60 cents a bag at any convenience store... they taste nothing like cherries but damn they are incredible.

tl;dr - post u fave foodz n drankz

Flash + Ctrl-Enter = Rage Posted September 17th, 2008 in Game Development

so i'm working on art for a game. a lot of symbols onstage, a lot of objects moving around at once. I don't know whether that's related to my problem, but it seems quite likely. My problem is that when I try to test the movie, Flash locks up at the "exporting flash movie" window. The progress bar never moves, and the mouse flickers very quickly between the cursor and the little thinking spiral wheel thing. I can't do anything in Flash, and the only way to get it out of its little dream world is to shut it down via task manager. This has happened SIX TIMES so far today.

Any ideas on what's causing this, or how I can stop it? screencap below

No, it splits the bitmap data into a rough vector copy, it looks really nice.

Unless you do it poorly, then it just looks wiggly and... trace-bitmapped. It doe a poor job with gradients and areas with anti-aliasing. If you trace-bitmap, then clean it up a little, you can get a fairly accurate copy.

Still wanna do flash?

Wow, way to be a bitch. The full CS3 is not necessary to make flash movies-- only Flash is. Other programs may help, but really aren't necessary at all. A mic and recording programs are good IF you plan to do your own recording, but if you're like me and depend on others for that sort of thing, that's unnecessary as well. The only thing on your little list that actually seems somewhat important is a Wacom tablet, which I do think is a very good tool. Also, Flash is available at student discount prices for only $250.

So if I've done my math correctly, making Flash will cost you...
$250.
not a large amount of money if you have a job or something similar.

Have fun :D

Glass/lenses Posted August 23rd, 2008 in Game Development

I'm making an animation where the main "character" is a robot with one shiny pink eye. I'd like to go beyond the average gradients and highlights, to do something beyond the generic "shiny" look. Does anybody have any advice on how to draw/animate glass with somewhat accurate refraction and reflection? Links to tutorials, etc. Please help :)
