Writer's Portal? What's this shit? I thought this was a Flash site. Tom, I recall reading some little snippet of text you wrote about the decision to keep the portal flash-only, as opposed to allowing the submission of video files as well. I respect that decision, and feel adding a Writer's Portal (along with the "Art Portal" I keep hearing about) would detract from the site's focus. Of course it'd bring the traffic rolling in, but it'd also probably expand the site too much.

I think many websites are trying to be all things to all people-- to provide a constant stream of entertainment for anyone who passes by, whether it be written, drawn, animated, or played on an instrument. Deviantart allows almost anything to be submitted. Still images, written literature, flash movies, films. And you know what deviantart is? It's a giant. An enormous, bloated beast, presided over by an elite group of administrators and moderators, who rarely descend from their thrones do interact with the masses. I like this site so much because it's much more personal and inclusive. Tom, you're the face of Newgrounds. Just the fact that you're writing this newpost proves my point-- this is very much your website, and you make it a huge part of your life. Personally frontpaging submissions, promoting artists you like, ALL THAT JAZZ. With an Art Portal and a Writing Portal and who knows what-all, I think that personal charm would definitely be diminished.

There are places for writing for everyone on this site-- their userpage, and the various BBS threads devoted to writing. There's an entire forum devoted to art. If it's important for people to be able to show off every damn thing they shit out, they can put it somewhere else-- I have a deviantart paghe myself, and it's full of things that have never graced this website. I can't stop the march of progress, and if you really think it'd be a smart move to open up the site to even more things I can't do much about that either. But sometimes, staying out of the mainstream isn't a bad thing.

bye tom give me $100 k

The Wii won't play anything but Wii discs, unfortunately.

A whole sub-community within NG that isn't obvious to someone who doesn't browse the site regularly.

attached is a nice image of Zekey's favorite authors, including, oddly enough, Bug and rtil :3

This could work out to be something helpful and interesting, but at the moment it seems like an unnecessary "social networking" tool like every other site out there has plastered everywhere. It doesn't seem like it offers much that the current features already do.

I think the whole friends system is unnecessary and useless. You can add someone to your favorite artists list if you like their work. You can talk to them through various channels of communication if you want. I'm going to skip over the rest of my hyperbolic, drawn-out post and ask "what practical purpose would the friends system serve?"

I actually thought about making a little animation of what happened in my dream, but it really would take forever. Even if i didn't shade everything, it'd still be a huge bitch to draw all the frames and keep the wrinkly look to it.

Response to: simdate maker for hire Posted July 14th, 2008 in Game Development

you're not a simdate maker, and you're not for hire. You have no skills or talents related to the production of a simdate game. Really what you're asking for is someone to do all the work to create a game based off your incredibly vague suggestions. I seriously doubt anyone will help you.

Response to: Not enough memory? Posted July 13th, 2008 in Game Development

It means you don't have enough RAM to complete the operation. Flash needs to store the whole song in virtual memory while it's being imported, and you don't have enough free space to do so. Try closing other open programs you have running.

I'm trying to find the obituary for a submission a friend of mine made probably over a year ago so I can find out what day he submitted it on, in order to make a lovely little tribute flash on its two-year anniversary. Is there any type of tool for searching through the obituaries, or do you have any suggestions to help me find it?

froghead. Posted July 13th, 2008 in Art

I'm really not sure what to call this guy except froghead. He showed up briefly in a recent dream of mine-- he stands behind his desk and apologizes, and then his head flips forward and on the back is this flabbering flopping frog thing. It lasted only a few seconds, but was very vivid, and the whole look of him stuck with me for days afterward. So, I drew him. Tried shading differently this time-- lots of alpha involved here.

you mean making certain things stay in place onscreen the whole time, like a videogame HUD?one could do it by actionscript-- have the things "follow" the vcam wherever it is. I did that once and it worked very well.

The iPhone seems like a very powerful and very versatile little machine that has a very bright future going for it. However, like most things Apple-related, it's expensive, obfuscatory, and bureaucratic. $600 is almost certainly far too much to pay for a machine that can do much less than my computer-- which cost a mere $700 for more powerful hardware, a bigger screen, and a distinct lack of a bigass apple slapped on it to show everyone that I'm Apple's bitch andf proud of it.

larvae doesn't belong up there :c What's the "character?" I made up the entire movie as i went... the only thing that really shows up more than once is the little white prawn that keeps getting eaten by things, and he's only there cause I was too lazy to draw a new one. I'm super flattered though, even if only two people suggested it :3 When I saw willobeen's post I did like a quadruple take, no lie. Then fuckin BomToons is all up in here suggestin my shit all over the place :O

@JACKASSES WHO KEEP SUGGESTING THE AWESOME SERIES-- There are no original characters there. I doubt any character from any video game parody series would wind up on this poster. If that did happen, I'd be so pissed.

@JACKASSES WHO KEEP SUGGESTING MADNESS-- There's already a little madness fellow on the portal header, and if you bothered to read the entire post before flopping your moist hands limply all over the keyboard, you'd know not to suggest anything that's already up there.

I'd suggest... i don't know what. Maybe something by LazyMuffin or Zekey. They both certainly deserve it.

Response to: Intelligent Design and why its dumb Posted July 10th, 2008 in Politics

Even though Shaggy left a while back full of contempt for our brainwashed sheep selves, I think the flaws in his arguments can be boiled down to one problem-- he bases everything off evolution not being certain, when ID is equally "unprovable." Many ID supporters point out gaps in the fossil record-- if you find a fossil that fits roughyl in the middle of a gap, you might say you've filled the gap. In the ID believer's mind, there are now simply two smaller gaps. That's Shaggytheclown17 in a nutshell.

Somehow most of the Intelligent Design believers I've met or argued with all seemed like idiots. In this thread there actually seems to be some good discussion happening. I'm still atheist and still don't agree with most of what's being said by the ID side of this argument, but it's refreshing to see this playing out without accusations of brainwashing or childish insults.

Now that I'm done being a smartass, that video is quite odd. I could definitely see how that'd be frightening to you. I kept waiting for it to suddenly scream or something, but it just keeps talking. In the song, the voice just sounds robotic and uninterested, but with the video, it seems incredibly sinister. The weirdest part is the mouth. Those little teeth, clicking and grinding. They remind me of dentists and drills and painfulness. On the whole though, that video sucked. It could've been much more interesting, just with some different camera angles and lighting or something.
