Hello NG Audio! I dedicated this forum thread for the reference of music artists and performers alike. This thread
is for instrumentalists* who are interested in offering their talents for composers/producers to scout(like a
catalog or Yellow Pages for musicians :P).
I know some may be thinking; why? Why would we need such a thread? Are you mad? They have a Collabinator
so why not use that?
Well, first off, talented individuals who can play instruments are pretty hard to find across the grand old internet.
Secondly, no, I'm not crazy or stupid (okay maybe a bit). Last, the Collabinator is really for someone looking to
work on a certain project (ex.I'm a 19 yr old voice actor looking for work; Heya! I'm an electronic producer in
need of a mastering engineer.)and not really a handy or relevant reference.
Okay, here goes.
RULES for the instrumentalist
You must have a microphone (particularly a good one) in order to record- how will you play the parts for your
employer? :O
Please post under the following format.
This is format in which to post:
[EXAMPLE]
(User)Name:-(to be credited as) Animatix
Instrument(s):- (what can you play?)Guitar, Flute, Vocal
Skill Level:-(how good are you?)Intermediate
License/Cost of Service:(what are your conditions) Free for noncommercial;$2 per musical piece yadayada...
[Note: I don't have a mic to record myself, so sorry guys, you can't choose me! :P]
RULES for Composers/Producers/Scouts
Be clear in your requests when you ask the instrumentalist/vocalist.
Give credit where it is do and follow their terms you apparently agreed to.
Send examples, MIDIs, and notation for your musician. Knowledge of basic music theory/notation is a must.
Hopefully a lot of talented people will post, and hopefully useful for the composers/producers.
Note to Admins/Mods: Apologies if I did this wrong or whatnot. Feel free to modify/delete if I have. I based this
as a template off of how the Voice Actor Advertisement and Voice Actor Wanted threads were structured.
*Instrumentalist/svocalists refer to acoustic (real life) instruments and vocalist performers; VSTs or sample based
instruments do not count- sorry. :(
Wow! As usual, you guys save me from a mental disaster! At least it gives me an insight on what I need to learn; and I agree with MetalRenard- a long question that would take a long time to type up.
I use FL Studio 10, and use free instruments. I followed Step's advice last year, and have used squidfont for a while. Then I moved on to SSO, which while pretty good, still has its issues.
I have been aiming to get EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Silver and Kontakt, but I'm not making that much at the moment. I know it will help me alot.
I really know that in reality, it doesn't matter what plugin/vst/DAW you own; "if you aren't enlightened, forget it"- George Harrison
Whats up, NG! It's been awhile, but I haven't ran out of any questions... :P
I'm kind of confused in composing and creating orchestral music on the computer. Not so much of an artistic/musical side of things, but technical.
You see, I'm not in an area where I can hire a local symphony (will be soon though). So I've started using DAWs to arrange music.
What I don't understand though is what do I need to know to mix the arrangement to sound realistic?
Would I need to learn how to mix and master (be it basic fundamentals)? If so where?
What terms would I need to understand and learn so I know what to use and how to do it? ( Example: bus signals, sends, pass filters, mixers, the concepts of reverb, compression, and limiting. I've never really went as farther than using a preset, so I don't know how to REALLY use them.)
Basically, I might as well say I don't know about "computer music" at all. Please bear with me if I didn't make any sense in my question, as I can't really conceive how I want to ask it. know you guys have helped me in the past; maybe you can again.
Again, thanks for dealing with my incompetence. Sorry I had to ask.
WOW! ABSOLUTELY JUST... WOW!
Ah... starting out, eh?
Well, maybe I could tell you a couple tips...
Playing an instrument is helpful, as you can practice when away from your comp, and it gives you a sense of ideas for melodies and etc. (I play flute, and some guitar)
Like ToxInjection said, I wouldn't expect your very first to be a "Magnus Opus". But don't sweat; that'll make you give up. If you practice and have patience, you'll get better.
Now, you say you want to do "electronix"? Finding a couple good vsts and (you use FL Studio; cool!) you'll be fine. sorohano made a thread here: http://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1042375
Always be critical of your work, but not to the extent of insanity. See where you can do better in the next track.
Melodies are usually in single notes, while harmonies are usually chords (correct me if I'm wrong, guys!). Just mess around in piano roll and make a random lead using a scale. Or, like ToxInjection said (you beat me to the punch with that one, grumble... :P ) try to convey a story to match your song.
Hope this helps! I'm no pro, but I recall starting in the same spot as you, and I would like to help you get started!
I remember when I was starting out last summer and started computer composition (I was using LMMS lol)....
Thanks for everything, guys! I fixed it.
Now, to master some tracks... :)
Wow, this looks handy!

Ahhh...Breed is indeed.

If you want the sound to be "real" as you put it, you'll need to produce the track on a set of flat response monitors or reference headphones, so you hear exactly what it sounds like without it being coloured by equalizers,u sing your "powerful" bass as an example.
Thanks, that was what I was wondering- like a normal audio playback with no "extras". What settings would you consider?
I've been wondering this lately; what settings should your speaker's equalizer be? I want the sound to be "real" as other people are going to be listening to it (I really thought my basses were "powerful" only to find that my settings were set on that.) So does it matter what its on, anyway? Or is there a certain standard?
Shock, I would!
Although I'm not animating yet... :(

Whoops. Didn't even notice this. (facepalm). Anyway, I'll post the code. (But SlideJS looks interesting...)
So I'm making a blog in Blogger, right?
Well, I know a bit of HTML and Javascript, but this is seriously kicking my head.
What's the prob, you ask?
I'm trying to create a custom slideshow on the side of my blog, where users can let alone and let it slide by or they can manually choose. I'm also trying to have where when you click the image, it links to the post.
I can't seem to solve this problem, and some of you guys(girls) do this for a living, so...
Any help?

(jaw drop) Y U NO...
Anyway, EWQL have one of the best orchestra products ever (although some say they're a bit overrated; and nothing beats a real life orchestra, but its close!)

Thanks, sorohanro, but I've got all these from you already in the past!
Isn't that weird? Not really
But seriously, you've been my top provider of free digital instruments.
This helped me alot! I've been puzzled over this exact thing and wondered why my orchestrations always sounded... flat, and not in 3D space. (And it is possible to do in a DAW, cause its done all the time.)
At 9/11/12 01:39 PM, Braiton wrote: This thread might help you a bit on your research.
Thanks! I've been looking for something like this! I just couldn't find the right words for it, I guess...
This might be interesting to discuss besides, I'm trying to figure it out:
How would you emulate multiple instruments? (Like make one vocal, trumpet, violin, etc. sound like an ensemble or mass of instruments.)
Reverb is a possible solution, but only makes the instrument sound like it's in a room (of course).
I tried layering multiple instruments, but they seem not to get louder,( it only eats up my CPU :P )
Any of you figured this "enigma"?
I have to say thanks, guys, cause I needed the help, and you guys had interesting solutions.. And yes, when I get the chance, I'm gonna get me some EWQL (might have to skip out on the car...)
But I guess I should just practice, to quote you guys.
I really need it
All right, so I have Edirol and Sonatina Symphony Orchestra, but I'm wondering if there is something better (cheaper/free). I tried DSK Virtuoso, and used to think it sounded good (it seems to "synthy" though.)
I would love to get my hands on an EWQL product, but we all know money doesn't grow on trees (wishful thinking).
Any suggestions?
I'd like to try out for it.
(Gotta upload those blamed demos!)
Hey, guys! It's AR again.
I was wondering if anybody had the G Town Sampling Church in a .zip format.
If you do, mind inboxing me?
