On the other hand, done right, IMO, games offer up cosmetic gear or fluff that overall makes the game more fun, but doesn't make it "pay-to-win"... Unfortunately, there aren't many games out there like that, as developers know that offering up an advantage against other players is a great way to bring in extra cash.
The problem with this is, even if you're in love with a game, and the "cash for player advantage" factor is kept to a minimum, you can end up paying a hell of a lot more in micro-transactions per month than you would just paying a $15/month subscription fee. I remember talking to someone who played a lot of one particular F2P MMO, and was into the microtransactions (XP pots, pets, cosmetic gear, etc.), and they were telling me one month they spent over $100 on their micro-transactions.
It's a slippery slope... Personally, I prefer games that, not just refrain from "pay-to-win" methods, but offer up a choice, buy things as you go (I.E. Micro-transactions) or pay for a subscription and get everything on that instead. Unfortunately, those types of games are few and far between... and some of them simply don't do it right, offering up 3 tiers of subscription and still making you buy stuff on top of that (EQ2, I'm looking at you).
Very true, I worked for a Korean MMO company a few years ago.
We was one of the first adopters of the free to play model, Wile we started with a very good balance of free vs luxury items, it only took a short wile (2 years) for the line to get blurred and the balance was lost in favor or cash over time.
In my 3 +years in the MMO scene, I have seen other publishers doing the same thing, and ending the same way, It seems to not take much, The sad part is it starts a endless cycle, The quality of updates and new content gets diminished in favor of cash grabs, Item Mall,;lack of free support and is defiantly a killer of the games.
I could go into depth about why and how the model is good and is better in many ways then a paid subscription service, But it has a very high factor of change, The biggest flaw being when the turn around profit doesn't meet the overhead projections. Its a easy crutch to fall on (more cash items, Break game balance)
One that does not have the ability to go back on.
Now take in that factor with the fact many F2P MMO's out there can be very shady and at times forms of legalized scamming. It becomes a ugly trend.
So in short, Wile good on paper and great startup, the fact is the radical change is almost always inevitable.
On a side note:
Here is a scary trend, In order to have a truly working F2P model, The game has to be designed for it, It is not something that can just be applied and tact on to the game, Many new MMO's now start with paid subscriptions at first, to cash in on much of the hype as they can, Then later turn to "Free To Play"
Offering paid users many things as reparations that would normally have been free in a normal business model.

Try PNG format or BMP, as flahs can compress those better.
Also try to keep the original images about the size of the animation.
If not you can animate how you are doing now.
But every so often export the animation as a mov
Then when finished add all the mov clips back into one timeline.
Export that as the swf.
No real way you will have the exact quality you are looking for in flash format. but know the style you are animating with is best used with aftereffects or other none flash (vector) flipbook programs.

I think he means will not get featured, not banned.
This is not a new issue, Its like the LEGO people all over.
Let me put it as a example for all.
You CAN make a tribute animations and you CAN upload it to the internet.
You CAN NOT use said copyrighted music or images to promote.
You CAN NOT use said copyrighted music or images to make any monetary gain.(money is a good example)
So you CAN do a music video, strip it of all flash adds and any links to anything but the artist domain or universe. BUT that tribute or fan made AMV can not be featured.
BECAUSE any studio or copyright holder can make a easy claim that there work, likeness or Images are in fact being used for profit and gain, as newgrounds has sponsors, and attracts a broad audience of hits.
So NG can not afford to show off your work, no matter how good it is.
SO use none copyrighted material if you want to be featured. You not only protect yourself, Newgrounds but also help a up and comer and promote NG's community.

Yup. Exactly.
You have to figure out inside why you do it, and what drives you.
Me, I can hear a song and make my own story to it, some times i even want to take that vision and make it a moving realty and even try to convey my feelings through a new story with the song.
I will continue to do so, as i dont care about my BA, my fame nor if i get front paged.
I do things i want to on my free time, because well...its my life and my time.
I think thats hard for allot of people. If you care so much on your score and how people think, you may find you are left a bit short by the outcome.
This new news does not effect me one bit, In fact i plan to keep on keeping on, as im completely happy with just showing my self and friends.
I dont want impress no one, so i dont feel stifled one bit.
As much as i do love the audio portal, it does not give me the same emotions or inspiration as some songs do(its also mostly all English)
Im a big fan of art and a huge music enthusiast,
So i see things like "Dare" and even Luis tribute to the def tone song as great things.
Point is, figure out what drives you you spend the countless hours on a animation and tribute.
If its for fame or "cool" then re evaluate why you do it.
Me i have storys and messages to tell, and I will keep on keeping on. If it has to be done with a audio portal song or a pro, does not matter to me. I care less if it gets front paged or sits in my profile, or on youtube. all same to me.
Correct me if I am wrong but I think Tom is saying that if you want featured to stop using copyrighted music in your animation projects.
I can see that.
Also if you are making a game, then no where should you use any copyrighted images or music, as you are making a profit from it, either by sponsors or by flash ads.
They did rule that you are allowed to make fan made creations using copyrighted music, as long as credit is given and no profit is being made.
So if there is a song you herd and you just HAVE to make a animated video to, you can, just dont expect it to be featured. (also credit it properly)
And if you are doing a stick fight or sprite animation and just want the ambient music, there are plenty of great stuff in the audio portal.
I dont think he is telling ppl what they can or can not submit (unless its against the TOS)
Just saying its not getting featured and is urging the community to team up and be original.
Ohhh screen shake with big hits!
I like that idea, dunno how that never came up.
That will be awesome and we can do that.
Blood will be in the game.
A sparring partner is pretty good idea.
maybe have it do specific moves the user can set, so you can practice certain things.
Like clinch, take down defense. Subs etc.
great idea guys. Love em.
keep em coming!
I was not sure where to post this.
In games are here
( Im old School so im used to game related things going in Flash Forum)
So right now we are working on a flash based MMA game.
It is set in a style of the old school arcade style brawlers.
So expect very fast past, arcade style game play.
With that said, The game now is under the title "The Big Kabosh"
(hard core fans will recognize that name from "The Voice" catch phrase)
Right now I am in the stage of development...(design is done)
So it is a perfect time to take ideas and feedback for the game.
As of now the game has these main features:
Commentary:
Voice acting the play by play as it happens in the game.
(same commentators as in Stone Gliders)
Create a fighter:
Create your look, Gear, add sponsors, name and nickname.
Also your country and music you want to come out to.
Stages:
Cage, Ring and even the Yamma pit will be included.
Along with size and and style,
From local shows in bars, To grand arenas. (expect to see the Newgrounds arena used as the premier arena, same that will be used in Stone Glider)
Styles:
Boxing, Kick boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Ju Jujitsu and so on will be represented as styles.
Stats:
From doing good in fights, to training mini games.
Add stats and attributes to your fighter as you play trough the game.
Fighters:
Both men and women classes.
It would not be MMA with out female fighters included.
----------------------------------------
----------------------------------------
---------
With that said let me give you a over all lay out on how the game will go.
You start by creating your fighter.
After that you will start in a gym to learn the basic controls.
As of now we are trying to keep the controls as simple as possible.
The game is designed for use with joytokey (controller) but keyboard inputs will look like this:
A- Left/Jab
D- Right/Straight.
S&W - Block/Spraw
Q- Left kick/Leg kick/Knee
E- Right kick/Leg kick/Knee
F- Clinch
Space- Take down/Submissions.
Arrow keys will control the fighter, With up and down changing strikes from low to high, And blocking low and High.
The game will be in 2D and a example would be close to the old Sega games "Greatest heavyweights" Or Evander Holyfield's real deal boxing" with crazy effects and special moves.
Right now the game will feature only generic fighters but im hopping to get the permission to use a certain female fighters name.. So please do not request actual fighters. (i'll try get who i can, but dont expect any real names)
anyways, MMA fans, Fight fans, please post any ideas or input you would like to see for this game.
And yes we are trying to push the limits of Flash games, So we will work hard to cram as much in as possible to the game.

its either photoshop with the pencil tool.
Or the flash pixel ad on.
Could be MS pain for all we know.
more then likely they simple made each image then imported them into flash.

That sarcastic name dropping elitist book is the worst place to start.
Try "Cartoon Animation" by Preston Blair,
Its The Animator's Survival Kit but with out the crap.
The biggest thing you will need to start animating is to wrap your brain around it.
Get in a mind frame of the fact you are not moving lines and images, But making life.
Moving masses and creating feelings and moods.
Then from there you start to study, study life, study physics, how things move and interact.
Then you draw draw draw draw.
It takes a wile and allot of practice, but if your passionate enough you can grow, overcome and start to do things you didn't think you could do.

Or you changed it...
Because i just copy and pasted.
anyways wasn't trying fight, but that little move did put me off.
Good luck though, sounds like a fun game ^^
technically it would be 1970's Japanese animated "A Dog of Flanders"
But if you mean Fully produced outside of US, then its Korea with "Team Justice League"
Or if you mean boomed as in the animation boom then there is no real answer because Korea has been producing animations for over 30 years, but not all studios reveal or acknowledge there involvement with official records.

Yikes
convert your mp3 to a WAV. Flash can compress it better.
Also try to do most your animations and such inside of symbols, Again flash can compress better.
Try to avoid images that are to big, If your using jpegs, convert em to png or bitmaps.
also try to resize them to fit your flash screen, not just transform them down.
try to reuse as many things as you can, Example if you have a black background, make it a symbol and copy and past it, instead of making a new black background.
alot of little things can really help keep the file size down.
also note that your FLA file does not reflect the exported SWF file. so if your FLA is 100 megabytes, its usually due to the fact its holding alot of images and sounds in the library, but when exported its only going to use what is being played and compress the rest.
you kids and your filters...
You can get a "blur" effect the way us old timers used to do it with out the need of filters or special programs.
Simply copy the art, or in this case the symbol of animations you want, past it over top its self. Slightly move it off the center a bit and set the alpha low, repeat this process in different directions until you get the amount of blur you like.
It sounds complicated bit its really simple and doesn't take all that long.

QUESTION 27
In what situation would an animator, or animation team use "Limited Animation"
betterr??
most often used by background artists and special effects teams,
But limited animations is when you reuse certain parts of the cells or copy frames so you do not have to redraw or "work" the art again.
btw if you have a fireplace good, of not, get one and trow that animators survival book in it
At 7/28/10 10:18 AM, Luis wrote: Sometimes acting it out or having someone around you act it out helps when youre in a pinch. I remember this one instance where i couldnt get the hang of the rhythm involved in a skipping animation so i had one of my friends skip for me and let me watch him. It was silly yes, but in the end i was able to translate that visual info into my work.
you would be surprised how many ppl do that,
Its not uncommon at all.
My advice besides practice is to look up Preston Blair's book called "Cartoon animation"
It will not only give you tips and practice skills, but the most important part, wrap your brain around animation.
