You don't need to waste the power to run that other computer as a server. Give WAMP a try. This nice little program will set up a localhost on your computer that you can work from.

Very easy to set up and works great for what you are looking to do. I've been using it for a few months now. Much better than uploading all my stuff to the web every time I update something.

Maybe when I hit level 44.

About a year ago I told myself that if there was any level to stop at, it would be 44.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I had no idea this would have any sort of debate to it. I just figured it was just common sense to protect user information. I don't care if it is not a law or not to do so, I am going to keep user passwords hashed...

Hey guys, I'm building a blog system for my site and was wondering what you guys recommend for hashing user passwords.

Right now I am using md5. I just want to know if there is anything stronger or just better. I'm not too worried about my DB being compromised, but if there is a better way to hash passwords I'd like to use it anyway.

Thanks!

I've been using Win7 since the beta was released. I dual booted 7 and Vista on my laptop, but when the RC was released I went full 7 on my desktop. I can not see myself ever going back to XP (I never had Vista as a primary OS, my laptop was not used that much).

Like Jon-86 said, you can set the row userid to auto_increment. Every time a new user is created it will automatically make the next ID one higher than the last.

If you want to get the highest userid, you could use MAX:

$maxID = mysql_query("SELECT MAX(userid) AS maxID FROM users");
$maxIDQ = mysql_fetch_array($maxID);

I'm not an expert in this, but I am using this in a stat generating file on my site.

Some computers will have an option during the boot screen along the lines of "system recovery." As someone else said, many computers have a partitioned part of the hard drive that contains everything that is needed to preform a full recovery (back to when you got it).

Try restarting and look for something that says System recovery or something like that. It would have a key (F10, F12) next to it. Tap that key until a new screen comes up and from there it should walk you through what to do.

If you don't have this option, take some of the advice of others. Uninstall programs that you don't need, download some Anti Virus software and all that.

Complete and blatant rip off.

But, if you read the fine print you'll see that these images are allowed to be used in web layouts like this.

Still, I think this is very uncool.

Sounds good to me.
Last time, did we ever get more than 8 people in there? The page on Gametracker shows a peak of around 7 (and no, I don't have any useful way of finding this stuff out besides sites like this). While I was around I didn't notice (or remember at least) any lag issues on my end. I did however see most of you guys had pings in the upper one hundreds.

Unrelated, if anyone else is interested in making tf2 maps, I have a few tutorials here on my tutorial site. I'm working on getting a few more written.

Yeah you'd probably lag like crazy on top of whatever server lag is generated by having 10+ people in there (if it gets that full even).

As I learned there is a reason people pay for game servers. Even though you can host one out of a spare computer, it won't be nearly as good when compared to a paid service.

Just a heads up, I might not be able to play that much. No one has come to me yet so I'm still waiting for someone who wants admin.

This will probably be the last time the server will be up. I don't see the point in keeping a server up all the time if no one plays in it.

I'm such a bad scout no buffs will help me. :(

My server IP changed (this is the problem with running one out of your house...): 72.89.130.67:27015
I'll try and keep my userpage updated with any changes to the server so check there if you don't see it.

I think it is acting up today, that last update seems to have refused to take. I'll keep tinkering with it.

Found $10 on the street the other day, so for those of you keeping track I'm now up $35 in the last week! New hardware getting closer and closer!

OH. Admins.
I think you guys should vote on it. Don't be a dick and vote for yourself!

Thanks for the feed back guys. I put the server back to Ubuntu (from debian). From what you guys said, it looks like those "optimizations" only hurt. Maybe now it won't be as bad. As for the connection the server has, I have a 20Mb/s down and about 5Mb/s up over fiber. I'm sure if we had a faster upload speed that would help too, but that costs money. As for location the middle of Long Island NY isn't doing much good. I'm sure a few of you are in some other country. None of this is helping the lag, that's for sure.

Luckily my horse came in yesterday at the Belmont Stakes so that's a cool $25 for me! New server hardware is getting closer and closer now and that will definitely help with clear the lagstorm over this server.

Yeah sorry about the lagtastic server guys, I am running it off an old system after all. Better than paying for a server that no one will use though. Speaking of no one using it, how many players were on it at peak? Before I "optimized" the Linux kernel it didn't get that laggy until there were around 18 or so people on.

Anyway, I am trying to get a hold on some more money so I can get some better hardware to run the server off. So don't give up hope on me just yet! :)

Let me know if there are any problems (other than lag when full, that I know about). The last few days the only one in it was me, no one wants to come over my house anymore. :(

If you guys need anything else (map change, alltalk, what have you) let me know. When there are people in the server, I tend to keep an eye on the console but don't count on it. A few of you are on my friends list so just IM me. Maybe (if this works out, and you guys like the server enough to keep coming) I'll make some of you guys admins or something.
