I went Christmas shopping today and was pleasantly surprised to find out that only two of the shops I went into played Christmas music. Both of them were big chain stores. The place I did half of my shopping in was playing the soundtrack to season 1 of Treme.

Anyway, I drew a Christmas picture.

Yeah, it looks pretty good. I like the line work.

You may need to work on the expression, because it looks like she's doing two different expressions in her mouth and her eyebrows. You should also probably put a bit more detail into the neck and collar bone if you're going to work in a style like that.

So far there haven't been any earthquakes, but everybody HAS gotten zombie disease.

I'm not entirely sure what's going on with those lines under the eyes though.

You must realise the ridiculousness of your request, though, right?

You're asking strangers on the internet to take their time (without pay) to draw you 'anything' on the off chance that you might want to get it put on your body.

Get yourself a spine and decide for yourself what you want on a tattoo. Then pay the tattoo artist, or someone else, to design it for you.

Response to: Western Animation or Anime? Posted December 17th, 2012 in Art

I like originality in terms of character design, which unfortunately anime generally seems to lack, what with most shows and movies falling into the same basic template with a few subtle differences.

However it's not really the most important thing to me for whether or not I'll enjoy a show. The way the show or movie is directed generally dictates more its appeal to me, visually.

With regards to television shows, Western animation has a tendency to be much more interesting than anime in terms of the way things are drawn, in that each show generally attempts to look in some way 'unique'. But Japanese anime has a tendency, maybe, to have more interesting direction than Western animation.

As for which I prefer with regards to shows themselves, I don't care for the vast majority of Western animation or Japanese anime (they're both mostly either for kids or crap). But out of the things I do like, Western animation tends more to hit the right notes for me comedically , whereas Japanese anime tends more to hit the right notes for me dramatically.

Still, Western animation remaining stuck on its 'animation has to, at least in some way, be for kids' idea means that we haven't seen anything on television as interesting as, say, Paranoia Agent or Kaiba. Western animation seems to be getting out of the age ghetto to some degree, so I'm excited for the future.

So, yeah, merits to both.

I'm entirely sure this isn't the best way of doing what you want, but it's one way.

This is a photo I grabbed when I searched 'photo' on Google Images.

I made the photo black and white in Photoshop. Then I upped the contrast a whole bunch until it was basically just black and white in the picture.

Then I made the picture ten times as big, and used the Photoshop filter 'Colour Halftone' with a radius of 12 pixels to turn it all into dots. Then I made it black and white again and shrunk it back down to its original size.

Then to get the effect of the Han Solo picture there I made a colour overlay, and added a noise overlay on top of it.

If you have some questions about comic making in general I can answer, post them in here. That way I can post my answers publicly and maybe other people could get the benefit of me taking time to do that.

But if they're just questions about how to work Manga Studio or something, you're probably better off reading the user guide, or other guides on the internet.

At 12/12/12 10:45 PM, Patonion wrote: lots of problems being listed but no solutions being offered, I'm not sure what to do to her without following the conventional "make her boobs bigger".

It's not an easy thing to offer a solution to, because getting characters to look like women is all couched up in your style when you do something like this. I will tell you that making her boobs bigger won't solve the issue at all. People can see that the characters have boobs. It's not the problem.

The main thing to focus on in cartoons when you're trying to make a character look feminine, I think, is the eyes. Noses can be pretty important too. If you have a certain style, you can put more emphasis on the lips. If you have a more simple style where faces are less distinguishable, the hair and the costuming becomes the most important (though distinguishing only on costume and hair is a lazy way of character designing, generally). But then depending on how you draw, all this could be entirely wrong!

Considering you're trying to come up with your own style, nobody can really tell you how to do all this stuff. What you have to do is either experiment a shitload until you've found something that you like, or look at how other people do it and try and learn some stuff from them. Or probably a combination of both.

Also the entire body shape is a pretty big thing, but I can't really give you much advice about that other than "look at the differences between male and female bodies, then try replicate that".

Yeah but my point is that doesn't change my critique. You asked for feedback and then you said "oh but it's just a preliminary sketch". But given that you asked for feedback, the critique stays exactly the same. In fact when it's a preliminary sketch that's the best time to give pose critique. When you say stuff like that it sounds like you're making excuses, which doesn't help anyone, least of all you.

Why are you even quoting this? I said if I think of something better down the line I'd change it. Unnecessary nit picking.

I was just really curious. You said something that seemed strange to me and I was asking for an explanation

Just started reading your webcomic too. I like it a bunch so far.

I did. She looks like a skinny middle-aged man with breasts and a swollen cranium.

They can if your exaggerating poses, but again, just preliminary work. I'm doing a painting of The blonde girl (Yuro) next.

You should really know that when you're asking for critique there's absolutely no point in giving an excuse like "it's just preliminary work". What does that change about the critique?

It's not like I'm insulting you because you got something wrong, I'm giving advice on how to fix something. You asked for feedback after all.

You could have the feet bending forward if you maybe had a style that gave everyone noodle limbs, but given that her legs are drawn like real people legs (if a little simplified and skinny) people will expect them to work, to some degree, like real legs. And that includes things not bending in the wrong direction.

Most often it's the simplest of names that work the best

What? What are you basing that on?

Your female characters kind of look a little just like dudes with breasts. You've got a little point on their eyelashes, I see, to indicate femininity, but it's not really enough. You may want to make a study of how other people cartoonify female features to improve your own.

Also in the first picture, the blonde woman's ankles look pretty broken. Feet can't really bend up at all like that.

Also 'Space Bandits' is about the most generic name I've heard. It might be a good idea to try and think of something more original and eye-catching.
