You keep crying for scientific evidence, but you don't provide any for your claim that sexual abuse causes homosexuality. Where's the evidence? Find me the link in JAMA or whatever scientifically accepted source to back your claim up.

While I don't that that say that some gay people weren't sexually abused as children, but something like that is purely correlational. Anything and everything could be correlated and made to appear logical.

But we could also make correlational study suggest that children who were forced to eat spinach turns out to be gay... and it could also appear logical too. After all, I don't doubt that some gay people dislike spinach.

I know gay people personally. And yes, I do know at least two who came from tough backgrounds. But I also know straight people too, and I also know a few who had similar unsettling backgrounds.

And I know both of sides have difficulty coping after that sort of trauma, but if anything... they have issues dealing with trust, relationships, and sexual life (not sexuality.)

And even then, not all of them... One of the girls I who I know (straight) has done exceptional for herself, settling down with a good guy and owning a lovely home in the rich area of Saratoga.

I know more gay guys who grew up without sexual abuse, had loving parents most of the times, and lived their childhood happily.

Look, you guys seem to want to debate over my comment about seeing a psychiatrist . After several posts here and some research of my own, I now wish I could take back that statement. Due to my lack of education on the subject, I was under the impression that homosexuality was "caused" by either A) Some psychological problems brought on in childhood, or B) A choice made by the individual. I have done my own personal research and it is clear to me now that it is not a "choice" and not all homosexuals have had issues as children. Moreover, it seems that most of the issues caused in childhood are due to the lack of acceptance with family/friends. So, at the end of the day it is my opinion that people (including myself) need far more education on this subject. I also still stick to my statement about science and it being the key to acceptance. I'm not saying it is impossible without it, it would just make winning this fight so much easier for you. I now personally believe it is scientific, it just seems to be yet another case where science has yet to prove itself. I think it eventually will in due time.

I am still open to debate on this stuff and I have more questions now. How old were you when realized you were gay? My guess would be maybe 10 or 11 years old.. but was there any attraction to opposite sex prior to the attraction toward the same? So basically, when did you truly "know"?

Thank you guys for listening and informing me appropriately.

THEN DON'T COMMENT ON THE GENERAL BECAUSE I CAN PROVE YOU WRONG. Also, can you back up these "facts" of yours? Much appreciated.

Please read what I write before replying to it and do not try to skew what I say and put words in my mouth.
Well then, say what you mean, and mean what you say. You got to give specifics, or else I'm going to interpret what you say how ever I please.

You quoted "normal" as if I said it, which I did not.
You said natural, which, by Dictionary.com, means existing in or formed by nature, SOURCE. Whatever, we're arguing semantics.

In any case, people with mental disabilities are both natural and normal. Mentally disabled people are genetically the way they are, thus giving them the same rights as anyone else.
How about those with say, Down's Syndrome? That's a genetic disease. By your definition, they shouldn't get married, yet they do.

If you want the average person to accept your stance and you truly feel that you deserve different human rights, your people should be pressing science and not politics.
Why? Science doesn't prove anything. How is science going to prove whether gay marriage is right or not. It has nothing to do with it. I'm not arguing for different rights, just the same as everyone else.

It seems as though the homosexual community is trying to pick the fruit before planting the tree.
See above.

Once you get science behind you, you will gain the support of your fellow man.
Uh no. Science has nothing to do with the issue.

If you can prove me wrong, please do so. I actually want to be proven wrong and I am not saying that to be sarcastic. I am pretty open to most things, but I need more than belief, I need evidence.

Apparently you have "my definition" very confused. My stance is that if it is natural and scientific, it should be accepted. That's all. If a person has mental disabilities, downs syndrome, or any other affliction that is genetic, those people should be granted every human right available including marriage and should gain general acceptance by the non-handicapped in their actions. I know people think that "science doesn't prove anything".. It is the quote most heard from religious people. Also, "science doesn't prove anything", but politics do? For me, science proves everything. Give me the hard facts and I'll make a decision. If this debate is not based in science, it's going to be a very long struggle. Get the evidence, get my vote.

Fine, that's agreeable.

As far as seeing a psychiatrist, since homosexuality is not a scientifically genetic trait, most cases seem to be brought about from something that happens to them during their youth.
Really? There's something about my youth that makes me gay?

It has been proven that most homosexuals have some sort of sociological and psychological problems usually stemming from childhood.
Problems? I had a regular childhood going up. No different from my friends, so I have a problem because I'm gay? That's not right.

If this is the case, and it is not "natural", why should they participate in the sanctity of marriage?
Since when did marriage have to do with being normal? Mentally disabled people marry, and by your definition they're not "normal."

Prove to me that it is genetic and my opinions will change drastically.
I don't have to. This isn't about genetics.

My thoughts on this matter lie heavily on the proof of homosexuality being a scientific trait. Since this has yet to occur, it is my opinion that homosexuals should see a psychiatrist instead of a priest.

Thanks to everyone for the great response! We are currently working with ColdLogic to produce some very excellent 3D models for our game.

If you happen to be reading this and you are more of a freehand style drawing artist, we are looking for 2 still images to place behind the 'main menu' and 'level complete' scenes. The scenes would include a war type scenario between an army and hordes of demons. I will discuss the details of the scenes to any potential artist.

Also, those who are interested can play a very early version of the game HERE to get an idea of camera angle and play mechanics. Please keep in mind that this is a very early version and not representative of the final product.

Art & Music Needed For Rts Game: Posted January 28th, 2009 in Game Development

Hello,

Thank you for showing interest in this post. I will get straight to the point so that those who are interested can read on.

We are looking for an artist to draw and produce original graphics for an upcoming RTS flash game. This is a top-down perspective strategy game set in the not so distant future. The graphics and gameplay will share the same style as other RTS games (Z, Majesty, Warhammer: DoW) but set in the future (C&C:RA).

Game Title: Invasion from Hell II: Fire Down Under

Programming: 90% complete
Art: 30% complete
Music/Sound: 10% complete

Description: It is the near future and the biblical 'End of Days' has begun in the country of Australia. Demons are burrowing up through emergence holes all over the earth. It is your job to create a base and command a group of soldiers to attack and overtake the demons. Stop the invasion from hell before evil consumes the earth.

What we need from you:

ART:
Buildings
Vehicles
Demons
Soldiers
Turrets
Emergence Holes
Possibly weapons (guns, etc)

MUSIC:
Intro / Menu (dark style)
Gameplay music (any style)
Quality Recording

What you get:

Credit
Collaboration Experience
Friends
Fun

This would be a good time to discuss compensation. This is a free flash game developed by friends who share a passion in creating games. Any money that is made from this game will go toward the creation of future games. If by some chance we end up making some substantial profit, you will be compensated from the percentage earned. I just want to make it clear that you should not contact us if you are looking for money up front (or money at all for that matter).

If you enjoy working with us, we will collaborate on future projects. We already have several games on the queue.

Another question..

Any idea on how I would add gotoandStop functionality to the code pasted above? I would like to be able to edit the XML file to tell the SWF to gotoandStop on a specified frame on the main timeline. I have already tried a few things and I can't seem to get it to work.

Can't you just put you work on two different frames of the same scene?

A very simple fix indeed. I moved my preloader over to the main scene and everything is working perfectly. I guess the whole scenes thing in Flash is pretty much pointless. So, I learned my lesson.. thanks for the tip Fion.

Help with menu code. Posted October 17th, 2008 in Game Development

Hey guys,

I found I really cool XML based menu online that I want to utilize in a project. My problem is that when I run this all by itself with no scenes, it works perfect. But, when I try to add the menu to my project (which has a preloader scene(1st) and then the main scene(2nd - where the menu is placed) ) it fails to initialize. Here is the code in question:

//designed and developed by www.nogrids.com
//very easy to set up a new menu, just change the values from the xml file

import flash.filters.DropShadowFilter;
import mx.transitions.Tween;
import mx.transitions.easing.*;

stop();

//create function to add buttons
function addButtons() {
pushOverX = 0;
for (i=0; i<obj.buttons.length; i++) {
btn = buttons.attachMovie("menu", "menu"+i, i, {_x:pushOverX, _y:0});
btnsArray.push(btn);
pushOverX += btn._width + btnSpacing;
btn.itemOverColor = obj.buttons[i].attributes.itemRollOverCo lor;
btn.itemColor = obj.buttons[i].attributes.itemColor;
btn.parentBtn.name_txt.text = obj.buttons[i].attributes.title;
btn.parentBtn.name_txt.textColor = btn.itemColor;

//create menuItems array to store the text labels (do not change the array name, keep it >>menuItems<<);
btn.menuItems = new Array();
btn.links = new Array();
for (j=0; j<obj.buttons[i].childNodes.length; j++) {
btn.menuItems.push(obj.buttons[i].childN odes[j].attributes.title);
btn.links.push(obj.buttons[i].childNodes [j].attributes.link);
}
//add shadow filter
btn.filters = [ds];
}
}

var ds:DropShadowFilter = new DropShadowFilter(2, 45, 0x000000, 100, 6, 6, 1.1, 3);

//space between buttons
var btnSpacing:Number = new Number();

//object that contains data from xml
var obj:Object = new Object();

//create nex xml object
var xml:XML = new XML();
xml.ignoreWhite = true;

//after the xml is loaded, load variables and parse the date to obj
xml.onLoad = function(succes) {
if (succes) {
//bS = Number(this.firstChild.attributes.spacin g);
obj.buttons = this.firstChild.childNodes;
btnSpacing = Number(this.firstChild.attributes.button sSpacing);
//function call
addButtons();
} else {
trace("xml could not load");
}
};

//the path to the xml file
xml.load("menu.xml");

//this part is for tooltip functionality, if you don't need a tooltip you can delete the code
var mouseListener:Object = new Object();
var btnsArray:Array = new Array();
var showMenu:Boolean = true;
_global.showTooltip = true;

function hideAll() {
for (i=0; i<btnsArray.length; i++) {
mc = btnsArray[i];
mc.enabled = false;
}
buttons.tweenAlpha.stop();
buttons.tweenAlpha = new Tween(buttons, "_alpha", Strong.easeOut, buttons._alpha, 0, 2, true);
}
function showAll() {
for (i=0; i<btnsArray.length; i++) {
mc = btnsArray[i];
mc.enabled = true;
}
buttons.tweenAlpha.stop();
buttons.tweenAlpha = new Tween(buttons, "_alpha", Strong.easeIn, buttons._alpha, 100, 2, true);
}

Mouse.addListener(mouseListener);

mouseListener.onMouseDown = function() {
if (_global.showTooltip) {
if (showMenu) {
showMenu = false;
tooltip.txt.text = "+ Click to show menu";
hideAll();
} else {
showMenu = true;
tooltip.txt.text = "- Click to hide menu";
showAll();
}
}
};
tooltip.txt.text = "- Click to hide menu";

tooltip.onEnterFrame = function() {
//follow the cursor
if (_global.showTooltip) {
this._visible = true;
this._x = _xmouse+10;
this._y = _ymouse+5;
updateAfterEvent();
} else {
//if a menu is active hide the tooltip
this._visible = false;
}
};

If you guys want to see the XML, let me know. I know this has to be a simple fix, I appreciate any help that comes my way.

Although, if the cancer patient is an atheist and truly knows in his heart that there is no afterlife, he will be probably make his peace with his family and hopefully carry on some sort of legacy (a son, music, business, book, ms paint stick drawing).

I am in the middle of my flash project. I've been working on it for approx. 5 months. The game is scheduled for completion in Jan. 2009. That will put me at like a 9 month project time. One of the major reasons it has taken me so long is that I have spent the first 5 months learning AS 2.0 and programming the game engine. Now I am moving on to graphics.

Take a look at this example, it looks more realistic because the blood is affected by gravity rather than flying out everywhere.

I must disagree with you in saying that "It is your job as the artist to make sure it is understandable (eventually)". I do not feel the need to make anything understandable to anybody. I also feel that my job is to create anything I want to create regardless of anybody's understanding. The image is what it is. If the person can not understand a piece of artwork even after being explained the meaning behind, it probably means that the person is simply not aligned with the artists process of thought. To say the artist has failed would simply mean that you have made a personal decision to close your mind. I will be the first to admit that I do not fully understand most of the art that I truly love. This is why I love it. Personally, I do not like to be spoon fed that which is meant to be interpreted.

The artistic value is metaphorical.
To point these things out for you would be going against the point of what art is supposed to be. If this artwork does not invoke any feeling for you and you don't see the point.. move along.

Response to: Photorealistic game characters Posted September 17th, 2008 in Game Development

I am currently in the process of making a game where all graphics are created from captured video or photo's. Right now I am finalizing the game engine and will shortly begin the video capture process of the characters. My plan is to shoot everything on green screen.. clean up the video in after effects.. make a transparent BG and export the animation as PNG's frame by frame into my game.. I have a few ideas on how to make everything smooth.. I have yet to try anything but here are some of my ideas when I start.

Ideas:
-Green screen capture characters.
-Light the background and the char separately .
-Conduct the character moves in slow motion for easy capture.
-Have all characters stand inside of a taped square on the ground (to maintain proportion throughout the process).
-Hang a green tennis ball from the ceiling so that all of the character attack the same place.
-Keep the camera in the same position during the entire capture process.
-Use frame by frame PNG files from video to maintain optimal quality (there is prob several ways of doing this).

Response to: Bilna's Art Thread Posted September 17th, 2008 in Art

I'm not sure because I don't draw on paper.. I just mean ink as in solid color ink.. I've seen that you use a lot of pencil and pen ink.. I would like to see your work in solid / no sketch mark type ink. Or even import it and trace it all in photoshop or flash to achieve a more solid look. Also, once it's traced in photoshop or something, you can add effects to the images.. some lens flares, gradients, blurs.. or in flash you can put in some particles or animate the text.

Just something I would like to see with this style of text.
