Okay, I just wanted to say to all you people who think the wii is bad that its not the wii's fault! It's these other horrible game developers/publishers trying to make a quick buck off these horrible games they make for the wii! But the games that are good, they're REALLY good. But not sonic games.
Unfortunately sir, the Wii DOES suck.
Let me explain this.
First, the system itself.
We're into the 7th generation of game systems. We have the Xbox 360, the PS3, and the Wii competing against each-other.
With the newer systems out there, they've improved in most aspects, which means better graphical capabilities and computing power, making them able to render games in amazing detail with little to no hiccups in game performance at all.
The Wii's system specs are far, FAR below that of the Xbox 360 and the PS3. The 360 and PS3 have insanely powerful hardware, and HD playability up to 1080p, which brings you the epitome of graphical quality and performance. This doesn't necessarily make the games themselves better, but it does add a nice quality touch to them.
The 360 was a huge hardware improvement over the Xbox. The PS3 was a similar improvement over the PS2's hardware capabilities. The Wii? It was hardly an improvement at all.
The Wii is just a slightly better Gamecube with a new control scheme. The Wii has barely any processor speed improvement over the Gamecube, and worst of all, it only supports 480p EDTV.
May I ask why? We live in the 7th fucking generation of game systems, and they all are perfectly capable of producing stunning HD visuals, and Nintendo decided that wasn't necessary in any way?! The Wii looks HORRIBLE on my HDTV as a result, even with the Component video cable, but as I said, it only outputs 480p.
Now, the good thing about the Wii, though, is it's control scheme. The Wii remote came as a pleasant surprise to the market with it's motion sensing, IR pointing, and whatnot, which most systems, to my knowledge, didn't have at the time. This added an extra touch of immersion into the games themselves, a step towards virtual reality-esque gameplay.
While the controls are fluent and easy to grasp for beginners, and the 1st party games doing very well on the system itself, the main issue I have is the lack of good 3rd party support. I mean, what this system needs is some First Person Shooters. Like DOOM! That would be awesome! I don't want to see Super Mario Galaxy again for the 3rd time, nor do I want anything else 1st party that's just the same idea re-used over and over and OVER AGAIN. The diversity of games on the Wii is a huge disappointment.
The Wii has potential to be an excellent gaming platform, but the lack of support and the sub-par hardware limits this system's capabilities greatly. The Wii deserves to have far better hardware and 3rd party titles than it does now. Why shouldn't Wii Sports look far superior than what it looks like now, but keeping the same gameplay that makes this game good? And while SSBB looks good as-is, it can still be a LOT better. And I'm sure playing some good classics like Doom, Duke Nukem, Wolfenstein 3D, and others with the Wii's interesting controls would be a real treat, too.
So, since I've owned a Wii system for so long now, and finally got bored of it, you know what I did? Hacked it.
The Wii is in the same boat as the PSP. The only way to make it far exceed it's capabilities is with homebrew. With homebrew, you can turn that white plastic piece of shit into something useful like a DVD player, web server, and far, far more if I wanted to. And you can do similar things with the PSP. And since the PSP is a handheld, it's far more convenient to, say, play Castlevania on the go, or Doom in the palm of your hand, rather than play it on a home system, depending on the circumstances, or personal preferences.
But with all that said, the Wii to me is just an enormous disappointment. Nintendo got it right more than 15 years ago, and they seem to be losing that touch as time goes on. If Nintendo can't make a vastly powerful game system in the future which takes everything good about the Wii and multiply it several times, adding things like HD graphics, and better controls by the 8th console generation, then Nintendo is for all intents and purposes dead to me.
TL;DR: The Wii sucks, and needs serious improvement.
