Back to Born In The Wrong Decade

Edited at 2014-11-12 22:25:28

I think many people fall into the trap of thinking that X decade was the best decade. I read an article once that went through each decade of the 20th century (I think) and pointed out the massive problems facing the world then. Every decade had pros and cons, but I think we often only see the things we want to see and omit the rest.

I had a Bosnian friend once who had to flee to Germany then to the US to escape the war. She bitched about Americans this, Americans that all the time and how Bosnia was so much better (she hadn't been there since she was a kid). She took a trip there and found out the current REALITY of Bosnia and how it didn't match her nostalgic memories.

I think we all do this at some point. In relationships it's called "splitting" - seeing the qualities in a person you want to see and ignoring the rest. I think these are all related.

Sure, the 70s may have had many positives over now, but we also had a lot of bullshit going on then too. Every decade in the history of the planet has been like this, but we forget.

To me, right NOW is really the best time to be alive. We're less violent than ever. Plus, look at all the technology and free flow of information and ideas via the internet. We have a lot of problems now, but we always have.
