Back to Free software to make 16-bit music

Edited at 2014-11-05 01:33:41

I see people making SNES remixes, Genesis remixes, etc. They are pretty much a song using 16-bit console sounds. I want to make remake a Final Fantasy game in 16-bit and perhaps post a sample of the music onto Newgrounds. However, I am pretty much a newbie at this and have no experience whatsoever. I heard that you could use a "soundfont" but otherwise I have no idea what to do How do I get started?

Thank you.
