I don't see where it's "sensible" at all really. I think it's just a case where the angry minority needs to get over themselves. Polls show the majority is for gay marriage, last I checked you didn't have to agree with the majority, you just had to live with it. I do it every election cycle when I don't get what I want, so do you.
You're right, the angry minority should totally live with whatever the majority says. Doctor King was wrong to speak out against the majority who supported things such as segregation. Oh wait, no he wasn't. You have to fight for what you believe in, be it right or wrong in the minds of others. Of course, as I've said before, I don't care either way. I find it amusing that you're trying to frame me into some angry bible thumper who is sore about the gay marriage issue.
I don't think it's that much of a problem.
It's really not, to be honest. Some people make it a problem though.
There's no pressing point to I'm saying. Appeasing some people who have been fine and dandy letting "marriage" be a legal term until all of a sudden people they disagree with want to get in on it doesn't sound like a government problem to me, sounds like a personal one.
You want it to be my personal issue. Sorry, it's not.
Guns and marriage aren't the same.
Very much the same. You got those who want to deny the right, and courts tearing down laws that deny such laws.
Gay marriage is going to happen, as more states strike it down, and the tide to make it enshrined federally gains enough momentum, you're going to see the holdout states get bowled over like they did with Civil Rights. I see this going exactly the same damn way, the markers are all there.
True, but there is always the underhanded trickery that the rights deniers use to keep denying. Poll taxes comes to mind, as do laws on gun licensing that makes it almost impossible to own a gun. I'm sure the holdout states will figure something out. They always do. then the courts come in, put a boot up their asses and tell them to knock it off.
Then why make a thread which is about that? You opened with that, not about simply saying "I think marriage shouldn't be a legal term" you specifically charged this with gay marriage. Now I call you on the carpet about if we're going to have marriage as a legal institution, all citizens should have the benefit....and you back away. If you didn't want to discuss the thing you brought up....why bring it up?
I find it amusing you can't figure it out. You act like you're intelligent, but can't figure out why I would bring it up. It's all spelled out in the OP. If you're looking for some sort of hidden message, you won't find it.
Which oh look, we can simply do that by expanding it to same sex couples! No problem! THAT is the simple solution my friend! Not changing the definition and creating a fire storm of pissed off people across the nation. It's not simple to tear down or change terms. The simple solution is to just expand it out like you're suggesting and when the minority realizes the world isn't ending, they'll get used to it and shut up. Or we'll learn how to ignore them like we do with people who still can't bring themselves to accept Civil Rights for all.
It's actually quite simple to change terms, the government has done it many times in the past. But then again, we're just going to keep going round and round with the same trite bullshit, so I think we'll just have to agree to disagree.
Yep, all to distract everybody from the shitty stuff they do. That's why I'm for just getting the damn thing done already so we can move on.
It's going to be one long slow boring process, so better get ready for it. Of course, the end of one battle will lead to the beginning of another. Once gay marriage is allowed in all 50 states, then comes the battle to pry open church doors and force the pastors to marry gays. That will be fun to watch. Of course, that battle has already begun, but it'll become more intense in time.
I can't wait to see how people twist "separation of church and state" to where churches can be punished for 'discrimination'. It'll simply prove a theory I've had for a while that everything is legal (or not) as long as you can get a judge to agree with you.
