We proudly present…
Newgrounds is proud to present our first Annual Flash Awards!
Every day, hundreds of thousands of viewers visit this site to watch, rate, and review Flash games and movies of every type imaginable. In doing so, every single person plays a part in determining the top five for each day.
Each month, these daily lists are combined – along with any other submissions featured on NG's front page – into a pool of nominees. And each month, it is from this pool of over 150 submissions that 2,000 of Newgrounds' most active users vote to select the very best. At the end of the voting, the creators behind the top five games and movies are awarded cash, prizes, and the accolades of their peers.
This year, we used the monthly contests to help us generate selective lists in two obvious categories: Best Game and Best Movie.
Read all about the selection and voting process here!

Voting Criteria
Judges will make up their own minds as to which submissions they'll choose as their favorites, obviously. That's the point of having a panel in the first place…
That said, we are encouraging them to consider the following criteria while making their decision:
Movies
- Quality of animation
- Style and originality
- Quality of writing
- Pace and sense of timing
- Score and sound effects
Games
- Overall concept and originality
- Game mechanism and controls
- Replay appeal
- Level of difficulty/accessibility
The voting process
How were the nominees chosen?
The pool of nominees for each category is comprised of the following:
- The top winner from each month. (If the winner was a solo staff submission or did not have an objective (in the case of games), inclusion was passed down to the next place.)
- Top winners in special NG contests. (The winner of each contest was placed into either the Game or Movie category).
- Submissions included as Honorable Mentions. (These were chosen by Tom Fulp to round out the list to 18 total entries.)
How was the panel chosen?
The voting for these awards will be handled by the two pre-selected, 12-person panels above. The Newgrounds community and the panel of 2,000 active members did their part to help us reach this point, now the final decision rests in the hands of the judges.
The list of people invited to participate in the final phase of this process have been selected for their noted expertise in art and/or animation, familiarity with current Flash animating techniques, or their contributions to the Newgrounds community. Every attempt was made to include a variety of people that cover the major aspects of making a submission for the considered category: artists, animators, programmers, designers, and game musicians.
How will the voting be handled?
The winner in each category will be chosen using a closed instant-runoff voting system, whereby each member of the panel will privately choose five favorites from the list of nominees and rank them in order of preference. If a submission receives a majority of the votes, it will be declared the winner. If there is not a majority (e.g. does not receive more than 50 percent of the votes), the submission with the fewest votes will be eliminated. The votes will then be recounted with each ballot cast for the highest-ranked choice which has not been eliminated from contention in a previous round. The process will repeat in this manner until a winner has received a majority.
The winners of the coveted "Tank" Award for Best Game and Best Movie will be announced Friday, May 30, 2008. Stay tuned!
