"At least it was in tune, for the most part..."

...I'm not really sure what else to say, or not say.

I take it you're young, or just starting out, which would explain why you didn't follow the changes during your solo. But you stayed pretty safe in the realm of the pentatonic, so I guess I should hand it to you for not trying to reach too far past your limits. I realize that this was a practice session, but theres almost no reason to practice your "foot in the bell" low A, because you'll never use it in practical situations--I've only seen it written in a couple of Rob McConnell charts purposely, and only then for effect, and I can't think of any alto players who seriously try to go that far down on the horn.

Bravo to you, though, for putting this out there for the world to hear and criticize. Takes guts

Keep practicing, and it will come together. Good luck.

Author's Response:

Harshness! Eek!
I'm young, and I didn't follow the changes because, as I said, I was just having fun!
Also, I'm not great at actually following the written changes, as I'm not currently able to read them all. So I find a safe spot, and stick with it when I don't know what ta do

As for the foot in the bell, again, I was just having fun. I mean, what good is jazz if its boring for the player? ^^
And my teacher does, Sam Skelton. He can get about 4-5 octaves on the alto. Crazy, I know.

Nice to hear from another saxophonist!

"I don't see..."

...why you'd beat yourself up for being random. Being random is something jazz prides itself on. Of course a 20 minute odyssey is a bit much but being random shows the true style of the performer. A couple suggestions.

Same song.
Up the volume on the accompanying instruments just a touch, don't overpower them.
Keep practicing and try and do a mistake free run (still friggen impressive at how few there were in this one)
Keep the rehearsal feel while cleaning it up a bit.

Just keep playing man. That's good enough for me.

March 10, 2008

Author's Response:

Well, the problems behind the mistakes
One: I was trying to do a note nearly impossible on the instrument. Requires your FOOT in the bell, which is hard. Very hard.
Two: I had a new reed, which sometimes stutters you and makes higher/lower notes alot harder.

Thanks for the review, man!

"Shame about the accompaniment being so low"

date: March 6, 2008

Because you've got a great jam here. I had it playing in the background while I was doing other stuff, and it's great music to chill to.
Diggin' the tunes, man! =P
This is how you play a sax! Great job, love jazz, there aren't enough people on newgrounds that record their own instruments (myself included), it's a refreshing break from all the techno =D

Author's Response:

Aw, thanks LoveBlimpman!
I'm glad you liked it so much.

And yes, there is WAAAAY to much techno here.

"Well, I have to hand it to ya'"

by: Bosa

It's a good track overall. It sounds like a rehearsal session rather than an actual performance.. no offense intended. You're making a good start by submitting a live performance and I'm sure you'll get far here on the audio portal if you keep on practicing!

It's better than what I can do jazz-wise,
Bosa

Author's Response:

Thank you Bosa! And as for the rehearsal session, that sorta is what it is. So, that means it turned out well :P

And hearing that last line from you means alot.
I'm putting that in my imaginary online NG scrapbook!

"Very nice."

date: March 4, 2008

I always screw up when I know it counts too, heh. I'm not exactly fond of the overall tone of the Sax and I would have loved the background to stick out more, but considering it's sort of a "jamming" session, I can't actually complain about how professional/neat it sounds. The playing's fine IMO, very little mistakes. Nice work anyway. 5'D because I'm feeling nice today :D

March 4, 2008

Author's Response:

Sorry bout the backgrounds, was playing them out of speakers, and the mic is 'noise cancelling,' so I suppose it tried to oust the backgrounds. Then again, I did warn you to turn the volume up :P
And, as for the tone, I guess today just wasn't really my day :(

Thanks for the review!

"Bad-ass"

date: March 4, 2008

Awesome, man. Nothing I can think of that can be improved on, it's flawless.

In my opinion, a musician's best work is recorded when he doesn't know he's recording. :)

March 4, 2008

Author's Response:

Very true. I always screw up when I know it counts XD
As for flawless, I think I could have been a bit less random, but maybe I'm just being overcritical (feel free to chat with me about it in a PM)
Thanks for the great review, glad you enjoyed it!
