NGADM 2017 Round 2

Oh the fading grey across the land
It is here we will take our stand
And our minds all aligning with hope
But the fields still call me home

Brethren, the time has come
Together, we fight as one
(All to arms, all to arms!)

On we ride, on we fight
Straight into the dead of night
Take up arms, steel your heart
And our blood will end the blight

Light the sky, should we die
Let them hear our battle cry
Hold your ground through the storm
Tonight we are the battle born

Daylight fades on dust and bone
Where men shall lay their stones
Hallowed ground that cries out for sacrifice
As the blood spills from their throne

And if the end should find us quickly
Weather with your might
We will be true in failure or victory
Standing strong we are the battle born

Oh, think of wars we have won
And the songs we have sung
Forever we'll fight together

Oh, should our blades become worn
And we die in the morn
We shall feast in the halls forever

On we ride, on we fight
Straight into the dead of night
Take up arms, steel your heart
And our blood will end the blight

Light the sky, should we die
Let them hear our battle cry
Hold your ground through the storm
Tonight we are the battle born

great track! great writing, really mind bogglingly good production imho. so keep that in mind while i give you a ton of thoughts =P

a few thoughts:

i really liked the sighing vocals at 0:15 (and later on in the track too), and i wish they received more of a spotlight in the track (they might have been my favorite aspect). like what if there was an outro that looped them, then gradually adding other elements on top??

other thought is: i wonder if another genre would have suited this melody and progression better? your progression is really intricate and thoughtful, and the melodies are great too, and im not sure if such a high octane energy driven genre like metal fits them the best? i'm wondering if a more stripped down production that allowed the compositional elements to really take the focus would be more effective ???

last thought: the build into the chorus is always a bit underwhelming to me. i think that the biggest offender is 1:04, where the first time i was listening i legitimately had to consciously go "oh i guess this is the chorus now" because there's almost no change at all in energy =P the energy level is so consistent that it doesn't really register at all lol. 3:12 is a tad more effective, but it still has that problem to a large degree. either make the lead in 8 bars or so quieter before the chorus, or REALLY fill out the chorus with cymbals and stuff. a comparatively 'big energy' chorus would have done a LOT for this track imho.

anyway it's a great track! it's been a pleasure to see you guys refine your songwriting abilities over the years - the melodies in this one are super solid, and this song has such a tight arrangement, it's amazing =)

P.S. vocals are perfect volume this time bb ;-)

I like the guitars and the energy at the beginning. The vocals in the background at :11 were a nice touch, too, although the chord progression is a little cliche. The vocals at :32 had a lot of intensity, and a great raspy edge. I also like the lyrics themselves a lot. The instrumental section at 2:11 was a great relief from the continuity of the vocals. The vocals are also much more up-front in the mix this time, so I commend you for that! As always, the production quality is top-notch. If I had to complain about something composition-wise, it might be that the second refrain “on we ride, on we fight…” could’ve used some variety when compared to the first one. Still, I’m exceedingly impressed with this track. The instrumentation, the theme, the mastering, the emotion - it’s all there. By all means, keep it up, guys! ;D

9.5/10
