Say Something (Cover)

Why hello there!

So quite obviously, this is a cover of A Great Big World's track, "Say Something". To be honest, this is actually a rather causal cover, especially considering how the piano was arranged. In actuality, the piano base is just improvised along the chords of the song, and it's totally off tempo and everything.

The main focus in this track for me, was to try out how well I could record and mix vocals, as it's definitely an area in which I need to practice a ton (including singing itself). Let me just say that I probably picked the worst possible song for me to sing, considering the fact that I have a very minor lisp, and I can't pronounce any word including a "th" THat well eiTHer. But, I tried my best to make due!

As for the mixing, as it's just one instrument and one voice, I think it went fairly well, as an experiment. Sure, a better producer could make this sound way, waaay better. But I'm honestly rather happy with the result :)
As for the recording, I was fairly close to the mic, so you get to hear all the lovely mouth noises now and then. Sweet.

Huge thanks to Jordi, aka. EtherealWinds, for being like "Bitch, I'mma teach you to sing that song!" (I may have paraphrased him just a little bit), and for giving me a very helpful private singing lesson <3

So yeah, I hope you enjoy this slight deviation from my normal kind of uploads (though I doubt there is such a thing for me anymore at this point). I'd love to hear what you peeps think of the sound, and if you have any helpful tips?

Thank you for listening :'3

Lyrics:

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one if you want me to
And anywhere I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I... I am feeling so small
It was over my head
I know nothing at all
And I... I will stumble and fall
I'm still learning to love
Just starting to crawl

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you (Oo-oo-ooh)
And anywhere I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you

And I... I will swallow my pride
You're the one that I love
And I'm saying goodbye

Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you (Ooo aa-haa-aah)
And anywhere I would've followed you (Ooo oh-ooh)

Say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something, I'm giving up on you
Say something, I'm gibing up on you
Say something...

I listened to this song soon after it was published but I forgot to review it. I just listened to the original before coming here. Your piano improv is much more interesting than the bland playing in the original. You have a great singing voice. With a different accent, I can imagine you sounding like certain English pop singers. Besides for pronouncing th as d, you seem to pronounce some vowels slightly differently. This isn't a negative criticism, I just want you to be aware of it. I enjoyed the cover, and next time this song's melody comes to my mind, I'll listen to your cover first.

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Oops, almost missed this in my feed! Thank you for the nice words!
Yeah, I definitely need to work tons on my pronunciation (I also need to train away my slight lisp at some point).
This piano improv isn't even close to being the best one in regards to this piece that I've played! But this is the one I happened to record, with a steady tempo. But there's a lot that can be done with this piece :)
Don't worry about me taking the critisim as negative; in fact, I appreciate it! ^ ^

I actually have a RAW phone recording of me singing this at a later point, although in the original key:

Even if I had a cold at the time, and the quality is obv worse, my performance was a bit better (aside from 1:41 and a few other parts). Thanks for relistening and reviewing!

It's amazing, all of it. Your singing voice is good, although you sound a bit unsure when you are singing *it can be heard on the voice* or i am just bad at listening. But i love it, it's good :)

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Why thank you mister!

You're not bad at listening. The "uncertain" sound is because of three factors:

1. The main reason is that I'm not yet good at controlling my breath

2. The second is that I'm very close to the mircophone, so you can hear all the small details and nuances of my voice

3. I'm also singing very softly; I sang very early in the morning, and I didn't want to bother the neighbors (I live in a highrise). It still sounds loud enough, because of the mastering. But the soft tone makes it more difficult to keep a steady voice, which probably accounts for some of the uncertain sound.

Thank you for listening and for leaving a review! :D

Wow, your singing is pretty good! How long have you been practicing?

LucidShadowDreamer responds:

Thanks a lot! That makes me really happy to hear :)
That's a tough question to answer. I'm not sure if I've ever practiced really seriously, but I'm always singing a little bit now and then, when I'm out for a walk or when I just happen to get a chance. My main problem is that I don't have a lot of places to practice in, as I'm usually not alone somewhere. But lately, say for the last 5 months or so (and especially the last 2) I've been making more time for myself to sing tons of various stuff, whenever I get the chance. To a huge part, it's because Jordi has inspired me to try taking singing more seriously, and he has been motivating me along the way too :3
