Inspired by Starwish : http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/572374
...and its soundtrack : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYer_bJC7pI

...and this is also my first submission for the NIM Contest ! Category : Menu music

Actually, when I began this one, I only knew I wanted to do something a bit similar to Starwish's soundtrack "Under The Radar" for the NIM contest. I also wanted to do something a bit more subtle than my first two submissions, and finally went for a slightly more cinematic approach to the contest, while trying to keep an overall feel a bit similar to the "reference" I used.

Although it was composed while having in mind some specific situations (ie. a dialogue/briefing just before a mission), I think this track could work quite well, for example, in a level selection or something like that, hence the category.

Instruments :
Orchestra : CineSymphony LITE
Percussion : Studio Drummer, Sync'd Cymbals Plus
Additional instruments : Berlin Grand Piano, Scarbee MM-Bass, EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Silver (for the tremolos), Celestia (for a synth I was too afraid to put louder xD)

Interesting. The piano in the beginning I feel maybe a part of the mid section needs to be turned down, maybe low end, but could just be me. This is really nice, calm and relaxing. I agree with Mattashi about the MGS vibe. Feels like this could be for a spy game or something lol. Though I don't like the Call of Duty games anymore, I used to play them, reminds me of some of the menu music for them as well.

Well mixed overall, and though I was hoping for a slighter variation to change it up a little, it's not always bad to keep the tone the same throughout, a calm tone. Well done. Great menu music.

Actually, for the mixing, it's been a tough one. Each time I thought I was done, some time later I noticed something else needed to be changed, so I actually made 15+ revisions at the mastering stage. It was increasingly difficult to take a step back, so I may have missed some things.

Another issue I have with the mixing is that I have a pair of headphones and a pair of earphones, and none of them are really made for mixing (it was supposed to be a temporary solution when my previous headphones decided to give up). I usually listen on both, but when I'm on a project for that long, I begin to forget the characteristics of the device I'm working on. When I begin to notice that, I usually stop working on the track for some days, in order to avoid messing up all the mix. That's part of why I submitted it only yesterday, even if the composition itself was already finished ten days ago.

About the structure, it really was a choice to keep the same tone and pace all along - I really thought this one as a music reflecting a single ambiance, without going too far from its starting point.

Thank you again for your review ! :)

Awesome work Ylmir :) Kind of gives me a little Metal Gear Solid vibe at some parts (especially that bass!) This would go very well for a menu.
