"Souds like..."

Does not sound like anything Harry Potter but it totally sounds like the lind of musioc Danny Elfman would write. Still pretty cool.

"Great!"

date: October 26, 2006

It's a really great track: well composed, variated structure and above that well instrumented. Great harp apperigator - I loved it.

The whole song brought a kind of Halloweenish feeling for me - a haunted house came to my mind for this one rather than a forest. Bot it's still a great piece and I think it's even better that you haven't used the full orchestra for this - it makes the feeling of the song more ... classical.

So great job! 5/5 from me!

Author's Response:

Danke! :D

Full orchestras can be overwhelming sometimes, I always like working small and adding as I go. If you compose for a smaller group of instruments, you get to know each instrument better and that helps a lot in orchestral composition.

But before I break down into lectures, thanks a ton for the review!

"Great instrumentation"

by: Esn
date: October 25, 2006

I just love the instrumentation in this piece - could I please know which instruments it was written for?

Every instrument was distinct, and it had a magical Nutcracker-opera-like feeling... kinda like the first snowfall.

This would make a great soundtrack for a game, and it also seems perfect for any Christmas flashes on Newgrounds that might want to use it - have you thought of entering that audio contest?

I don't have too much criticism, I'm afraid. I give a "9" because the piece simply isn't too ambitious - it's a little simple, but that's ok. It's great just the way it is.

P.S. Just a suggestion to avoid the confusion - instead of saying "this is a piece from x.com" say "this is a piece FOR x.com". I admit that even I wasn't sure what to think, until I saw your response to the guy below.

Author's Response:

Your absolutely right in your suggestion, the phrasing was very open to misinterpretation. My apologies about that. I reacted strongly to the review below, but on a certain level I maintain that to make such an accusation publicly one must delve deeper.

But with that aside, this was written for:
Glockenspiel
Harp (2)
Violin
Cello
Double bass
(all GPO)

Hmmm never thought about putting it in the MAC tho. For some reason I'm just not feeling particularly inspired to submit to the MAC.

Generally speaking this was a pretty idle piece, the phrases and dynamics work on a more microscopic scale, and the instrumentation is limited and not exploited fully. Nevertheless, what redeemed this piece in my eyes the most was its harmonic complexity in numerous parts (such as harp arpeggios on the third instance of the first melody). The harmonies were subtle touches when placed in this kind of dreamy, Nutcracker-y (as you mentioned) style, but always fun to experiment with.

Anyhoo, sorry about the tangents, thanks for the awesome review. :P
