NGADM 14 - Semi Finals
___________________

Hey guys,

here is our submission for the semi-finals of the NGADM. it is very different from what we have done so far and we hope you´ll like it, as much as we did making it.
.
To explore the concept of right or wrong, we tried to introduce variety to sections that could have been simple repetitions. You will be able to find melodic twists for similar harmonic content or even rhythmic variations of this content, with different time signatures, subdivisions, etc. We wanted that all these things would happen in a subtle way, so that the piece would still resemble a song that one could easilly hum along, tap their feet, headbang or even sing it in the shower :D
.
This piece ends as it would have a question mark, reenforcing the concept and posing the question to the listener,
is this right or wrong?
.
Lyrics of Right or Wrong:
____________________
Saying yes or no
is it better than saying nothing?
should we make our rules
and let them guide our inner purpose?
.
what is there to find?
everyone does it so I presume its right
what is there to hide?
.
Right or wrong,
this unshakeable feeling inside
is it right or wrong
if you only believe in yourself
is this right or wrong?
.
what is it that you can´t follow
is there such a thing?
the ebb and flow of thoughts and sorrow
for not getting everything
.
what is there to find?
everyone does it so I presume its right
what is there to hide?
.
Right or wrong,
this unshakeable feeling inside
is it right or wrong
if you only believe in yourself
is this right or wrong?
.
why this uneasiness,
this aching sense of morality?
discriminated, between fame and infamy
opportunities, here and there
ready to be taken
faced with choices
your inner voices
should we follow them?
.
Right or wrong,
this unshakeable feeling inside
is it right or wrong
if you only believe in yourself
is this right or wrong?
.
.
We hope you guys liked our piece and thank you a lot for listening. Honest reviews and votes are always highly appreciated! Plz keep the Fingers crossed for us - THE GRAND FINALE IS NEAR!!!.

Wow, this is a great track! I wanted to nitpick, but everyone who's already reviewed this has brought up everything I would.

4.5/5. Dang good, but mixing is hard, man >A<

This is golden. The vocals sound perfect for the genre.

This song sounds like something that would play right before a really tough boss battle in a game or maybe an anime when things are getting incredibly tense.

The whole sound is just gorgeous to my ears and the guitar riffs are great. Really love the vibrations coming from this song.

Overall, nothing short of beautiful. <3

This is just gold, and something entirely new from you guys. I can tell you were really exploring a lot with this piece, and you went to so many different places with it – ended up sounding amazing. Your mix is just a little muddy, but the production value overall is mindblowing. The guitars sound freakin’ amazing! I so wish I had your skills, envious to the Nines! Love the chords and progressions that you chose.
The chorus is extremely memorable and I’ve had the song on repeat because I love singing along with it! Right in my range. The vocals sound wonderful, and you did a great job mixing them; the harmonies add a very nice layer to the track, too, so well done!
That guitar solo, though… Simply awesome. I just sit there with my mouth open every time I hear it.
I really wish the song had ended on a different note – that is, maybe a more drawn out note? It seems like you ran with the solo, only to run into a brick wall. I can see where you might have run out of time; just would have liked to hear it extended or given some closure! :)
Excellent vocals, my gosh. You have an excellent compressor on them, and it really works nicely and evens out the flow of the guitar. Percussion sounds great as well, I’m digging the cymbals on either side of the stereo. Well done!
Conclusively, I should not be surprised that you guys can just pull off any genre you go for – such wonderful composers and I’m thrilled to see what other music you might make together! This is a great piece and it’s cool to see some major branching out.

thought this was piratecrab when i first heard it. how did that happen? :v

this kind of sounds like sevendust doing prog. vocals are fantastically delivered, the drums have that perfect groove metal flow and are really thoughtfully programmed and the bass and guitars always sit at a really nice volume. the overall mix is a little too dark though - i think the guitar and snare need a bit more presence around that 5K-8K area and less mids. vocals have been too heavily de-essed, kind of unclear sometimes - also kinda mono sounding even with the reverb so maybe give it some more width cause you want vocals to p-p-POP.

the pre-choruses need a bit more instrumental time to gel into the choruses properly. the thing about consecutive time signature changes and polyrhythms is that they get super messy when vocals are involved. typically when prog bands do vocals over odd-meter stuff it's usually kept relatively simple, and when it gets hairy the instrumental follows the lyrics rather than the opposite, which is what i felt was happening here in those pre-choruses. other than that it's all well composed imo

also, the render cuts off before the ride cymbal rings out properly. this sort of thing has happened a whole lot during this NGADM and it's one of my musical pet peeves haha

NGADM Round 4 Review

-----

Can you guys get any more diverse with your musical approach? I mean seriously, I am baffled by how much variety you two have brought to the competition. This was yet another pleasant surprise, in a line full of surprises!

In terms of the overall rock instrumentation, the guitar playing, percussion, all of that is great – but I really want to focus on the vocals for a bit here: they are awesome! Hitokirito (am I right in saying that he sang?) did a wonderful job. He has an excellent 'rock' (almost grunge) voice, which he uses with precision throughout the track. However, there are times when the vocals do sound a bit dry and strained. Oh, and I must say that the lyrics are well-written, too. In fact, the chorus has memorable lyrics (I was singing them myself while writing this review haha)! To go back to the guitar and drums, I really enjoyed listening to the guitar solos throughout, as they were able to mix up the typical pattern that the song was following. The drums did their job well, and added a splash of intensity which really pumped me up!

Not to beat a dead horse, but the mix is well...it isn't bad, but it is certainly muddy and unclear. The lead guitar in particular seems to dominate the track, whereas the drums and the rhythm guitar tend to sit in the background more. On occasion, the vocals are also phased out by the guitar and if there hadn't been lyrics posted with the track, I would have been confused as to what was being sung (1:22 – 1:34). My only other complaint is that I feel as if I have heard this track before. By that I mean that it is teetering closely on the edge of being a little too generic. Obviously, there is some fantastic instrumentation going on here, but I can't shake that feeling, you know? Either way though, the song as a whole has a special 'Sound-Hito' vibe to it that I really appreciate!

I am more than impressed once again. Keep it up, you guys! :D
