This is my entry to the first round of this years NGADM.

I've been feeling super crappy recently, so I did this song over about two days. For a while I didn't think I'd be able to submit at all. Then I tried to write how I felt into a song. That kinda worked.

Even now though, I think any of the talented members from my group could just steamroll. Still, I'm happy with what I made.

I wanted to do a mixup of post rock with electronic elements.

I hope you like it.

Thanks to Misael.K, NickC, etherealwinds and skyewint for listening and giving me their thoughts. And thanks to the judges for putting on this contest.

This is an NGADM Round 1 Review:

-----

This song made me feel warm inside! I just feel energized and good about everything when listening to it. You have a real way with blending synths and other instruments together. Your tracks almost have this kind of ‘rainbow’ effect; everything blends together to create something colourful and imaginative! Within the first 25 seconds into the song, I knew I was going to be in for a melodious experience. The melodies in this track are really something else. You’re some kind of musical wizard...aren't you? Anyway, you have set up a very atmospheric introduction which extends throughout the entire song. You manage to pull a lot of emotion from the synths in particular, especially around 3:30 and 4:00, and then again 5:06. Powerful is perhaps the best word to describe it. The way you build the song is fantastic, if not a bit slow at first (but I’ll get to that later)!

I only have two minor gripes: the progression in the first half of the song, and the mix towards the end. A progression that builds more in the first 2-3 minutes would be much more appealing, and a conclusion (among various other parts of the track) that offers a clean, tidy mix would take this track from awesome, to super saiyan awesome. The first 2 minutes of the song are wonderful, but the true pace takes a while to kick into full gear. Don’t get me wrong, I love the progression, it’s quite smooth – but seems drawn-out in the beginning. Things don’t really pick up until 2:24. From 3:29-4:10 there is some overlapping between the synths. They all sound cluttered together, which kind of drowns out the drums just slightly.

All I can see to wrap this up is this: please never stop making music. Great stuff, looking forward to your next entry! :D

In some parts it reminds me of the Solar 2 OST tracks, various synths, blends of atmospheric sounds and metallic plucks. I adore the light hearted feel to this, and it progresses very well, without much repetition with flawless conjunction of melodies. I love the drum beat, has a nice rhythm and drags you in to the world you created even deeper. For some reason, it is a very nostalgic feeling for me, it almost hits home. Brilliant composition, my friend.

Thanks! Hum, I've never listened to that soundtrack before, but perhaps I'll have to check it out. I'm glad you liked my song :-)

Great synth sounds. I like panning echo of the bells, and how the parameters change over time. Makes electronic sounds come to life. The blown up lead sounds very emotional. The drums sound pretty good as well. They perfectly support the song and fit the mix. I like the atmosphere of the song. I think it would fit the end credits of a futuristic film, or a scene where they play a full song with some self explanatory shots, like a video clip.

johnfn responds:

Man I get that my music sounds like ending credits music a lot! I wonder why... it must be because its kinda chill and upbeat or something, I dunno. Anyways, thanks for the review.

It's good to see that you made it on to the next round. I don't think I'll get the chance to directly compete against you (I don't know why but I decided to make you my benchmark for my first trip in a NGADM contest).

All that aside, I'm really glad to hear this. The first half of this is just an excellent display of your ability to make beautiful atmospheres, and then the song really just blossoms at 03:30. It's really cool how you take a synth that sounds like it isn't meant to be soothing but you make it turn it around and make the piece sublime.

Be awesome, be more awesome, and repeat.
And good luck

Thanks Spadezer! I really enjoy your entries too, they use standard instruments in really unexpected and nonstandard ways.

I'm glad you liked it! Gonna go attempt to be more awesome now.
