There's two ways you can read into this one.

The first is it's a storysong and the first half represents the mundane everyday depressing world, and the second half represents escaping from it, however you decided to do that. For me it would be taking a walk in nature.

The other is that I jumped in over my head, got confused, and gave up halfway to do something else. :D

I guess April is drum month! I know last month was technically drum month too but I didn't feel like they got enough emphasis. I found this amazing and free acoustic drum pack that I used to make all my drums out of one shots. After being lazy for the longest time by just chopping up loops it feels pretty good to have more control! Plus I think they just sound better.

Also I used another lead just for SkyeWintrest [[ insert less than three symbol here ]] although it still sounds pretty similar to my other leads... lol. I wanted to really make it unique, but Ableton was kinda going insane (tons of clipping and lag whenever I would try to play) so I decided I'd try to get it out of the door quickly.

Sound design month is next maybe. haha

Cool

I like this but especially love when that piano really kicks in and it seems to really stablize after that the piano is nice, I love the effort you have put fourth here A good track you have here some good tid bits here, the piano is nice in this piece

~X~

This is interesting...very interesting. The strong beat and strange energetic qualities don't usually categorize this as ambient, but it is very atmospheric in a way. I love all the quirky effects toward the beginning, as well as the dark mood which is very uncharacteristic for many recent tracks of yours. The rapid transition between moods at 1:41 with the piano really caught me off guard. I think you either need to a) incorporate more elements of the first half of the piece into the second part very soon after the 1:41 transition or b) cut the part from 1:12 to 1:41 (or otherwise make it a part of :00 to 1:12) or c) all of the above. That said, I love the melodies later in the piece, especially at 3:25, but I still think you have two completely different songs here, Johnfn. I liked the ending, though. I think you could stand to work on this one a lot more, but it's mostly just structural details. Overall, it's pretty good. Keep at it, Johnfn! ;)

Aww nice one!! ^^

johnfn responds:

Yay thanks!

The first half is what I enjoyed the most here and I would have liked to hear you develop that a bit more. Just a minute and a half? Awww. I wouldn't have used mundane or depressing to describe it either, but the idea of making something a means for an escape away from what you would describe is interesting to me. Though, I would have liked more of a journey between the two, I still enjoyed it. Since you’re an optimist, how about a month of you experimenting with more darker sounds or being more sorrowful in your compositions?

johnfn responds:

MWA HA now I have done so! Just for you! Actually, I did so like a week or two ago, but whatever. It is actually quite difficult for me to write really dark material. I'm not sure why... it just doesn't vibe very well with my personality or something. Though now that I think about it, I've written some dark stuff in the past. Maybe I'm just making up excuses! haha

Thanks for the review!

What instrument is that big panning divebomb thing? Sounds like a guitar??

johnfn responds:

Eh it's just a pitch dropping saw iirc. I put some reverb and lfo vibrato on it.
