The ending is just there because I wanted it to end. So it's like... Temporary, but it might not be temporary since some seem to like it.

Second submission for the contest. I wasn't sure whether I'd be be able to make another one in time, but I asked a friend to find a piece of art for me to draw inspiration from. He picked this one by gugo78, which I really like myself:

It has some nice parts I think. I'm still very unexperienced in cinematic, and just orchestral instruments in general. The samples I'm using might be a reason for the lacking quality, but I've tried my best. I kinda like the percussion.

It's all made in Reason 5. The choirs are from the Miroslav Choir Refill.

I've included a part of the melody from my first A.I.M submission as well if you can hear it :3

Honest reviews are nice.

Have a nice day.

EDIT: Did some adjustments. Lowered the volume on the clicky thingys, and added harp on some places. It's a tad bit more variation. Also added a trumpet to one part, but it's kinda screamy...

Wao !!!!!

It's a really good piece with plenty of atmosphere, an enjoyable structure and a catchy melody that kinda stretches for a while. While I praise the unintentional nostalgia factor for it reminded me of the good old Dark Cloud days, but most importantly the cinematic depth you've provided, I can tell you what could have made it even more cinematic.

First of all more variation on the theme would have been nice. While the melody is very nice and engaging, I think that introducing more instruments, counter-melodies and background ambiances would have made it more interesting and refreshing. I don't actually have complaints for the ending and I think it fits the atmosphere well, if probably for the fact that it comes a bit abruptly, so perhaps smoothing that transition would have improved the flow of the piece.

If this is your first try at cinematic I'd say it's a very good start! Remember that anything can sound "cinematic" and immersive if you just let the sounds slowly build their way, and leave them enough breathing space in the mix. In fact I think dynamics are pretty tight in this song because the atmosphere is already quite massive and it doesn't really leave room for other instruments (even background sounds) to take place.

Overall, I say good job and keep improving in this direction

Mawnz responds:

Hi! You judges are really going all out on this, which I think we all love to see. It is much appreciated.

It's not my first cinematic piece (I think), but I don't really know much about the genre in terms of composing so.
So as you say: anything can sound cinematic. I've never thougt about that...
Anyway thank you for taking you time to listen and give constructive feedback! I find it intriguing to experiment in this genre, and I'm gonna improve!

Love the mood that the choires sets! Really fits the art! And awesome to hear you are using Reason! The best software out there ! ;)

Mawnz responds:

Hey, thanks man I appreciate that! Yea I think Reason works best for me to work in.

i liked it. however, i think you need to embrace your instruments more. what i mean, is to add some more electronicy sounding synths over the real ones, because your samples aren't the best (no offense). that way, it sounds more intentional as opposed to fake. i mostly do pure orchestral, but i LOVE when i add synths because i can make it sound how it's meant to sound as opposed to as good as i can give you.

also, i really think you need to change up the drums a little. maybe at some point have everything but the bass drums drop out. music is highly dependent on a diversity of dynamics, and it makes the bigger parts sound bigger. sometimes it's better to have a lot less to set up the impact of your "featured parts."

either way, super cool.

Mawnz responds:

Thank you for the feedback, it is much appreciated! I am aware of the lack of quality when it comes to my samples. I'm just using what I have in Reason 5, and it's not really known for being that great.

Thanks for the tip regarding dynamics and adding more synths to fill up the space.

I'm taking notes of what you've written so I can improve! Good stuff! :D

I liked your first submission to the contest. I like this even more! I love the atmosphere it creates, the mixing sounds great to me and it fits the art nicely.

I would like to see more progression in your pieces as they seem lose their appeal quite fast as they are, though I guess it's more a matter of personal preference than advice you should take seriously. But because of this I end up liking the ending a lot as well even though it comes kind of suddenly and is different than the rest of the song.

Keep up the good work, earned yourself a new fan! :)

Mawnz responds:

Glad to hear! Thanks for listening and leaving a review :D

I'm usually for having more variation, but since I'm kinda unexperienced in cinematics I don't play around as much with melodies I guess. It's like... I don't really know how to go about having nice transitions, adding new elements to the song without disturbing the flow :p

I'll see if I can add some more variation today!

Thanks again! :D
