Music Tech track #2! This was made mostly from December 2013 to January 2014 in Garageband 6. It took me way too long to make: probably upwards of 12 hours. It was a big experiment with a lot of weird effects/instruments in Garageband. I wanted it to sound creepy, but I'm afraid it just sounds clashing instead. Stylistically, it was inspired by Step & Echo's "Encapsulation," probably my favorite ambient track of 2013. This track, though, just has too much variety and an extreme lack of melodic development. It also sounds really crappy without headphones. Thanks for bearing with me during my weird experiments, guys! :D Somehow this song convinced me to upload it. I'm still not sure if I love it or I hate it. You decide! ;D

Alright, other reviewer's have covered mostly the things, but not all of them. I am such such a huge fan of the atmosphere and the darker turns that the sounds take. It's not LSD or mushrooms. Haha it's just a cool way to emotionally make music with a darker take. It explores the parts of the mind that are kinda hard to exist in. Anyway I'm ranting. Really like this one.

Thanks again! I remember being really unsure whether this was a good track or not when I first uploaded it, so I'm glad you like it. ^_^

I lurve this song! It started off super creepy and then turned a little sad in the middle (which is not at all a bad thing). I love the melody at 2:14 and the organ parts (so pretty much the whole thing haha). Definitely nailed the ambiance!

A little off topic, but I honestly have no idea how I found this song. I swear that I just woke up from an unfortunate evening nap at my desk, and it was playing already. Like wtf is my computer haunted? Did someone hax me? Do I sleep-browse through Newgrounds or something? (Don't know why you'd care, but I just wanted to tell someone because it really freaked me out)

Anyways, I'm glad that I found this because I love the song! Keep up the good work, and I hope to see more from you in the future! I'm off to explore the rest of your stuff! Have a good day! (>w<)/

TaintedLogic responds:

Thanks so much for the review! I LOVE unexpected reviews! :D I'm glad you liked the melodies and organ parts. Hopefully I'll be able to make more atmospheric tracks soon. Haha, that's really creepy how it just started playing like that! XD It has a mind of its own... >:D I really appreciate all the positive feedback, though! Thanks again! ;D I'll definitely have more time to post tracks because I'm out of school for the summer now. ^^

I see that LSD has already covered all the major points, so I'll be sticking to nitpicks in this review.

Personally, I enjoy the organ drops at 1:07 and 3:07, but I wish you'd made the pad playing beneath it stop as well for a more whole effect. If half the instruments suddenly stop and half keep going, it sounds quite strange, but if they all stop, it can be quite effective.

The bell sounds you used are also a bit weird. I know Garageband quite well; I use it to make all my music. You can easily make the bell sounds more realistic if you go to the Edit Instrument tab and adjust the Tuning. Speaking of editing sounds, I think the organ could have had a lower attack, as in ambient music, sudden sounds aren't the wisest idea.

I loved the part where things all started coming in at 0:39. I wish you'd kept some of those instruments around, though. They sounded very nice with the song.

This may not have much melodic development, but for an ambient track, it's very well made. Good job!

TaintedLogic responds:

Thank you very much, LunacyEcho! :D I agree with your comments about the drops. I hadn't thought of that! I only started using GarageBand again a few months ago for the misic tech class I'm taking at my high school. I really appreciate the advice about fixing the bell, although in a way I wanted this piece to sound as weird as possible! >:D I am glad you liked the progression, and I agree I could've avoided changing everything so quickly. I'll think about that in the future! Thanks LunacyEcho! ;D

I'll let you in on a secret, I love ambient tracks :D

I don't know if I'd say it's too random, since music like this often uses the element of surprise and things you don't expect in order to create a more creepy mood.

This might actually be my favorite track of yours so far, but probably because of how much I like darker music :D

There are many good things about this track, but I especially like the chords and melodies, a.k.a. the composition and arrangement. However, I have a couple of issues with the mixing and/or the instruments.

First of, when that organ enters at 1:07, I think it's both too loud and too sudden. I do however think that it would very much fit into the song otherwise; it's simply too distracting right now since it takes over everything else. Maybe if you lowered it's volume slightly, and made its entrance less sudden (you could tune it in more).

Also, when the organ sound disappears at 1:52, I have the very same issue. The change is simply too sudden and too big. Other than that, I love the song. It would really be perfect backround music for an eerie game. I do love all the weird effects, and the echo on some instruments as well as the reverb. I think you're definitely progressing fast!

Btw, when the organ re-enters around 2:45, I think you did a much better job (it sounds like you made everything else louder too?). However, the disappearance at 3:07 was too quick again.

Lastly, since this is an ambient track that could very well be used as backround music, I would have tried making it into a loop, since that always tends to work well unless the song has too much of a climax!

Otherwise, this is much better than anything ambient I could create with a DAW, so great job ;)

The name is perfect in my opinion! Aside from being so sudden and loud, the organ really made me feel like I was in an empty church, with something creepy and out of this world within it!

TaintedLogic responds:

Thank you so much, LucidShadowDreamer! :D I love ambient tracks too! It's really easy to get away with using ugly-sounding chords on an organ! ;D I thought I emphasized the atmospheric content more than the melodic content, but I'm glad you liked the melodies anyway. I agree about the sudden organ entrances. At first I even had made it louder. XD I need to learn to be less melodramatic. ;) I'm not sure I like making loops that much. I usually only use them when I can't think of a way to end the piece. I'm glad you liked the title though. Thanks again :D
