This is a very simple song I composed and recorded 11 months ago. I wrote (in a secret place) that it took about one hour to make, which makes sense considering that the second half is pretty much a loop of the first half, although more complicated. There are no VSTi involved, only the sounds of my Yamaha Clavinova (CLP - 230).

This is the original recording, but for this Newgrounds version I tried adding some reverb and such using Cubase. I really had a tough time knowing whether I succeeded or not; I still do (I had a friend decide if I should upload this version or the raw recording).
You can help me with this: if you want to check out the "original" version without edited sounds, go Here.

I'd appreciate it if anyone could give me tips on how to improve the sound of older recordings, or actually any general tips at all. Keep it coming! (I tried using Up Stereo to boost the sound a bit - for good and for bad).

I realize that this isn't really the kind of music you normally see on Newgrounds, but I don't really think that matters. This is as mentioned, an older song, but you can still review it if you feel up for the task. I will keep uploading older stuff every now and then :D

PS. This is once of those songs that sounds better the lower the volume is, since you can't hear the mistakes and other issues as easily.

I like watching the CD pic thing spin with visualizations off in the display part because when it spins, it looks like a basic impressionist sunset mixed with the Ukrainian flag. :P

This is a beautiful piece, the best one you've uploaded so far (even if you did write it nearly a year ago). You said that it was a MIDI file, so in future songs such as this, do you think you could set the notes to a steadier tempo? I'm not sure if that works in other softwares, but it's a pretty basic musicmaking technique, so it probably should be in there somewhere.

I think you could have added a bit more transition into 0:46. Since that's where the song's second part comes in, perhaps you could have included some simple, quiet drums, like a kick on every 1 and a hi-hat on every 2 and 3, if you don't have that much experience with drums. Just a thought.

The melodies and instruments are great. I think this one sounds a lot "fresh"er that the one you have a link to in your description. If you got some more VSTs, I'd love to hear what you could do with those, if this is what you can do with just an electric piano!

Great work! If you step up your production, I could really see you going far. (Although that sort of dedication generally requires one less military commitment... :/)

Heyyyyyyy! Thanks for the review dude :p
I make my CD pictures very randomy in pretty much 1 minute each, but I'm glad you like it :D

Yeah, well. This in it self is not a MIDI file, but my electronic piano always saves it as a MIDI file when you record a song. So yeah, it is possible to edit the file in a DAW and then run the MIDI file through the piano once more. However, at the time I didn't have any audio software, and now the MIDI file is nowhere to be found D:

You are right, there is a lot that could be added to this. I actually just made it quite spontaneously though, but that's no real excuse... I should really train on my percussion skills too -_-

I'm glad you like the melodies in this one, as well as the instruments, even if the production value isn't that high! If I ever take time to learn how to play this composition again, I might just remake it sometime :) (I do need to get some better VSTs though, but not right now, because I don't really have time to use them D:).

I'm glad that you see potential in me. I'm also pleased to see I didn't completely ruin the song with my lacking mixing skills! I will slowly but surely try to step up my production skills!

Believe me, I don't really want to go to the military :p
But in my country there is no real choice, unless you want to work for basically no payment for 14 months. 14 MONTHS. So I choose the military which is much shorter ;)

I love the instruments and mood. It's beautiful! :D Those melodies are excellent, and it has a very calming atmosphere to it. I love the progression and transitions, too. It reminds me a lot of snow instead of a stroll on the beach, but maybe that's because there's so much of it right now in Boston! XD Anyway, again, it has a beautifully constructed atmosphere to it. The ending seemed a bit sudden, though, and it might need some more dynamic contrast. Other than that, great job! Keep at it, man! ;D

Thank you!
You know, I've been thinking about reviewing some of your work for a couple of days now, I just haven't yet got to it. Now I'm definitely going to do that soon ;)

I actually still like this one too, even if I have no clue how to play it anymore; I lost the MIDI file. I could always listen to it enough to learn it again, since it's pretty simple (and rooted somewhere deep in my subconscious). Some transitions actually switch the entire key for a short while which I almost always do in my compositions, it has become a weird habit.

Yeah, I understand what you mean with the snow, I can see many different images while listening to this.

"The ending seemed a bit sudden, though, and it might need some more dynamic contrast"

=> You are definitely right. I originally intended to only do the first half of the song. Then I continued without using any more creative thinking, thus I only replayed what I'd already done... I should still have come up with a proper ending. Dynamics have never been one of my strong sides, but I will try to improve in that area as well.

Once again, thanks for this review. And you were fast! You reviewed this only a couple of minutes after I uploaded it XD
