- Second Round submission for the 2013 Newgrounds Audio Deathmatch -

Edit: After listening to the original purely instrumental track of Tir na nOg, Jordi Francis (etherealwinds) suggested adding some vocals. I had already been thinking about this myself, and after listening to and reviewing his Round 1 submission, Blind Maiden I was thrilled at the thought of having his vocals accompany my music. Long story short, that's precisely what we did. If you've already listened to the song previously, you may need to clear your cache and restart your browser to hear the new and improved version.

Tir na nOg is an Otherworldly location of Celtic myth. The Old Irish, Tír inna n-Óc, quite literally translates to "Land of the Young." This is merely my own musical interpretation of this legendary realm, and is intended to be both energetic and mysterious as it tells the tale of the ageless ones, and the few mortals who ever dared set foot upon its hallowed shores.

The instruments and music are mostly in the vein of Traditional Celtic, plus a few more modern additions, mostly of the percussive variety on the instrument side. SoundFonts every one of them, since that is what I have to work with, but I feel that the quality is quite good regardless. I hope that you agree.

Probably my favorite piece from Chrono! Everything is just so RIGHT about this piece. Jordi's vocals are as wonderful as ever ^-^

ChronoNomad responds:

Huzzah! Many, many thanks for that. ^__^

Yeah, I can't help but love the heck out of this piece, myself. It was also a ton of fun to make! I'd be curious to see what you think of an older piece that I did, and my most popular track by far (for some bizarre reason), Forever Fantasy.

This is by far my favorite. I get lost in a story with this music and I forget where I'm sitting, what I was doing, and my creativity begins to churn, I ache to write!

I love it when music becomes my muse......

Well done!

ChronoNomad responds:

Aw, very much appreciated. Thank you so much for the review, Katla. By all means, let the music inspire you to writing greatness! Allow Euterpe to be your guide...

This is an NGADM Round 2 Review.

What an interesting piece!

Things that I liked:
-Unique choice of instruments.
-This takes me back to my gaming days!
-I really like the percussion you use. Very effective in making this feel medieval.
-You're not confined to any specific chord progressions, which is great.
-The panning harp sound is really cool.
-Those vocals are great!

What could have been better:
-While this is a unique track, there are a lot of generic elements to it.
-The samples you use work in this instance, but increasing your sample quality would really take this to the next level.
-The flute is nice, but overused.
-I would like to have seen a larger climax.

Overall this is a fantastic track and I greatly enjoyed listening to it. You make some great music, and the incorporation of etherealwinds' vocals was a good choice. Great job!

Score: 8/10

ChronoNomad responds:

Don't you mean...8.3/10? xD Stuff happens; no harm, no foul. Thanks for the review, BFJ! You like a lot of aspects of this particular piece, and that makes me happy. It was certainly a lot of fun to make, and I think that manages to shine through. You also offer up some very solid points regarding what could have been better, though not much by way of suggestion. Of course that's part of the journey. Probably just needs more cowbell. ;)

I'm personally very content with the way this turned out, and EW's contribution is like the icing on the cake. I'll definitely view Tir Na Nog as my biggest accomplishment in this contest, and it seems primed to continue as my 'best of' submission throughout the remainder of 2013. ^_^

First off, I really dig the fact that you're using SoundFonts. So many people believe that SoundFonts don't have good quality, but your piece here just goes to prove otherwise, so awesome job!

Don't know how well you know your RPGs, but this sounds exactly like the game Wild Arms, it's got a nice cultural, celtic feeling going for it, and still keeps a sweet rhythm. Love it.

ChronoNomad responds:

Thanks, nUMBRA! I'm always happy to prove people wrong. ^_~ I have heard plenty of terrible SoundFonts in my hunt for good ones, so there can definitely be quite a disparity from one to the next.

I do indeed know my RPGs fairly well, and Wild ARMs is a series that I am well familiar with. Even though the difference in style from Western to Celtic is so distinct, guitar-like strums can still often sound very similar. You should check out my other songs: Gunslinger and The Gunslinger Returns! They're at least partially inspired by those games and classic Spaghetti Westerns. :D

Hi.

The Good:
-I'm loving the cultural vibe, along with all the pitch-bent trills and sounds.
-Panning is well-done with the harp and other panned instruments. Try panning some a bit more subtly rather than have it always be fully panned. :)
-Harmonic lines are also very well-done, I like it.
-Vocals are good, of course.
-Great overall composition, I like the form.

The Not-So-Good:
-The section from about 0:30-1:16 is a tad long without too much variation, I think by this part the guitar should have changed from doing the chords to doing something else.
-Some transitions are a tad bit rough, though overall they're good.

Overall: Score of 8.5/10. This is a well-composed and awesome-sounding piece of music and I like it a lot. <3 Try having more variation within each section and letting instruments do different things.

ChronoNomad responds:

Greetings, Skye! Thanks for the shiny new review; it is very much appreciated.

I like that even in The Good you offer some nice suggestions to improve the panning. I lean more towards natural-sounding pans, such as where an instrument would be in an orchestra and so on, but I also love getting creative in this regard. There's a happy medium in there somewhere, and I'll keep trying to nail it down. I'm quite pleasantly surprised that the Celtic vibe has been so well received! This is also the first review I've gotten that specifically mentions the way that I used pitch bending for all those fun little trills, so thank you for that. :D

Aw, I love how you avoid the word bad and simply say The Not-So-Good. Unfortunately, that also precludes my ability to make a humorously relevant 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' reference...but I digress. I can't say that I disagree with anything you've said here, and - in perfect 20/20 hindsight - I do rather wish that I had varied the cister strums with some other form of attack; possibly with slower arpeggiated chords to complement the faster harp arpeggios. Ah, well. Live and learn.

Thank you again for all the great feedback and suggestions, and I'm glad to have you aboard as a judge! Also, every single time I see your name it makes me think of Austin Wintory. Random factoid is random. Ta!
