Here it is! My submission for round 1 of the NGADM '13!

This one took me a while to finish since I was struggling to find a style that I liked and once the song went off in a certain direction, I came to it the following day and realised I didn't like it and started over. Rinse and repeat the following day. Some ideas came and went but I think the overall result came out pretty well :D

It may seem a little minimalistic compared to my other stuff but it's actually one of my biggest tracks to date! I tried some different mastering techniques as well as experiment with sounds I haven't tried before, so I'm pretty happy with it :)

It's really motivating to be accepted in this years NGADM and I'm happy I could take part! Good luck to the other contenders and wish me luck too!.. I'm ugh... gonna need it. :D

- NGADM Round 1 Review -

Very cool feel, right from the start. Very exciting, and the mood is just very upbeat and awesome. The light slowdown at 2:45 is very nicely timed, as well as the re-introduction to the main melody at 3:06 although at 3:06 the attempt to bring back the excitement was not as effective, possibly due to the overuse of certain elements that are heard quite a few times throughout the song. The mixing also has some issues in terms of getting a good, clear sound. Overall, this is a very solid track.

Score: 8

I'm loving that "video game boss" feel right from the start. You seem to always have a very well-defined idea of how you're going to make a track before you even start despite what you said in the author's comments (I've noticed this in your other music too), because stylistically from beginning to end this is simple, sensible, and easily reminiscent of something you'd hear in a video game. You've got some really great ideas over here, including some perfectly enjoyable melodies, and some subtle details (like that understated melody on the square lead at 2:41 and the bitcrusher/phaser on the drums) that really bring this track together. The structure is also more or less nailed and once we get to the ending it feels like a very satisfying and well-rounded journey. Great work.

On the contrary, there are a bunch of glaring issues in this track that take away from the listening experience. The mix isn't great. It needs to be more spacious, because a lot of the time this track suffers from an unfortunate muddiness or a cluttered overall sound. This is pretty much the main problem with this track, but there are a few other more minor problems. I don't think the foreground strings fit very well with the rest of the track (along with the fact that they don't sound great themselves). The percussion has a good sound but it needs even more subtle variations because it sometimes feels very much like you made the one-bar pattern and pasted it a bunch of times. Also, I think you overuse certain elements at times, like reverse cymbals/sweeps, and that "leading note to tonic" melodic phrase. Remember, use something too much and it loses its effect!

Anyhow, this is a perfectly enjoyable track with awesome ideas and composition. Some stuff to work on, but otherwise I was impressed!

Score: 7.8/10

Lovely track once again, has a quality I have come to expect from you. It's the subtle bits that make it for me, you can barely hear them, but if they were taken away it would change the track.

DuttonsaysHi responds:

Thanks! I do try ^^ I'm really glad you noticed the subtle elements! Like the percussion being bit-crushed in and out of existence, the thick buzzing bass layered with the FM bass and the step-sequenced synth panning from ear to ear just to name a few xP The subtle elements where pretty much a main focus for this track so I'm happy you noticed ^^

Good song. Pity for the low score, it deserves more. I like the mastering very much! Also those orchestra hits are awesome in this song. Catchy as hell :3 Good luck vs headphoamz (it was her, right?) :D

DuttonsaysHi responds:

Thank you! and yeah I'm pretty sure somebody within the contest is zero bombing since the other contestants scores seem to be suffering, despite having great submissions. Not many people have voted so not too much damage done I suppose :P there's still chance to bump my score up.

Yeah and thanks again! I'm kinda nervous since she hasn't posted anything since the auditions. So I'll either be facing against nobody or she'll come out last minute and wipe the floor with me Dx.
