NGAP 10TH ANNIVERSARY CONTEST REVIEW
This is such an incredible track compared to the original that it's actually hilarious. Even on its own, this is one hell of an incredible track.
The atmosphere is nailed. The intro is just spine-chilling, and when the vocals come in, it truly becomes an extremely dark and captivating experience. This track has the ability to encapsulate the listener in its grasp and keep him/her under the spell until the very end, and then leave him/her thinking about it even after the track is finished. And halfway through it turns into a metal track with excellent guitar-playing! That was entirely unexpected, even if hints of it were thrown in at 2:14 (which were wonderfully subtle, great job). The vocals overall added a disturbing element to the track and the voice acting is just excellent. I don't know where you got those vocals from or if you made them yourself though.
It is incredibly hard to find anything to point out that I didn't like. This is just fantastic. I can only mention miniscule little faults that are probably personal preference. The ending, for me, felt a bit too uneventful for an ending. Perhaps add some echo/reverb to the vocals, especially for the last word, so it rings a bit more before the track ends. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the mixing in the metal part. The cymbals sound a bit thin and the rest of the drums sound a bit flat. These are all slight nuisances that don't really deduct from your score that much.
I consider this one of the best submissions in the contest. Truly well done!
Thank you so much, this is an incredible review. :)
Yes, I did perform the vocals myself as I couldn't get any voice actors to read those lines and so I had to stick with my fat performance. People liked it, I'm pretty content too. Also I agree with the minuscule flaws, I'll definitely be careful next time.
-Okay, you took a "meh" song that's a minute and 40 seconds long and stretched it to being over 7 minutes long and GOOD. That's pretty impressive.
-It was a good idea to use such a simple song as your basis, because it let you do some really crazy stuff over the top.
-Your transitions are AWESOME, even if they're a bit long.
-The vocal samples are very well-done and fit the concept well.
-The first 2 minutes create an amazing ambiance, not sure where the vocal samples come from. Unfortunately, it goes on a little bit too long IMO.
-The buildup from 2:00 to 2:58 is a bit overly long. Could have used a bit of a faster build.
-Some mixing problems on the right side at about 4 minutes in.
-The section from about 4:29 to 5:19 doesn't appear to have much of anything to do with the original song. This is a relatively minor issue, but if you're going to be soloing over pretty much the rest of it due to the simple basis, it should probably stay closer to that. same goes for the string instruments from about 5:42-6:09.
-The ending is a tad dull in comparison to the rest, though it does fit.
Overall: Score of 10/10. This was pretty amazing overall in composition, and even with the minor problems of overly long sections and somewhat unrelated sections, there is a ton of substance here. Great work!
Thank you for your review.
I understand the minor problems you enlisted and I agree with the fact that some parts may seem less fitting or too stretched over. However, my goal was to create an unpredictable piece made of more than just one theme and one atmosphere. Surreal, dream-like that feels tense and ever-changing, adapting itself to various scenarios. I jokingly said to one of the judges that my piece has the potential to divide their opinions and I was right, haha. I treat it positively and it's indeed amusing.
That was crazy. I loved it. The atmosphere, the ever changing tone.. wow. 4:27 onward was what really blew me away. I wasn't sure if I wanted to bob my head or build a mechanical horse and hunt zombie cyborgs. This was just madness. Awesome madness. Nicely done.
Thank you very much for your insight. :)
Okay yeah this is a fantastically elaborate version of a fairly forgettable track. There's just so much new content and it's all of great quality. I got a mild headache from listening to the original but you managed to take out the important part of it. The spoken parts are very disturbing and add a whole new layer and backstory to the track.
Thank you very much for your review, I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
Happy Pico Day
